Had some time to kill on our last day on varanasi so thought we'd drop in. We were very surprised with how good this museum was, with lots of things telling us about the history of varanasi. To be fair, the observatory itself was amazing, but only a small part of the whole experience. The sound and light show, in particular, was amazing despite being only in hindi. Would thoroughly recommend.

Situated on the rooftop level of the 300 yrs old Man Mahala (palace) in Varanasi, Manmandir ghat. it is locally known as the Jantar Mantar observatory built-in 1737 by the Maharaja of Jaipur, Jai Singh. The facility was created to help improve the Indian calendar and map-making.
The entrance to the terrace is closed due to covid, but the view is breathtaking. A walk around the terrace will introduce you to the different measuring structures. These include the Samrat Yantra, Laghu Samrat Yantra, Dakshinobiti Yantra, Chakra Yantra, Digansa Yantra, Narivalaya Dakshin, and Uttar Gola. Even if the observatory was built centuries ago, it is said that it can still be used with great accuracy up to this day that can even match modern astronomical instruments.
Due to other popular attraction in Varanasi, most tourists do not visit this historical landmark, Unlike its Delhi and Jaipur counterpart

Jantar Mantar located on the Ghats of the River Ganges (near Dasashwamedha Ghat) is a popular tourist attraction of Varanasi. We visited this observatory after our darshan of Lord Kasi Vishwanath ji, when we came to this ghat.
Jantar Mantar in Varanasi is one of the most renowned and beautifully sculpted observatories of India. Maharaja of Jaipur, Jai Singh constructed this wondrous piece of architecture in 1737 AD. Jantar Mantar present in Varanasi is said to be a replica and inspired by Jantar Mantar present in New Delhi, Ujjain, Mathura and Jaipur.
We were told that Jantar Mantar in Varanasi accurately records the declination of the Sun, Planets and Stars, the altitude, the eclipses throughout the year. Even today its calculations are almost in alignment with the modern technological instruments.

it is located on the dashawmedh ghat.
timings sunrise-sunset
tickets-yes Rs5 indians, 50or100 for foreigners.
photography-allowed, no extra charge
i went on makar sankranti- so there were a huge kites flying around the sky.
its is the highest point there so you can see magnificent ganges and the multicolored boats from over there.
the architecture there is difficult to understand as there are no guides. you are all by yourself
please see the photos(see one of kites) and imagine thousands of them in clear sky)

It will surprise you that their is a Jantar Mantar in Varansi. But it is true that on the roof of Man Mandir palace you will see it.It is interesting and nice but not so popular in Varanasi. In first floor you can know about Varanasi through pictures and videos represented by Archaeological department.

The Jantar Mantar here lies on the roof of the Man Mandir Palace, which lies on the Man Mandir Ghat - a 5 minute walk from the Dasashwamedh ghat towards Manikarnika Ghat.
For Indians, the entry fee to the palace was INR5, no separate charge for camera or for the observatory. Its at a much smaller scale than the ones in Jaipur and Delhi, but still should be of interest to people who like astronomy. Even if you are not, you can get splendid views of the river and the ghats from the top.

You could easily walk past this nondescript site. However, once inside it is pretty amazing to see the world's largest sundial and other instruments built in the 1700's. The accuracy to which the sundials keep time is incredible. I really enjoyed reading about each of the works as there are multi language placards at each piece. It is a world heritage site deservedly.

Jantar Mantar, Varanasi is a fascinating historic site in the midst of the riverfront ghats. It is located next to the Dashaswamedh Ghat, the main ghat of the city. It opens at 6 am - I arrived at 7 am and was the only visitor in the entire place at that early hour. The site is housed in the 400 year old Man Mandir Palace and the astronomical instruments are on the terrace roof. Before viewing the instruments, there are three rooms on the ground floor of the palace created by the Archaeological Survey of India - all have easy-to-read and highly informative interpretive panels on the history of the Ganga, Varanasi, and the astronomical instruments - lots of photos, diagrams, and maps. A video on the Ganga was playing in the main room. You can easily spend an hour or two reading the panels and watching the video. The astronomical observatory is on the terrace with panoramic views of the river. Unlike at Jaipur's Jantar Mantar, you can climb up the stairway of the large sundial for a fantastic view of the city. The site is clean, well maintained, and has washrooms. If you need a peaceful break from the frenetic activity of the ghats and you want a glimpse of Varanasi 400 years ago, visit this site.

The Jantar Mantar of Varanasi, one of the five in the country, is a gem hidden in plain view. It's called the Man Mandir observatory and is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. It's quaint place and the 'Yantra's are just amazing, such as the sun dial. Apart from the amalgamation of history and science, the place also offers an amazing view of the ghats. The entry ticket costs Rs. 15 per person.

worth spending few hours reading the entire description of all yantras for calculation of time, planetary positions etc.. The view of Ganges from windows of the observatory adds music to the tour except that it is occupied by young (school, college) couples in intimate positions . IGNORE them and continue the tour on to the first floor where yantras are installed . If one is interested one can measure the time by suns shadows falling on one yantra and can calculate the angle of inclination with the shadow falling on the other type of yantra etc...But here too ignore all the intimate couples in ' Cozy' corners . DON'T miss the Kiosk explaining (scientific) the purity of 'Ganga maa' inspite of all so called 'dirt' thrown to her.It might help a wavery mind regarding the purity and help to throw light on the fact that she is indeed described as ' papanashini'
