This cooking class was the absolute highlight of our trip to Bali. We were staying a few doors up from Cafe Wayan and had been in for lunch the day before. I had decided that I wanted to try a cooking class previously and after eating at this amazing restaurant we decided that this was the place. We booked to do cooking class 4 (if you are the first to book you can choose which menu you cook, but they have a range of different ones that you can chose to book onto if you aren't the first person!).
We arrived for the morning class to find that we were only with 2 other people, so there was 4 of us in the class overall. We were shown the garden where all of the herbs were cooked, and then got to cook 5 different balinese dishes and then eat them for our lunch. The guy running the class was amazing and everyone was able to get a go cooking with the wok or grinding up spices. It was really cool to see how the restaurant grew their own vegetables and how they cooked specific things (we did some chicken breast over roasted coconut shell). All of the food we cooked was divine and we got a recipe book to take away with us.
If you are staying in Ubud, please do this class! It is so worth it. If you can't make it to the class, make sure to pop into Cafe Wayan during your trip - it was by far the best meal we had whilst we were there!

Great cooking class. There were only the two of us we learned a lot. The amount of food we cooked could have been enough for 4 people. Delicious food would highly recommend this.

We had eaten at Cafe Wayan twice during our stay at Ubud and decided to try the cooking class. It was a lot of fun and the chef’s were excellent. They had done a lot of prep to ensure that we weren’t waiting around during the cooking class. The food was great, it was a really good way to try a number of dishes. We received a recipe book and will definitely try the dishes at home. It was one of our favourite activities during our trip to Bali.

We cooked mostly ourselves balinese food (4 courses) in a beautiful garden with amazing people and then we could eat what we made in this beautiful garden just for us.

This was such a great cooking class! We searched for ages for one that sounded perfect and this was it! It did not disappoint. The scenery is lovely, the class is done outside and there are 7 menus to choose from. The food is great and the teachers so knowledgable. Highly recommend! A true Balinese cooking experience!

This class is great because it teaches you the authentic preparation techniques that gives Balinese dishes their distinctive flavour. The recipes are simple and easy to adapt back home i.e without access to the beautiful abundant garden of course.

We chose the cooking class here because we love the food at the restaurant and also because the program was about 2 hours (with kids that is plenty :))
The chef and staff were very nice in explaining everything about the dish and ingredients. The place is extremely clean and after every chopping session, the staff made sure chopping boards and our tables were cleaned up.
The food came out great and we got to enjoy it in the back garden where the cooking class took place.
Highly recommend it!

If you’re in Ubud and you like cooking a bit, then you definitely should do a cooking class at Cafe Wayan. They explain well in English what they do and a lot of herbs and species come from their own garden.
By the way, if other foreigners don’t know all the words of species in there own language, they know a lot of translations as well. I guess, they evolved that in providing over 20 years of cooking classes.
We were lucky and could choose the menu a day in advance.
After the class, you will eat the amazing food. So lovely!
If I have to add a point of feedback, there can be done more of cooking yourself. As the cooking class is relatively short (2 hours).

Through our place of stay we learned of the Cafe Wayan cooking class. There was this little card in the folder at the place of stay, I pulled it out and said "wouldn't it be AWESOME to take a cooking class while we're here"?
As into cooking as we are, it was a no brainier. we had the front desk guys set us up for a morning class learning how to make sambal inspired dishes, one of my all time favorite condiments from the spice islands.
The driver arrived in the most timely of fashions and we eagerly set off on what would be a grand adventure, after all, this was my idea.
I could go on forever here, but let me tell you one thing, take this class if you can. At 350,000 IDR (under $25 USD), it will be worth your time.Chef Wayan and his crew had everything laid out and ready for us as we entered the class area. After a tour of the garden and an introduction to the herbs, spices and vegetables we would be literally picking off plants to use, we set about creating our 5 course meal.
When it was all said and done, we enjoyed our goodness in the private setting of the gardens surrounding this awesome place, and, we did so good that the chef and his crew enjoyed our creations as well.
This is no average restaurant, its an experience, weather eating or learning, you will not be dissapointed. Some reviews were below average, I feel for those people as I don't think they truly absorbed all that was to offer, nor did they absorb the beauty that they created within. This is truly a place of a lifetime to visit, eat, or learn.
My sincere thanks go to Chef Wayan and his crew, who taught us the way of Balinese cuisine. I made it at home, and while not as accurate (what i can find as far as ingredients at home), it brought me back to a glorious, high point of my visit to Bali. This class was definitely one of the top two things i did while here.
I HIGHLY recommend taking a class, its two hours of training, a cookbook to keep with your lesson plan, and an in depth understanding to how this wonderful food is created.
I truly can't express my gratitude to the Chef and his crew, I will remember this experience forever.
I will do it again....someday.

My husband, 15 yr old son and I were lucky to book a private cooking class here and it was AMAZING. The class was so well executed, engaging and organised. We started with a delicious welcome drink and chat with the lovely restaurant
staff, then moved on to a tour of their extensive organic garden at the back of the very beautiful restaurant. We managed to prepare, cook and eat 5 courses in a little over 2 hours!!! Cafe wayan serves some of the best and freshest food in ubud and now we know why. It is really worth the money, whether you book a private or join in with a group cooking class as you get to have an absolute FEAST at the end. Please do yourself a favour and make this a priority activity whilst in Ubud (:
