My wife and I went to the Durga (Monkey) Temple whilst visiting Varanasi during a tour of northern India. The 19th century temple gets its name from the aggressive macaque monkeys that apparently swarm around it in the afternoon. We went in the morning and only saw two of them – the rest were apparently out foraging in the local... More

Dirty smelly and hardly any monekys there. Do not get drawn into going into the temple as you will be fleeced for money. The only time i felt truly ripped off during my India trip.

Durga temple is also on must see temple for the people who are visiting Varanasi. It is bit far away from ghats, but can be combined with Sankat Mochan darshan. the temple is beautiful and Maa shakti is very Attractive. You like to keep looking at her. There is peace in Temple

This temple is dedicated to Maa Durga.Adjustant to the temple is a Kund (Pond), which was earlier connected to the Ganges. Hence the name goes as Durga Kund. It is said that this... More

Wonderful temple that gives you an idea of Hindu practices. Very nice compound that includes several temples and a courtyard where monks chant sutras. It's best if you go with a guide who can explain. Watch out for monkey thieves!

My partner and I went by ourselves with little understanding of the Hindu culture/religion and yes it was fascinating but we had not clue what was going on. We recommend finding some sort of guide. Not sure where or who. We felt intrusive and awkward as it's such holy place and the people are often deep in prayer. You have... More
