Great place to hit your caffeine quota

A great place to experience. The guide is friendly and explains how balinese coffee is made and also the luwak coffee. She then let us try 13 types of coffee and tea. Luwak coffee would be extra 50k rupiah but it was a great experience drinking it.
My favourite were the ginseng coffee and mangosteen tea.
High recommend!

Best plantation in Ubud, and I've been to a few. The free tasting was absolutely incredible and the free guides were so friendly and knowledgeable. It's also great to be confident that the place is owned by local Balanese farmers, and the Luwak coffee is actually produced in a sustainable and ethical way. I wouldn't go anywhere else for your tastings!

Definitely worth doing

Our tour guide was lovely and educational, and the samples of all the teas and coffees were delicious - and this part (samples and tour) was all free! If you decide to buy some of the coffees or teas, they are not so cheap.

Delicious Coffee & Tea Tasting Session

Bali has been promoting its coffee plantations as one of its newest tourist attractions & most of these coffee plantations are located in Temen Village, the home for organic coffee.

However, our tour guide brought us to Cantik Agriculture Luwak Coffee which was located in Gianyar. A local lady guide from the establishment greeted us warmly. She asked us where we were from & we answered “Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.” Upon doing so, she changed her Balinese accent & adopted to one which was similar to Malaysian. She further explained that she had received many Malaysian tourists in the past & had learnt our local twang. Then, we walked through a narrow path & was shown a lone civet, sleeping in its cage & thereafter, a pair, sleeping as well. She explained that the civets are nocturnal creatures & they can’t really see in the day. It is known that civets are the producers of the world’s most expensive coffee named “Luwak Coffee.”

The civets are known to eat only the best coffee beans which will pass through their digestive system. The beans will be defecated, collected, washed, sun-dried & roasted. That is how Luwak Coffee is being made.

There are only 3 species of coffee planted in the plantation, Arabica, Robusta & Bali. The Arabica coffee leaves are smaller than Robusta’s. We were also shown cocoa & ginseng trees. Not long after, we came to a hut & saw coffee beans in their respective stage, from the defecated stage til the roasted stage. We also saw a woman roasting & grinding the coffee beans. We were invited to taste some cocoa & had found them sweet.

Next, the lady guide ushered us to an open-air sitting area. She had told us to choose a table while she prepares the 15 types of complimentary coffee & tea for us. We had the plantation view ahead of us. It was very peaceful & serene. On our table was a laminated placemat with descriptions & benefits of the various coffee & tea produced in the plantation. Not long after, our lady guide appeared with 15 small cups of coffee & tea which were laid on top of each description window. All of them tasted delicious as most were mixed with sugar. The Luwak Coffee was not part of the complimentary tray. Hence, my partner had requested for a cup at IDR50,000. The Luwak Coffee was strong in flavour, taste & smell in comparison to the others.

Next, we were invited to shop at their gift store for souvenirs. The coffee & tea powder were sold in various weight. The cheapest was sold at IDR60,000 enough for 3 cups which was pretty expensive! They come either with sugar or without sugar for the health conscious.

Since my partner & I enjoyed most of the coffee & tea, we ended buying quite a bit. I had also bought some body scrub & bath soaps as souvenirs.

This is one tour that I strongly urge not to miss. It’s an opportunity to taste all 15 types of coffee & tea which are beneficial to the body.

We called in here as part of a day out and it was amazing. I'm so glad we did visit it. We walked down the pathway through the various plants/jungle. Saw a couple of civets. Then came to an area where women were heating and grinding various coffee beans. Then shown to a table with amazing views over the plantation. On the table were lots of cups of different teas and coffees for us to taste. You really must try the Kopi Luwak even if the thought turns your stomach. It's actually rather nice. Then you can go and have a wonder round the shop on site. We got a bit carried away here and spent more than we intended but now we are home I'm so glad we did as we both love the teas.

Packaging and exorbitant pricing

Nice way of doing business. They know how to inform guests/buyers about their products from the tree to the package. The guide knows his onion too well. Very informative. Very pleasant and cordial. But once you are presented or given the teas and coffees to sample, that's the point of the dilemma. But one thing for sure is that you are not forced to. But the fact they've spent their time and stuffs in your table, it's but natural or ethical to reciprocate. You can buy a little, if you want, just to compensate. But my friend thought of gifting it for the coming holidays. She spent hundred of dollars. A quarter kilo of the coffee and chocolate she bought for me cost 230,00 rupiah. That's around 17 USD. And it is not even pure. That has powdered sugar. Same thing with the lemongrass tea....kinda sweet already. Yup, the stuffs they sell, you have to think twice first. But, overall, the experience was all worth it. The staff were very courteous. Must be a way to compensate for the overall expenses of the farm--and not to judge them outright.

Traditional coffee & tea producers where you can tst the local flavours. Some you like, others you don't, but if you don't try it you will never know!
In the end you can buy, as souvenir or not the ones you enjoyed...

Enjoyable visit

Visited here as part of a day tour. Enjoyed it very much. Charming host and a very enjoyable set of teas and coffees to taste. Didnt feel rushed or pushed into buying anything. We did buy some teas but have not tried them yet so can not comment on the quality

Great experience, worth it

Was abit unsure as I am not a coffee drinker. However my husband is a keen coffee drinker. Was a great experience. Our tour guide was brilliant and very knowledgeable. She explained the whole process from start to finish. Also opporrunity to help out by grounding and siving the coffee which was pretty cool. Coffee tasting was amazing. 8 different coffee and 7 different teas. Tour guide sat with us and explained the process behind all 15. Also get the opportunity to try their specialist coffee, the cat-poo-chino. Gift shop reasonably priced. The coffee plantation experience as a whole is free though.

Interesting but pushy sales techniques

Sunday 8th September and we visited here, it was one of the stops on our "Bali Great Introduction Tour" which we booked through the Tui Representative at our Hotel.

On arrival we were greeted and then whisked through a small garden area where we shown the 2 varieties of coffee beans growing. We were then quickly ushered through a few working demonstrations of the process.

Then we arrived at the main reason for the tour the tasting area, which overlooks the jungle, where we were given 14 varieties of teas and coffees to taste. The tea were made from many fruits and spices as tea is not produced in Bali.

Kopi Lewak is made here and we were informed it is the most expensive coffee in the world. A civet eats and digests the coffee beans, it is then excreted out on to the ground, from where it is collected, washed and the processed into coffee. This was not included in the free tasting, it had to be paid for.

Once the tasting was over it was like fast tracking to the shop where visitors where encouraged to make purchases. We did purchase small packets of Rosella, Tumeric and a Lemongrass teas, thought they were the nicest we tasted, but a bit pricey. A couple of times the sales assistant asked if we would prefer to purchased larger bags of tea

During the tour we were told that some cows are also kept here and their manure is used to fertilise the land, we were informed that everything was natural and organic. We did also see some covets in cages.
