My partner and I went by ourselves with little understanding of the Hindu culture/religion and yes it was fascinating but we had not clue what was going on. We recommend finding some sort of guide. Not sure where or who. We felt intrusive and awkward as it's such holy place and the people are often deep in prayer. You have... More

The temple is unique as it is made of red stone and neatly built. The presiding deity is the Goddess Durga who is worshipped by everybody. The temple is also known as Monkey temple, because of the presence of many monkeys in the temple. The statue of Durga is Swayambu. It is not made by human beings but legend says... More

You could think, it's one of those temples, hence important to go with a guide to understand history/background and meaning. We went with Groovy Tours (Rajan), highly informative. Attention: you are not allowed to touch the monkeys!

I was a little flabbergasted when entering the temple as it is quite unique. The temple is a very devout place and it was interesting to watch how prayerful young and old are. I felt privileged if not intrusive by observing them. No cameras are allowed and expected at a temple you have to remove your shoes so if you... More

I did not find this place all that divine as being projected by locals. Dirt all around. Plenty of beggars add to this pain.

This is not called monkey temple because of an abundance of monkeys, part of it celebrates the monkey God . It's ok but crowded and smokey from all the incense burning inside.

Known for its bright red colour and the playful but often aggressive monkeys that rum amok here - one of the most imposing architectural monuments in Varanasi
