We had not heard about Avalanche lake during any of our previous trips to Ooty. We went there based on a recommendation and it was a very pleasant surprise. It is a roughly 30kms drive (each way) from Ooty and the road is mostly good (the last 1km is being re-laid and can get a bit narrow). The lake has multiple viewing spots and each of them are quite beautiful. It is mostly secluded and sees a few tourists which is a rarity when compared to the hustle and bustle of Ooty town.

It inside the hills . From Ooty town around 21 km. Roads are narrow but way to there have a good nature scenery. At half a day we should spend there. There if not a mansoon we can play in water . There is a jeep safari also they charge 250 per head.
Visiting here vl b a good experience.

Very nice place. Although a little off-route and very less known, but its really beautiful and a must place to visit. The road which leads to Avalanche lake is very scenic, you get very nice view of Nilgiris and the destination is amazing. There is a small government canteen at the lake which serves delicious food and have decent variety available. It have an ample parking space to park your vehicle.

We weren't sure about visiting this place but let me tell you its just like heaven on earth. Very serene and unadulterated. Very less population at the spot. Though its a little far away from the city center but definitely worth the visit.

The lake is situated amongst forest area. The drive is very charming. The lake too is beautiful. There is an Avalanche river which leads to the Avalanche lake. You have to park your vehicle at forest check post. It is just half a kilometre walk to the lake. It is very scenic location as you move along the river and you have to pass through a small pine forest also. If you have half day to spare , you can definitely visit it. Post Covid they have stopped boating and night camping here.

Best beautiful place in ooty. Must visit this place.Because avalanche situated in the forest and the way is very beautiful and adventure. Forest officers won't allow private vehicle to forest.Only forest vehicle allowed.A wild life Safari trip in a covered van is a good option.

The Kings Cliff hotel told us that it was open . We drove and hour and it has been closed since August of 2019. At the time they told us that the park would be closed for at least 6 more months because of an avalanche that has closed the roads.

No need to get any permits, but private vehicles are not allowed near the lake, you need to buy ticket and get into Jeeps run by the government, so visit early ( at least before 1 PM) as the queue will be long here.

No you should not go the same day
There in avalanche depending upon the rush of people they send buses or jeep. After 1pm they stop sending buses in forest. It is better to reach early around 11 or 12pm which is not possible for you as it is 25km away from ooty and will take 2hours to reach there. This everything approximately I have answered.

no idea
I'm planning to go to this place by 6 in the morning. Will it be open. Or do we need any permission for the forest department or the police.

You can go to their entry point any time, and earlier is better, especially if you are going in peak season. There are limited seats available in their buses.
However, beyond the entry point, you are allowed only in their buses/ jeeps, which start much later at 8:30/9
They have a small canteen there which serves good breakfast.
