I had gone to Sundarbans with 3 of my friends. I must say it was total waste of time. We could not see any animals, with the exception of one or 2 birds. The boats constantly revolve around the same waters constantly taking turns and all you can see is just mangroves and your eyes are constantly striving to watch a deer or one of the unique animals or birds that are sited from time to time. A very boring place with nothing exciting to offer. We were taken to a zoo where we could see a tiger and an crocodile. But I must say that the food offered in the boats was excellent especially for non veg foodies, you get the taste of authentic bengali food.

An independent trip to the Bangladeshi Sundarbarns isnt tourist friendly and will be a test of ur skills and patience. The UNESCO World Heritage site is extremely fragile lacking tourist infrastructure & left to former fishermen with little experience.
Organising a boat into the Sundabahns from the village of Khulna lead to a boat trip to the Karamjal Wildlife Center, a deer/crocadile park on the edge of the Sundabans. It seems the majority of locals who venture into the Sundarbarns are taken here. For a real boat trip into the water jungle you need to apply for a pass at the Divisional Forest Office in Khulna & hire armed guards as a caution against man-eating wildlife. Camping in the Sundarbarns is risky since the tigers are the top-dogs, crocodiles are pretty deadly too. A joint tiger-crocodile attack would make front page news. Insist on carrying enough fuel for the duration of your cruise, if not, you will end up back on dry land within a few hours, barely entering the Sundarbarns. Many boat guys will negotiate for a huge fee so be shrewd & compromise. It might be a good idea to hire a guide to show you things rather than cruising around blindly.
A trip into the Sundarbarns will most likely end up in extreme frustration at just trying to organise it. A typical trip would be like a Sunday drive, cruising down the river watching the riverbanks hoping for a glimpse of the famous Royal Bengal Tiger however the chances of actually seeing one in the wild are pretty slim considering they're critically endangered in Bangladesh and more likely to be seen by a poacher through his rifle scope. BANG!
In any case, deer park or water jungle, cruising down the river is a pretty good way to spend a few days in Bangladesh, probably the best days you will spend & a zillion times better than staying anywhere in Dhaka, Old Dhaka or New Dhaka, the air pollution, water pollution & human sprawl just make life in Bangladesh a sad sad tale. Live on.

In the interest of balance we should start by saying that the majority of people on the tour seemed to be very happy customers, it was however not what we were expecting. It felt more like a cruise and geared towards tourists who like to spend their money on creature comforts and personal service rather than cultural and environmental experience. We probably spent about 3 hours in total over the 3 days actually off the main boat, the rest of the time we were expected to be eating or sleeping. For the 'jungle walks' people were dressed more like they were attending a wedding, which funnily enough was not a problem since almost everywhere you are taken is paved. Despite being as far into the Sunderbans as you can go, it couldn't feel any less authentic. For this reason it is probably better to do a short tour from Mongla and stick to the closer canals. Jungle adventure it is not, backpacker tour it is not. We may as well have gone for a pleasure cruise down the Danube. If you have chosen to holiday in Bangladesh and are from further afield than the subcontinent, chances are you are looking for adventure. You will not find here. If you want 3 days of rest and relaxation, have your hand held and be constantly waited on then this is the tour for you. I should say that this review is almost definitely not specific to this tour company, the boats follow each other around and have essentially the same itinerary, although we only have personal experience of Bengal tours.

My extended family and I rode on the boat M.V. Chhuti from Naranganj to the Sundarbans Wildlife Sanctuary. The views along the way were beautiful. It took at least a day to get down to the Sundarbans, but the boat ride itself was lots of fun, with lots of photo ops, too. We passed by hundreds of fisherman and people working on their land in the villages by the river. The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful. Even had a few glimpses of river dolphins. Once in the Sundarbans, we took an early morning tour on a small rowboat to look for animals along the small rivulets that run through the mangrove forest. We saw a monitor lizard, kingfisher, monkeys, mudskippers. Another evening we went off the boat and into the wildlife sanctuary and trekked though hoping to see Tigers. We didn't see any tigers, but we did see boar and a large herd of deer, as well as several types of birds. Another afternoon we trekked through to a beach on the Bay of Bengal. My family and I had this spot of beach completely to ourselves, so we splashed around in the water. The beach itself was pretty cool, some of the sand was black and shiny from minerals, and there were lots of little designs made by the tiny sand bubbler crab.
When we weren't out on sight-seeing trips, the time on the boat was also well spent. The upper deck of the boat had lots of seating to look out at the water, and was covered so there was plenty of shade. Meals were served up here. The food provided by the crew was tasty and plentiful and we never went hungry.
All in all it was a great trip. Make sure to bring a camera. Have warmer clothes for when the sun is down and it can get damp on the boat in the mornings. Wear comfortable shoes for long walks. Have protection from the sun. Pillows, blankets, and mosquito netting are provided in the sleeping cabins, which have small bunk beds, 2 or 3 in each cabin. There are shower and toilet stalls, I think you'll need to pack your own soaps and shampoos. The crew and guide were great. This was a very relaxing boat ride and trip and is a great change from the hustle and bustle of Dhaka. I highly recommend it!

Prior to arriving inn Bangladesh I was unsure of which Tour group to use to visit the Sundarbans to see the largest mangrove forest in the world and hopefully a glimpse of a Royal Bengal Tiger [again the worlds largest wild tiger population which live in the forest].
Fortunately I visited Guidetours in Gulshan in Dhaka and received wonderful service from Johnny who took care of all necessary train, Rocket and Bonbibi tickets. In addition Johnny gave me a personalised tour of old Dhaka where his knowledge and experience was superb.
The Bonbibi crew were all caring but none more so than our guide Emu who arranged my early transfer to the motor launch in Khulna. The Bonbibi is 10 years old but is in excellent condition [not a description you readily associate with this beautiful but tragically poor country] as it has a fresh coat of paint all over.
When all passengers boarded we headed south into the forest after picking up the mandatory armed rangers, eventually arriving at Kuakarta on the Bay of Bengal. Numerous safaris into the mangroves exposed us to a plethora of birdlife, plus spotted deer, wild boar, crocodile and various shell fish.
This is a wonderful serene experience being a complete contrast to manic Dhaka.
My only complaint is that the superb food, both in quality and selection, produced by the Bonbibi chefs spoilt me for the remainder of my trip

The Sunderbans are a world in themselves - and different from anything I had imagined. The mangroves cast a spell on you, as your boat glides through the canal/s ...! Do not go expecting a sight - or even glimpse - of the Tiger, though! We did not see one throughout the trip, but that was fine ... the sighting of various birds, especially Kingfishers made up for it, and also sighting the Water Monitor and a Dolphin! It is the ambience that is amazing - and quite unlike anything I at least had seen ... worth at least one visit!

Just returned from a trip to the Sundarbans in Bangladesh. Wow! Amazingly beautiful, prisitine wildnerness. What a contrast to the frenetic megacity of Dhaka. We travelled there on a Guidetours boat. It was a truly great trip. The staff on the boat were really lovely, amazing food and made us feel really well looked after.
We slept under the stars every night and fell asleep watching the stars and listening to the sounds of the wilderness. We saw some lovely wildlife and spotted tiger tracks but (luckily) did not come face to face with the Royal Bengal! Lovely to be able to take a dip in the Bay of Bengal too and enjoy a Sundarban mud facial. Highly recommend to anyone.

If you are visiting Bangladesh, a visit to the Sundarban mangrove forest is a must. It is so much more than an escape from the city life - it is a dream in green. This is not only the world's largest single block of mangrove, but also the one with the highest biodiversity. So besides looking out for the famous tigers, also keep an eye open for the magnificant birds, reptiles and river dolphins.
There are several tour operators offering packages to the Sundarban forest. However, having a knowledgable and passionate guide makes all the difference. We traveled with The Guide Tours Ltd. and had a wonderful time with a very friendly and helpful ship crew, excellent food and truly dedicated guides. The Guide Tours Ltd. not only talkes about conservation, they are actively involved in supporting ongoing research and conservation related activities. We recommend a trip to the Magical mangroves with The Guide Tours Ltd. - its an experiance you will not want to miss!

We took a 3 day tour of the Sunderbans, starting in Mongla and traveling to Kotka, aboard the MV Gung Chil. The boat itself was functional and the staff were great, especially the cook (the food was great) and the guide (we saw many animals). However, it was not the cleanest boat I have ever been on, even by Bangladeshi standards. If you're not squeamish, I would highly recommend this boat and crew.
During our trip, we were able to see a large amount of wildlife, including many types of birds (kingfishers, woodpeckers, eagles, adjutants), deer, boar, monitor lizards, crocodiles and monkeys. Although, we did not see a tiger, we were able to see the footprint, and on a tour of one of the islands, near tiger point, could hear one in the forest nearby, although, as dusk was quickly approaching, we were not able to venture far into the bush to try and catch a glimpse.
We took a number of expeditions on a small boat, going up the rivers and inlets, amongst the mangroves, and also took two walking expeditions, through Sunderbans East wildlife sanctuary and also to Jamtola Beach (where we heard the tiger).
On top of seeing so many animals and the beautiful scenery, the experience was very peaceful. With very little human habitation and not many other boats around, it really was a novel experience. I would highly recommend visiting if possible.

I did a tour of three days and three nights aboard the boat ML Balawi with Pugmark tours, and it was one of the most wonderful things I have done in any country.
We started out from Khulna early on the Friday morning, returning late Sunday afternoon, and spent the time in between travelling through and exploring this enormous and spectacular mangrove forest – a UNESCO world heritage site. ML Balawi was clean, comfortable, well-designed and well-run. As one of the smaller boats it was never crowded and was able to go down some of the smaller side channels to see more animals and birds.
The tour was very well organised and the expert guides were great at spotting wildlife and telling the stories of the Sundarbans. The food on board was amazing and kept us all well fed from morning til night, with everything from dal to fried fish to samosa to toast with Sundarbans honey. The company owner even helped me get train tickets back to Dhaka when I was unable to get them myself.
The mangrove forest and its inhabitants was the real star of the show though. We saw everything from otters to wild boar and monitor lizards to four types of kingfisher and the Ganges dolphin, while exploring on the main boat, on small rowing boats and by foot. I recommend the Sundarbans and this company to anyone who has half a mind to go.

My girlfriend and I are debating whether or not to take a trip to see the Sundarbans in Bangladesh. From what I have read it seems as though flying into Dhaka and taking a bus to Khulna is the most common itinerary, however, from reading the US travel warning it doesn't seem like Dhaka is very safe right now. Is it possible to fly into Jessore and bus or train to Khulna instead? Is Jessore less or more safe than Dhaka? It would be a shorter drive from Jessore to Khulna anyways right?

I felt quite safe everywhere in Dhaka. So do not worry and enjoy seeing the country.
I would recommend taking the train from Dhaka to Khulna. Even is the distance small you will need quite a time because the traffic is heavy so the busses are slow.
You should definitely go to the Sunderbans.

Would it be safe to travel here in October 2017?
Written 25 September 2017
Hey! Yes, it is definitely safe. I never faced any problems during my 3 weeks travelling alone in Bangladesh. Just respect their culture and behave appropriately. Bangladesh is a wonderful country! I was amazed by its natural beauty (Sundarbans) and its incredibly friendly, warm-hearted and hospitable people. The people in Bangladesh are simply amazing!

Try contacting West Bengal Tourism office at Dalhousie. The all on board can cost Rs 4300+tax PP for 1N/2D cruise on steamer which is worth rather than staying on lodge and hiring boats for different island visit.
