Javanese cities have a hidden wealth of fine colonial buildings, which are rarely mentioned in travel guides. Cirebon has some beautiful pre-colonial shrines, mosques and palaces but the Dutch also added some attractive architecture. One of the finest examples is Cirebon Town Hall, built in the art-deco style and completed in 1939, just before the Japanese Imperial Army arrived and ended European rule of the Indies.
Cirebon means 'prawn waters' in Sundanese and the city is sometimes referred to as 'Prawn City' to this day. It certainly has some tasty local specialities and the humble prawn even finds itself used as a decorative motif in the town hall. In recent years, someone has painted the prawns gold, making them stand out from the otherwise white structure.

Cirebon is a unique experience. We stayed there with a good friend in January 2014 for 3 weeks. The way Indonesians drive over there is nothing short excellence in their own way. A one lane street, you have cars and motor cycle 3 wide, sometimes even more. Whole families on one motorcycle with no helmets. They all have a great respect for each others driving and we never saw any road rage whatsoever. We can learn a lot from these people. A large mix of people from beggars , homeless, slums. lower class, middle class, upper class but what strikes me the most is that they are all happy and very friendly. Would love to go back one day. The Town Hall is in the main street and is a beautiful building.

It is not very common to go, but if you like history, the Cirebon Town Hall became a hiding place in the Republican era/ Colonialism era. It has an oval room too.

This building was built around 1920 , art deco architectural style depicting the bridge of a ship with shrimp contained thereon. Located at Siliwangi St. which is the main street in the city of Cirebon . This building was used as the mayor's office until today . A great spot for photos right in front of the building and taken from across the street
