About
Yeh Pulu Temple Build on 14th or 15th century and are in a very attractive rice field setting. You can reach Yeh Pulu on foot through the rice fields from Goa Gajah but you will definitely need a guide for the 45 minute walk as there is no path to speak of. Alternatively turn off the Ubud to Gianyar main road about 400 metres east of the entrance to the Goa Gajah complex. Drive through Banjar Batulumbang until the road comes to an end. For here walk down the track to Yeh Pulu passing the small warung on your left. As well as the carvings there is a holy well here and the attendant priest will be happy to bless you with the well water. Temple dress code applies here. Yeh Pulu is a much under-rated and under-visited site - highly recommended.

Do not go to this place. Worst experience in Bali, aside from 30,000 they make you pay for the guide 150,000 and donation. I'm not a moneybag and I hate to be treated like that. Awful awful awful

When we arrived we paid the usual 15k rupiah to get in. This guide said he'd tag along, and it was up to us whether we had to pay him or not. He told us this long story about all the money going back to the community - by the smell of his breath I don't think that was quite right. Anyhow, he seemed friendly enough and we didn't know how to shake him off considering we were the only ones there. The temple itself was ok, the cool thing was the ancient ruins there. This nice old lady blessed us and of course asked for a donation (no problems it's not much anyway). Afterwards when we were all alone with the guide he asked for money right there and then. He asked us for $150k!!!!! I blatantly said no way. I was ready to give him 20k and move on, my partner gave in and handed him 50k (I wouldn't have). Anyhow, he asked us FOR MORE money! Saying his community would be disappointed and blah blah blah. We really didn't have much on us and so I said no, it was more than enough. Point being, it's hard to shake off the guides because it's not a popular place. The place itself is pretty average, with the "guides" involved I'd give this a total miss.

Maybe we didn't do our research but WS expecting something a little grander after reading recommendations in guidebook. At least the walk was mercifully short. The lady who blessed at the bottom was sweet.

A great example of an early Balinese Fresco ,rarely visited these days . You might be advised to cary some small change in case you are asked for an entrance fee . Bring cold drinks with you .

Having read about Yeh Puluh, and being interested in ancient sites, we set off on the not so easy task to locate independently. We'd chosen the wrong road and almost gave up until spotting a small fluttering sign that led to the site. We have no problems with local people trying to make a living as a guide, and ours was informative and spoke excellent English. The admission price helps maintain the site, which was pristine. The walk is not difficult and the surrounding area is lovely. Unlike many attractions, there is no series of stalls but there is a small warung for refreshment. Imagine discovering 11th century carvings depicting ancient Balinese village life in a rice field. Yeh Puluh carvings were found in the 1920s at a time when the Balinese were more concerned with feeding themselves than history. Fortunately international archaeological recognition has ensured preservation of the site and it is now acknowledged as one of the most significant on the island. The atmosphere is distinctly spiritual and we were very moved to be blessed by the woman mangku. A small donation to the temple was happily made. You are not likely to be overrun by crowds here. So much the better. For those who have been lukewarm about this place, to each their own. For us, it was special.

A very quiet & serene place. It's located a bit of a way from Ubud, but the reliefs are worth the trek. Beware of the "official tour guides" at the ticket office that offer you a "free" tour then try to hit you up for a massive fee afterwards!

The reliefs are interesting, but what's wonderful is the stroll through the rice fields, the temple you have all to yourself, the clanking of the whirley-gig at the entrance.

On the way in a walk along padi fields & greenery. The wall sculpture around 100m built in the 14-15th century is very unique with a short storyline of the lives in those days.

A lovely little stone carving temple discovered in the rice fields dating back maybe to 1450.
Entry fee reasonable (I think around 45,000 IDR) for our family of four.
But the guide then explains he does the tour for free and any donation at the end would be welcome to benefit the kids of the village. He won’t talk money again he says (a white lie as you will discover later).
The guide doesn’t have far to go, and not much to say, but he is a great guy and points out other things like a venomous green mamba snake in a tree, which was great!
The temple itself is a smallish stone carving of village life some 600 years ago, also lovely
But after 20 minutes at the end I give the guide 60,000 IDR as a voluntary donation to say thanks (as longer tours of major temples can be around 100,000 IDR) and he is not happy!? He explains he should be paid 150,000 IDR, what a con! I tell him no that’s not right and he goes on to explain something about being a farmer ? He doesn’t overly persist but does press the matter a little . I politely refused paying extra. It left a taint, if he expects so much more than the big temple guides he should say so upfront and we would say “no thanks” up front. He was with the ticket box attendee and was legitimate, but a scammer nonetheless, be warned, go to other temples instead like Goa Lawah elephant cave which is nearby and give this a miss...

Pro:
1. Interesting site for people who love ancient site
2. Rough n primitive but very artistic stone carving from early age
3. Only around 10mins drive from elephant cave and Only 25m stone wall carving and that's all, nicr to put it if it is on the route
Con:
1. Boring for people who r not interested in art or historic site
2. Not for people who expect very fine and detailed stone carving
Tip:
If you intend to visit here, you may Google whst is the meaning or story behind the carving , because there is no descriptions at all or u dun want to end up some bad local guides here.

Is it an easy walk, how far, any steps?
Written 8 May 2017
You will be provided with a sarong and sash for your visit to the temple or holy place, though it doesn't really look like the temples you may be used to.
It is a very pleasant walk, but I found the guide's chat a little irksome.
