On our trip to Agra, India to see the Taj Mahal, we stopped at J.K. Cottage Industries and were shown the process of crafting beautiful pieces of art with marble. In the picture I've included you can see the items we bought. They are lovely, well worth the money, and they look terrific in our home. This is a wonderful way to fondly remember the great trip we took to this beautiful country. HIGHLY recommend J.K. Cottage Industries!

We paid a fortune for a marble table.transportation cost a fortune as well
They told us it will be a family heirloom.
only 5 years later, the table cracked as we were sitting and having breakfast .
We had a marble guy look at it, he told us that the table was poorly designed. The table arrived with stains on it. We had an acrylic protective sheet on it since day one,
I sent pictures of my broken table top to these guys. To this day, no one gas the courtesy to respond , these guys do nit stand by their work. This is terrible quality workmanship

Hi, Thank you for the message respectable guest the marble is fragile in nature & every one knows that marble is fragile & it can break & it was clearly mentioned to you at the time of purchase that any negligence or mishandling of marble table top can cause damage & the table top is broken due to misuse or mishandling. You are using the table top from last 7 years not from 5 years without any problems. Breakage due to negligence is not our fault & it is nothing to do with the quality of workmanship, We have not receive any information or photos from your side. Regards Manager JK

Our tour group visited J. K. Cottage Industries after visiting the Taj Mahal. Like most of the other reviewers, our tour guide recommended the visit. We started with a demonstration and talk about how the inlaid process works, the level of experience of the workers, and the variety of pieces available for sale or special order. This took place outside the actual retail location.

After our group of about 14 people entered the store, we were offered a beverage and a place to sit, if we wanted to see some of the table top pieces up close. Some of our group simply walked around the store to look. My husband and I were among a few people who wanted to see some of the small tabletop pieces stacked in rows on the floor. Once we and others saw colors and styles we liked, prices were discussed as were options to see even more pieces, this time specific to the styles we liked. The sales people were very professional, patient, and eager to assist. We didn't feel pressured to make a purchase, at first. They let us know that shipping would be free to the United States, explaining that the India government wants to promote the wares and craftsmanship of India. They also said we could have the back of the piece personalized with our names, Agra, 2019, etc.

After looking at two or three of the small table top pieces (approximately 12" in diameter), we chose one and started negotiating the price. Prices are based on the type and number of stones in the piece, the intricacy of the design, and the size of the inlaid pieces, among other things. The piece we chose included turquoise, Mother of Pearl, and lapis. My husband conferred with our guide and did the negotiating, while I expressed my eagerness to take one home. We didn't come to an agreement right away, and started to leave because most of our tour group had already loaded the bus and we thought what we offered was fair. I had seen similar pieces elsewhere and felt like J. K. Cottage prices were on the high side for the larger pieces, probably because of the incentives they give guides, taxi drivers, etc. to bring tourists to their location. One of the salespeople asked what it would take to make a deal, and my husband gave a number approximately 60% less than the starting price. They agreed to the sale, which I paid for with a credit card. The offer to ship the piece wasn't as forthcoming as when we originally arrived in the store, and they said they didn't have anyone available to personalize the piece. So, I felt better taking it with us rather than pressing for the shipping option, although I felt by using a credit card we would have had a paper trail if we chose the shipping option, in case something didn't go as planned. They thoroughly wrapped the piece with a combination of cardboard, bubble wrap, and string. It took up a lot of space in my husband's suitcase, but made it home in perfect condition!

I would recommend J. K. Cottage because of the wide assortment of items and the free shipping option, if you've done some homework and are comfortable with negotiating a lower price. Our piece is displayed on a wooden stand, the type you would use to display a decorative plate, which came with the piece at no additional cost. We are happy with the purchase.

We visited JK Cottage Industries after our visit to the Taj Mahal.
The inlaid intricate stone carvings on the Taj Mahal was breathtaking and our guide said he will take us to a place that still employs the same clan of artisans that worked on the Taj Mahal and they still visit the monument for maintenance work.

JK Cottage Industries is a small place with artisans sitting outside working on various items and we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Imran who explained the various processes, the type of work involved and how this is done.
The children were fascinated!

We then went to the gift shop and loved EVERYTHING there! There were vases, ashtrays, wall decorations and gasp! Chessboards!
Exquisitely inlaid chessboards with hand carved chess pieces. Boards so delicate, that light shone through them!

Imran patiently showed us various designs and after much looking around, we decided to commission our own! Size, inlay design, inlay colors, size of the chess pieces AND a display table - all chosen by us!

Free shipping and insurance included.

We paid and came back home and within a few weeks, Imran started corresponding on WhatsApp updating us of the development on a regular basis. We could see our custom table come alive!

Finally it was completed and FedEx-ed to our home - carefully packed!!

Some pictures of the place and the fantastic item we ordered!

They do a good job explaining and demonstrating to you the engraving process, all done by hand over weeks and months. It puts the craftsmanship of the Taj Mahal in perspective. According to our guide, there are about 300 families in Agra who still practice this craft and pass down the next generation. The intricate designs are not my style but I still ended up buying something, and was swayed by the free shipping pitch :-)

The guide took me to J.K Cottage Industries after visiting Agra Fort, I knew about family traditions of passing an skills from generations. I was surprised to see and understand that the techniques for this work has been preserved thought the pass of time. Therefore, each piece is unique, representing the knowledge carried through generations of artisans.
Also, the owner shipped the table and arrived home within two weeks from the email communication, I was able to track the shipment and custom clearance. It was more challenging to deal with the local DHL office to get the two boxes delivered at home.
I bought an amazing and beautiful table.

Very lucky to chance across this place - a small but expert establishment with a wonderful, friendly, helpful staff including the manager Atif Khan. We were delighted with the craftsmanship of the pieces, and the professional, friendly nature of the way we were handled. Beautifully packaged up and a perfect reminder of our time in Agra. Many thanks!

I paid for 2 tea light holders but discovered too late that they’d made a mistake packing my merchandise with a lower value item. It was pretty busy when I went so very likely it is an oversight. Still, would be nice if they can do a price adjustment.

We bought a large table from JK in 2010 and returned 8 years on for some other inlaid furniture. Atif was as professional as ever and helped us to create another personalised table with our own choice of inlay and colours. Its not cheap, but you will get the most incredible craftsmanship that would cost double or triple in London, assuming you could find the same, which for sure you cant! He supplies many of the other shops and you have to believe in your heart that its a fair deal and that it will arrive at your home a few months later. From our experience we couldn't fault them!
