We booked a gypsy jungle safari online. The online booking process was smooth. I was also charged for camera and LMV parking during the booking process. When we reached the safari point, the staff asked me to park on the road. I don't know why they charged me for parking. The safari started on time. There was no guide, the driver could not speak any language other than Tamil, so it was difficult to communicate and the whole trip was like we were on entirely our own looking around trying to spot wildlife. It seemed like there is only one track in the jungle and the driver kept going on that path like a robot without stopping. We had to tell him to stop so that we could take some pictures. Unfortunately, we could not spot any animals except a wild boar and a captive elephant. An obvious comparison comes up with the Bandipur safari. First of all, you pay almost 5K at both Mudumalai and Bandipur but the safari lasts only one hour in Mudumalai whereas duration at Bandipur is 2 hours. Bandipur does not charge for regular small cameras but Mudumalai does. At Bandipur, a guide accompanies you on the safari who explains the flora and fauna of the forest. Most of these guides can speak English or Hindi besides Tamil and Kannada which is a plus. Lastly, it is true that animal sighting is a matter of luck but it is a matter of fact that Bandipur has much more successful sightings compared to Mudumalai. Overall, the safaris at Mudumalai can be better managed and organized. It is clearly not worth paying for a safari at Mudumalai.

Be aware during the trip package arranged by tour operators package included for mudumalai forest safari ride.
Tour operator Cab driver actually took us to masinagudi road side Jeep side safari show for Rs 2500 a non recognised private jeeps instead of the actual forest safari.
This is exactly not inside the mudumalai forest. Its a outer view of the forest and outer roadside and village show.Think this usually have a Forest ride will have the forest entry ticket and jeep Safari tickets.
When questioned safari driver they don't have any of this. it's all a preplan of the tour driver to cut the travel distance to take us to the mudumalai forest. We were got cheated on this trip make sure of getting inside of mudumalai forest by purchasing entry ticket that's the actual sightseeing of mudumalai forest and Jeep Safari.

It's a great drive of you are confident about your driving skills. The road is not that great, of course it's through forest.... But the local vehicles are driving like it's national highway. On our ride early morning, was a big group of deer, monkeys of two types, elephants and peacocks. Most interesting was a big family of humans with old and infants trying to take picture near an elephant who was trying to cross the road. Well, the elephant was well mannered and didn't kill anybody. It's a forest and give little respect to that area.

I'm not sure if I can call it Safari. It's not easy to get any information about safari options and elephant camp, until you actually get in the park. Prices for governmental safari are ridiculous. Probably governmental guides will push you to pay more or buy something. I had much better experience in other countries. Not worth the price.

Please Dont choose private jeep safari in masinangudi. They are not allowed to take you to the off-road. If you have your owned/hired vehicle, drive on your own. It is purely based on your luck to see the animals. Better time would be after 4.30 pm. Because we were able to see some bear, elephants at that time. We are not allowed to stop the vehicle on the mayar road. We can stop the vehicle once we reach the Mayar dam. You can park your vehicle in the road(Down side of veepothi malai) to visit veepothi malai. Only jeep can be driven to the upstairs. But it is walkable distance only. Not advisable to older people by walk. There is one small murugan temple in the top and view point is too good

Neither we stayed in Mudumalai nor taken a safari. But we enjoyed not only spotting, even photographing the wild life. From Bangalore we took the route through Mudumalai to Ooty. The road has speed limit and plenty of road humps. The car in front slows down, means they spotted an animal. The peacocks and the langur monkeys were posing for us on the side of the road. The elephants, bisons, different types of deers, wild boars etc were there within 300 meters from the road. We can not stop the car - nor we can get down from the car. But the drive itself was very thrilling. We missed the big cat though!

The rating is for the experience at the safari, we had hired a private gypsy which was the best part of the safari.
From a jungle perspective it's a large jungle with 80+ tigers but unfortunately we couldn't see a single one. These things are on luck so I am hoping other travellers are more lucky.
Main problem is that all 7-8 cars/campers/buses go on the same route which I find a bit stupid as the the first few enjoy the quietness of the jungle and other are around noisemaking campers and buses

The Mudumalai tiger Reserve was the highlight of my 6 weeks in south India ( Tamil Nadu) . I have never been to India before and spent 6 days at the Jungle hut on the edge of the Mudumalai Reserve. On the first night there was a wild bull elephant next to the summing pool at the Jungle hut, he feed there for a few hours and moved on in the early morning. I also saw deer and monkeys just out side my room, (see pix). The staff and particularly the management at the jungle hut
were very good, accommodating, helpful and inclusive. I would recommend a visit.
The only down side was the elephant camp was closed for a week due to a visit from the President of India, incredible India all right!

Can we plan a trip to mudumalai will the police allow us
I'm asking this question because due to covid 19 there's lock down in few places
Can we travel or no

I need information about Mudumalai National Park Visit and Safari. Planning the trip to Ooty for 4 days in last week of March.
1. I will be travelling to Mudumalai park from Ooty, is there any Specific permit required to visit the National park?I don't mean entry fee or camera fees or Safari fees, I mean permit, like you need to go to Rohtang Pass from Manali. If yes, where to get one?
2. Is bus Safari a good option ? Or need to hire sepearate Jeep to enjoy the sighting of animals?
3. Which road to take? I read somewhere that there are couple of points like 6th mile or 9th mile or Needle rock point which people do the same day as of the Safari. So asking for a route to have those points while returning to Ooty(planning Safari in the morning to avoid rush)
4. Is Kotagiri a worth visiting place just for Kodanad point? I doubt waterfalls would be a good sight seeing towards end of March. So barring Catherine falls, Kodanad point is the only place I find on TripAdvisor that looks interesting.
5. Are there any cab service providers who provide a temp driver, I am planning to visit coonoor via the UAM ONR passenger in the morning and have my car dropped at Coonoor station for me(don't need driver after that) Need to know if people provide driver for this kind of service. I have seen it at Rafting places where for certain amount there will be guys who can drop your vehicle at the end point of rafting but not sure if something similar might be available at Ooty.

-no permit required
-jeep safari more expensive, mini bus is ok per head 328
-6th mile nothing to see its changed to golf ground
-9th mile u can visit while returning back to ooty and needle rock and pine forest
-for safari u need to take government vehicle only

I need the timings, fare and other particulars of visiting this forest
Written 6 November 2019
The forest may be visited, through jeep safari, elephant safari, or canter safari. Jeep safari is best for one family, and cost around rupees 5000.00. Jeep and other safari are available only before 10 a.m. morning and 3.00 to 5.00 in evening. Best time to visit is early morning.

You could directly get tickets at the entrance counter , once you visited. There is no reservation needed. But the timing will be there.
