About
Wildlife SOS Agra Bear Rescue Facility is home to around 100 sloth bears that were rescued from the brutal practice of bear dancing. The kalandar gypsies that depended on exploiting these bears were established in alternative livelihoods by Wildlife SOS to ensure the safety of the bears and a legal way of life for the community. This center is run entirely from Donations raised by Wildlife SOS. The Forest Department charges an Admission of Rs 500 for Foreign Nationals and Rs 50 for Indians. These fees do not go to support the bear rescue center. Wildlife SOS offers conservation educational visit combined with interaction with bear experts. A donation is requested from visitors to help care for the animals. Wildlife SOS also runs the Elephant Conservation & Care Center, home to over 32 rescued elephants ; a 15 min drive from the bear sanctuary.

A very special place, especially for people who are passionate about animal welfare
The SOS bear and elephant rescue centres are located an hour from the centre of Agra. Regardless of distance we decided we wanted to visit to learn more about the animals and support the work they are doing and booked a taxi driver for the day at a cost of 3,500RS. Visiting the 2 centres also presented an ideal opportunity to visit the Tomb of Akbar the Great which is on route and quieter than the main sites. We contacted SOS direct to arrange our tour as you cannot just turn up. Visits are limited for animal welfare. We had a really interesting educational tour of both SOS facilities. If you have a passion and interest in animal welfare then you will enjoy a visit here, however if you are expecting an experience that is similar to a zoo then you will be disappointed. They ask for a donation of 2,500RS per person and we were happy to pay this as we really enjoyed our tour. It is also important to understand that without donations they are unable to continue the amazing work they do. Hearing the history of the animals is heart breaking, however we felt happy this organisation exists and there are people who work so hard and passionately to ensure the animals can live out the remainder of their lives in a happy place. Note there is also a small charge levied by the bird sanctuary. This is because SOS is located within the grounds and unfortunately this charge is unavoidable. This was slightly frustrating, as birds are only there during the winter and were there out of season. In summary a very special place.
Thank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. Your recommendation to other travelers to visit Wildlife SOS and support our association is appreciated. This helps us spread the word of compassion and help support the care of bears and elephants. We look forward to seeing you again. May we please request you to check out the website of refusetoride and spread the word to your friends and family so they can help us protect elephants and prevent elephant abuse. Warm regards Team Wildlife SOS

A conservation center that really does care
I must admit I’m a little skeptical whenever I see the word ‘sanctuary’ or ‘rehabilitation’, but Wildlife SOS is the first place I’ve seen that really do put the animals first. Me and my partner chose to do the Elephant Conservation option. Himanshu- our guide is a credit to the organisation, he explained everything that Wildife SOS are involved in and described the Center as a retirement home, which we thought was fantastic. All of the elephants at Wildife SOS have been rescued and have suffered horrific abuse over their lives, and Wildlife SOS’s main focus is to educate the visitors and help rehabilitate the elephants mental and physical trauma so they can enjoy what time they have left. This is a must for anybody interested in conservation and absolutely not for anybody wishing to ride, feed, paint or even touch an elephant. Keep up the great work guys!!
Thank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. Your recommendation to other travelers to visit Wildlife SOS and support our association is appreciated. Forget the Taj Mahal - come here!
My visit to Wildlife SOS' Bear and Elephant Sanctuaries were the highlight of my trip to India. It was so inspirational to see and hear from Shivam about the rescue of elephants from the street and the great facility they have built to provide them with the care and love they need. I could have spent days just watching them. I knew less about the plight of dancing bears but it was interesting to hear from Harendra about how every dancing bear has now been rescued and see how they're enjoying relaxing in their new home. I might have liked to spend a bit longer just observing but it was nice to have some time to walk around the beautiful bird sanctuary too.

Awesome - please book this rather than a trip that allows elephant painting/ riding
An amazing place. I love animals and wanted to see some Elephants on my trip to India but I’m always thoughtful about their welfare. I’m so glad that i chose to visit SOS rather than contribute to their misery by buying into a trip that allows you to paint or ride the elephants. I learned so much and had a wonderful experience observing them in a setting that’s much better for their well-being. The project takes care of elephants which have been rescued and aims to end the practice of keeping them in captivity’s please, please consider this much better option before you book onto anything else

    educational, beautiful animals
On recomendation: We pre booked, were given a time slot and visited Elephant SOS. What an amazing job this centre is doing for previously abused and exploited elephants. They are given a personalised healthy diet and on going veterinary care. It is the equivalent of a nursing/care home. No elephant rides, painting or made to perform tricks. This centre is about nursing and on going care for these beautiful animals. Some very sad stories about some of the elephants but good to see them live out the rest of their lives being cared for in comfort.

    A must visit
Brilliant place. The staff were amazing and the bears (and to be honest, all the wildlife there) were happy and relaxed. The bears are very obviously well cared for and are allowed to follow their natural nocturnal habits. That being said, we saw 5 bears who woke for their fruit meal - that was a huge bonus! I remember well seeing dancing bears at Dhabas on multiple trips to India in the 90’s and this dedicated group of conservationalists really have stopped this practice. But the most impressive thing was their holistic approach which absolutely blew all of us away. Our group included child protection officers and health care workers and we wish the organisations we work for could be this holistic! Travel advice: contact the organisation and give a donation to then visit as a donor. The person who answered my email actually met us at the gate and took us for the tour. He also let the bird sanctuary (we had to pass through) know we were coming. It is so rare to find such a personal touch. I will absolutely be visiting, but more importantly, donating again. Thank you Wildlife SOS!

    Beautiful, emotional, educational
This is what elephant experiences should be; we had an educational and emotional day learning about the trauma working elephants go through and why the work of Wildlife SOS is so crucial. Our guide was fantastic and knowledgeable and we had a hospitable and tasty lunch. Worth every penny to see elephants finally living out their days with dignity and peace.

    Wonderful experience
I heard about this place while I was planning my travel to India, and I felt it was a must go. The experience was so intense and special. I visited the Bear Rescue center first and the Elephant rescue facility too. The efforts these people make everyday to give to abused animals a new life is amazing. Here live bears and elephants who suffered for so many years of abuses, now discovering a new peaceful and beloved life. After learning their heartbreaking stories you can feel a sense of relief by knowing that they are now safe. People working there are so kind and you can feel how much they care about the animals, you can see through their pure hearts. The centers are supported by donations but it's truly the most well spended money.

Its regretful that you had a bad experience in Agra but you have posted your comments and review on the wrong trip advisor page. The Agra BearRescue Facility is run by Wildlife SOS who does not receive any revenue from the sale of tickets at the gate by Uttar Pradesh forest department. You obviously missed the educational tour that is organised by Wildlife SOS that would have been extremely fulfilling as you can read from the positive reviews on this trip advisor page of Wildlife SOS. The enclosures you describe as sad and dirty but thats what sloth bears do to any enclosure. They dig large holes and pits looking for termites, bugs and ants 🐜. They also climb trees and destroy branches looking for bee hives & honey. These sloth bears are very special and turn anything into a construction site :-), but they have a great deal of fun doing that and thats what we hope to achieve. You will be happy to learn that every single bear was rescued from a life of torture where they were used for begging on the streets. The Wildlife SOS team has devoted 22 years of our lives to help these bears so please be assured this is not a scam at all. This is the single largest conservation success story and we have successfully ended the poaching of hundreds of innocent bear cubs by providing alternative livelihoods to the tribals who used to exploit the bears for decades. Its very unfortunate that you have misinterpreted the forest department's admission fees for entry into soor sarovar bird sanctuary as something Wildlife SOS has charged you for and therefore had an obligation to provide you a fulfilling experience. This is not the case at all. You can see from the positive comments on this trip advisor page from people who visited the bear sanctuary after connecting with us for our educational tour that we offer a great experience. We have supporters across the world who are involved with our work and tell you that our bears are the most pampered bears in the entire world. We would be happy to give you more details if you would email us on visit@wildlifesos.org with your contact details. Once again we assure you that this is not what you think it is. If you wish to send comments about your payments when you visited you may like to comment on the soor sarovar bird sanctuary trip advisor page. Your comments reflects badly on a charity that is doing genuine work for no fault of theirs and because you got shortchanged by a different authority. We would greatly appreciate it if you would be so kind as to remove your comments as it does reflect the factual position and oblige. Kind regards. Team Wildlife SOS

We visited both the Bear and Elephant rescue centres. They were both fantastic, and what amazing work the staff there do. This is a must for anybody who wants to enjoy animals without the cruelly of the animal tourist trade. We found the elephant sanctuary quite emotional when you realise how long some endure the cruelty at the hands of humans. Its lovely to see them living lives filled with kindness now. The bear sanctuary is equally wonderful and nice to see the bears living good lives away from cruelty. The tours we had were so informative and the guides were full of knowledge and their passion for the animals was very evident. Great sanctuaries who do amazing work

We had the best time at Wildlife SOS Agra Bear sanctuary, as well as the Elephant sanctuary! This is an amazing charity which rescues and cares for abused and neglected animals. When choosing a sanctuary to visit in India, it was so important to us that it was cruelty-free and the animals were not being exploited. Wildlife SOS not only cares for these animals, but they educate their visitors and the local community about ways we can help put an end the exploitation these animals have endured.

The centres are very close to Agra and are only 20 mins away from each other (by car), so my partner and I visited both in the same day. I would 100% recommend doing this! Wildlife SOS even arranged a driver for us for the day.

Certainly a charity we will be supporting from now on, and would 100% recommend to anyone visiting Agra .

We took a day out to go and see the sloth bear and elephant sanctuaries run by wildlife SOS and it was very worth it. The sloth bears clearly have much better lives here than they did before as dancing bears and it's great to see them being rehabilitated and actually getting back to behaving like sloth bears. The staff obviously car deeply for these animals and it shows. The guide we had showing us around spoke very good English, answered any questions that we had and clearly had a strong bond with the bears. If you visit it will be during the day, so remember that sloth bears normally like to sleep at this time so they won't be super active (but this is a good thing as it means that their behaviour is changing from being dancing bears)! 10/10 recommend a visit.

This helps us spread the word of compassion and help support the care of bears and elephants. We look forward to seeing you again. May we please request you to check out the website of refusetoride and spread the word to your friends and family so they can help us protect elephants and prevent elephant abuse. Warm regards Team Wildlife SOS
