Beautiful place to visit. I must say if you are traveling to ooty then you must visit Avalanche lake. But jungle safari is not worthy. Overall beutiful calming natural beauty.

This secluded place in Ooty, was the best experience we had in the trip. We didn't want to come back from here. The drive to the lake and s scenic from Ooty, the last few stretches are narrow and tough. From the parking area one needs to walk for 10 mins, along the stream of shallow waters at first. Then, we witnessed an absolutely mesmerizing view of Lake, mountains, sunlight and greenary. The place was not crowded at all. It is aloof from any hustle and noise that you would experience at say Ooty lake or Doddabetta peak. The serene peaceful environment makes it that much more enjoyable. Must visit. I didn't want to come back.

It is one of the less touristy things you can do in Ooty. The lake is nice and the safari to the jungle is also nice though short and not very eventful in terms of animal sightings. place is very clean and green. Place seems less crowded probably because its ~ 20 km away from city center. On the way back to city, one can sight the Emerald lake as well which too is scenic.

Lake was totally dry but there was a beautiful rivulet flowing thro' the middle of it and all had a great time in the rivulet...It was like being transported to the states of HP or UK where you'll find small flowing rivulets.

We visited here in June and did not find any water. Everyone came here for the beautiful view and Instagram worthy pics. But there was no water. The view is good but the water was missing. Maybe in the rainy season, the water level will be up and it might be a nice view. The route to Avalanche lake has so many scenic views that even when water was not in the lake, we didn't regret going there.

We had not heard about Avalanche lake during any of our previous trips to Ooty. We went there based on a recommendation and it was a very pleasant surprise. It is a roughly 30kms drive (each way) from Ooty and the road is mostly good (the last 1km is being re-laid and can get a bit narrow). The lake has multiple viewing spots and each of them are quite beautiful. It is mostly secluded and sees a few tourists which is a rarity when compared to the hustle and bustle of Ooty town.

It inside the hills . From Ooty town around 21 km. Roads are narrow but way to there have a good nature scenery. At half a day we should spend there. There if not a mansoon we can play in water . There is a jeep safari also they charge 250 per head.

Do you need some permission to go on a simple visit to the lake or is there some other attraction around the lake which needs permission? I am in Coonoor next week so would appreciate any information on the same. I plan to go in a booked cab. Thanks

No need to get any permits, but private vehicles are not allowed near the lake, you need to buy ticket and get into Jeeps run by the government, so visit early ( at least before 1 PM) as the queue will be long here.

No you should not go the same day
There in avalanche depending upon the rush of people they send buses or jeep. After 1pm they stop sending buses in forest. It is better to reach early around 11 or 12pm which is not possible for you as it is 25km away from ooty and will take 2hours to reach there. This everything approximately I have answered.

no idea
I'm planning to go to this place by 6 in the morning. Will it be open. Or do we need any permission for the forest department or the police.

You can go to their entry point any time, and earlier is better, especially if you are going in peak season. There are limited seats available in their buses.
However, beyond the entry point, you are allowed only in their buses/ jeeps, which start much later at 8:30/9
They have a small canteen there which serves good breakfast.
