The place was okay as it has everything you need : bars, convenient store, mcd, souvenir shops, clothing shops. The place is pretty much congested all the time.

Kuta Square used to be the centre of Kuta and Matahari used to be the heart and soul of Kuta Square. However, things have changed drastically for the worse. During the Covid years Matahari moved out of kuta Square and since then the place deteriorated enormously. Today, it is only a semblance of what it use to be. The heart of Kuta Square now seems to be the McDonalds restaurant located next to the empty and run down remains of Matahari. There are a couple of minimarts and a few boutiques and a couple of cafes or restaurants. Dulang Kafe is one which has remained and is still very popular.
The condition of the buildings is also pretty dire in some cases with for rent signs visible in many of the empty shops. The road, pavements and kerbing are falling apart due to lack of maintenance. The plants that run through the centre of the road also look neglected.
There is still always small crowds of people visiting Kuta Square to get their burgers, visiting the minimarts, of to visit boutiques or Dulang Kafe, but I feel the majority of people are simply using Kuta Square as a thoroughfare to get from Jl Kartika Plaza to Jl Pantai Kuta where Kuta is thriving much more. Similarly, there is always traffic with lots of cars, taxis and motorbikes passing through Kuta Square with often small jams when they join Jl Pantai Kuta.
It's become quite depressing and has seen some improvement since Covid but in my opinion not much. I wonder if Kuta Square will ever be as it was without the return of Matahari department store.

Sad to see a once vibrant area now largely desolate with empty shops, buildings looking derelict, footpaths with broken and missing paving, weeds and grass growing along the median strip, rubbish and the once bustling Matahari store site now standing abandoned. There are a few new shops and a few restaurants open for business. Happily, our favourite, Dulang, still survives and offers enjoyable meals.

Just about every shop including the once great Matahari is closed up and abandoned. Looks like a dirty rat 🐀 run now and was glad to walk away from it. Hope someone pulls everything down before it falls down.

Visited here for the day, only stayed for a short while as it wasn’t for us. It is a bit scruffy looking although the beach was quite nice. Walking round the side streets you were really mothered to buy stuff.

I needed to find an apple repair centre and thought there might be one in this area. As it was, it was a sales only operation, but was still one of the best shops in this area.
It is hot, intense and you get harassed a lot by traders and taxi drivers. It can get very busy and the roads are quite dangerous so we only ever went there when we needed something.
if shopping is your thing, it may be okay for you, but it’s a visit only when required place for us.

Kuta Square was a busy area pre-pandemic but now most of the shops are vacant, only a few international brands are left, at night it is like an eerie ghost town, no life. There is no point going there, nothing to see, nothing to do, and the few shops left have a standard selection that one can find at other shops as well.

Kuta Square has been severely impacted by Covid - it's a shadow of it's former self.
You would expect it will rebound eventually but it does require a redo - no Matahari as a key tenant doesn't help and at least half the shops are vacant so it will take a while for this part of Bali to bounce back.

Hi, I can't help you, as I don't have a clue what a stussy hoodie is. I'd say they don't, because hoodie are not popular in the Tropics.

Hi guys
I have been to bali once and all the copy stuff we bought was pretty average in quality. sunglasses, t shirts etc, which is what you pay for or expect really. Some people have told me that you can buy different variations in quality, and can get a more expensive but better quality pair of ray bans for example. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go to get better quality gear, not real though, as it is the same price as here.

If you go to Galleria, named brand shops. Still get a bargain.

Hi Bill,
could you please be more specific regarding the location of the better alternative shops?

Semenjak has some nice shopping, maybe a little better quality, proper stores vs little stand type shops. however a little more expensive but there are a few little stand type vendors too. Be prepared to bargin and have a variety of bills. have fun hope this helps. If you get to ubud there is nice hand crafted art up there as well.

Hi, are cocktails at the pool bar reasonably priced. I've heard some hotels have expensive cocktails and some have cheaper ones.

It all depends on the hotel you stay, as a rule they are a lot cheaper than what you would pay in Australia. Most hotels have happy hour as well.
