This is place is terrible, all they care about is the donations from people, they just want money, theres no education centre, theres no information on what they are doing nothing. We queued up about 45 minutes before the time thinking it would open soon and we could go inside to see what work they were doing. But it’s nothing like that. There’s absolutely no organisation there we were just given a ticket and told to come back later, but we stayed to see what was happening and what we seen horrified us. They only had about 100 turtles to release that day but as there was about another 150 people in the queue rather than saying sorry no more a couple of the men went into the big turtle where the eggs are buried and started digging them up out of the sand!! Some of these small turtles were being dug up some still in their shells just so they could get more money off people. It was really horrible to witness.
Please don’t go here go to Turtle Conservation and Education Centre in Serangan, Denpasar there they have a proper education centre and you can see what conservation work they are actually doing.

We came here thinking we were helping turtles. What awaited us was mass processing - hundreds of people in a very small space, who first had to queue up for a so-called token, and then later had to join another crowd to get a baby turtle. The worst thing of all, however, was the 'storage' of the little turtles. They were stored in large numbers in small plastic containers with only a little water. In our opinion, this has nothing to do with animal welfare. We would advise against a trip here.

Amazing once in a life time experience. Staff were super friendly and enthusiastic, the experience was well organised and easy to navigate.
The staff were informative about the conservation and how they help the species on Kuta beach. Emphasised there passion when finding out it was a non profitable organisation encouraging us to be generous when donating to the turtles.
We were so lucky to be able to do this as from what they were saying on some turtle releases they have over 600 people turn up!
If you are in kuta make sure to check out these guys ocial media to see if you have a chance to go! You won’t regret it!

Such an amazing experience!! Make sure to get there early to get a token for a baby turtle. I was there an hour earlier and was one of the first ones. In July and August there are hatches almost every day, but they obviously only know when the next hatch is that same day the turtles hatch. this is why they can only tell you on the same day that there’s gonna be a release. they will post it on their FB and instagram! If you’re in Bali, DO IT!

Had an amazing time!!! There were so many turtle types that we got to feed, and pet and hold and had an amazing time with. There was other animals too such as toucans and luwaks. Approximately 50% of the money goes towards the animals too

Did the baby turtle release last week - was a genuine highlight of our trip.
If you are keen to do it just monitor the Turtle Society facebook page on any given day and if there is a release planned they'll advise that morning - usually happens about 4.30pm but as others have suggested, try and get there earlier.
It is free but please donate - these people are heroes and the money will surely help.

There was a big turtle statue under construction and a room with plastic boxes that I think would be used for turtle breeding and some posters of turtles. Opening hours were unclear, staff did not speak much English. Best to check if open before visiting.

Let me start this review with how cute and exciting it is to plan your day knowing that you could see baby turtles make their way from the sand to the ocean.
But don't be fooled into thinking that you're doing something good for these turtles. what you're actually supporting in these countries is their financial stability off tourist , and nothing towards the turtles.
The attraction toward releasing turtles into ocean comes across that you're " helping " them. When in hein sight you're really not.
Part of the natural instinct of turtles is to return to the beaches they hatched from to lay eggs of their own. How they achieve this is taking the time to be formular with their surroundings of the beach before they embark into the ocean. But instead they are placed in plastic containers for tourists to be misleads that they are supporting the wild life. These baby turtles now have no knowledge or memories to return back, now hindering them to return to this beach to lay their own eggs. Which defeats the purpose of the natural " circle of life " because 90% of them won't return.
Even if these baby turtles do survive into adult hood to potentially have the opportunity to lay their eggs. What tourist are also mislead by is the reason why turtles again need the time to crawl towards the ocean themselves.
Let me emphasize the word " baby " for my next point. No human is excepted to run 5km after being born. Same thing goes with these baby turtles. The primary reason for the turtles laying their eggs away from the coast line, is to allow their off spring to hatch properly , and crawl to the ocean themselves. This allows the baby turtles lugs to fully develop before spending the majority of their life in the ocean. So standing next to the water with a baby turtle in a plastic container does not give them enough time for their lugs to develop fully before entering the ocean. So what realistically is about to happen is hundreds of baby turtles will drown, again , false information on " helping " these baby turtles.
Turtles are not set up to have an easy life, they have many perpetuators. Dogs , birds , larger fish , sharks , and tourist. Making the survival rate extremely low. Typically 1/100 will make it to adult hood.
I'm not saying all organizations are run this way to hinder these baby turtles. But what I'm trying to bring is the awareness of doing proper research on the cause you'd like to support. Or taking the time to volunteer to protect these animals compared to a quick satisfaction to feel good about yourself.
There are many great volunteers projects who take pride in supporting the natural instincts of the baby turtles. So go put in the physical work to clean up the beaches of garbage , and let nature take its course , and leave well enough alone.

A must thing to do. The baby turtle release is a wonderful conservation programme and is on most days around 4.30pm on Kuta Beach. Get there early to hear about the programme and grab a free ticket, or give a small donation to help save these beautiful creatures.

These poor turtles stuck in a giant sand pit, the majority of the ones we saw were not moving, even when other turtles climbed over them

Do you accept volunteers from other countries? If not, are you familiar with an reputable organization where my two teenage daughters could volunteer to help sea turtle rescue initiatives for a couple weeks?

Hi Grace, sorry I am a bit late. Hope you visited the turtles conservation and adopted turtle babies. The place is open on all days from 9am to 6pm. Riley turtle population has been declining rapidly due to locals grabbing the eggs and eating turtle meat. Though this conservation is doing a great job, turtle poachers are not punished enough to prevent their actions. If caught red-handed also, the penalty is a slap on the wrist. The Government should do much more to stop people killing the adults and the eggs. But it costs a lot to do this. Our help is very little, it gave us a great feeling to adopt for a small donation. They are not able to tag them any more as it is very expensive.
