No doubt the place is beautiful, dense and absolutely serene. But the standard of private operators authorized to take people in Safari is absolutely below average. We entered the forest, and everything was fine until an elephant came in front of us, who’s infamous for killing few other elephants (As was told to us later). Our Jeep was 4th in the lane. To our utter surprise, our driver said “Arre Ye Kaha Se Aa Gaya” and panicked. He asked the driver behind him to reverse the jeep as elephant was coming closer. The driver of the jeep behind was adamant to move. Our driver reversed the jeep and dashed into the one behind us. Another driver came to our driver and asked for the sound gun and commented “Tumse Ek Tusker Nahi Sambhlta” Our jeep was turned back and other jeeps also reversed. And in doing so a lot of dashing happened. Then all waited until the elephant is gone. We were shocked and surprised the way the whole situation was handled, unprofessionally, risking the lives of so many people. My wife scolded me for rest of the tour duration, which was done under the fear by my elder son (He was really scared). What was lacking 1. No briefing and orientation to people, before the trip for facing such situation. 2. No co-ordination / standard protocol between drivers. Total chaos, egoistic behavior of drivers. 3. No communication devices such as wireless so that they can speak with forest officials. 4. So many jeeps were allowed inside at once. While reversing chaos happened. 5. Also overtaking each other. So, there’s no sequence maintained in case coordination’s required. 6. These operators were more interested in up-selling rental binoculars and DSLRs Forest Department must look into it and raise the standard of tour operators.…

Rajaji Tiger Reserve has many ranges. I have ben to it through Chilla range which is a famous range of this reserve. We stayed near the gate and booked a vehicle previous evening for an early morning safari, as it is said that if you go early then you may spot animals, once the number of vehicles increased the animals go away dip into the jungle. But we were in second number vehicle, but still not able to see any big animals. We saw some peacocks, deer and a herd of elephants far away. In the middle of the safari driver stops at a house for tea and to use restroom. So if you are lucky then you may see some other animals otherwise enjoy the safari inside the jungle.…

We had a 2,5 hour trip with a guide who was patient and knowledgable. We went on a Sunday during the Christmas break, which meant there were many jeeps. Not all visitor like peace a quiet but prefer to race through the park chatting and shouting. So pick a day when it will be quiet. We saw several deer, boars and birds. Only at the end we saw a small herd of elephants with a one-month old baby, which made the trip really worthwhile. There is a public bathroom that charges 5 rupees, but is so dirty you'll like prefer to skip it.…
