The lake is one of the best as far as I have heard among ooty tourist places. We started early from ooty to reach avalanche lake which is around 18-20 kms from Ooty main centre. But luck is not with us, as we are on the way, we had been informed that forest department has closed the road leading to the lake due to landslide. So we retuned without seeing the marvelous lake.
I have some of the basic information which might helpful :
To explore upper bhavani lake one has to reach around 9 or 9.30 AM at the gate of forest office as rush of tourist increases afterward. Tourist has to park their vehicle there and buy entry ticket to board the forest deptt. bus.
Bus tour takes around 2 hours and three point covered are cauliflower forest, Bhavani Amman Temple and Upper Bhavani Lake.

This should be why you should visit Ooty not for crowded busy street hill town.
Go to Avalanche Forest Reserve sharp at 9:30 AM, buy tickets for a forest bus that will take you to a forest drive. Private vehicles are not allowed beyond this point.
You will visit cauliflower shola , bhavani amman temple, upper bhavani lake view point.
Cauliflower shola is very unique forest. They look like they have been cut to look better and even but actually they are natural. Upper Bhavani lake view point is mesmerizing. Must visit.

Don't waste your time roaming around busy Ooty streets.. This is one such "MUST VISIT" places around Ooty, around 70 km from the town. Roads are not that great ,rather very bad at some areas. Start early morning after your breakfast so that you can reach there by 9.30 -10. You can park your vehicles in the base location ,remember very less parking slots,so start early from Otty. There are Jeep's and buses operated by the forest department which will take you inside forest . Awesome weather, Picturesque and breathtaking views. Totally worth driving though all those bad roads :)

After crossing the avalanche road and talking the safari, this is the second stop where the mountain water origins as it flows it creates waterfalls, which makes this a scenic view. The temple is small. A photogenic place and as describes by the guide it looks good in winter (on season).

There's two ways to visit the reservoir - via the dam, or via Avalanchi forest reserve. The second is easier to achieve - reach the forest reserve, and utilise the eco-friendly escorted service to the Upper Bhawani Reservoir. Worth the visit and the drive.

Route from ooty to upper Bhavani lake by car. How is it? I am a mediocre level driver and I drive to ooty from Bangalore via my own car via Gudalur avoiding hair pin bend roads .. Will it be similar roads or very steep terrains? Please suggest

I would like to answer my own question.. the route is now very good till the end point where u can drive.. it's not very steep but yes it is curvy..the road is completely made without a single pothole till you park your car and take forest vehicle for further route.. Now when you board govt vehicle for ride to 3 points the road are not well. But since u just have to sit and enjoy the beautiful nature , you should be least bothered.

Is Upper Bhavani lake and dam are different attractions or the same? I clearly understand the process to get permission and where to reach, but my doubt is about the dam and lake. Can anyone please help me in this?

The reservoir of the dam is spread over a length of nearly 11 km. The dam is at a distance of 2+ hrs drive from Ooty. There is a TNEB guest-house there.
The reservoir extends into Avalanchi Forest Reserve. A eco-tourism drive by the Forest department takes you to the upper-end of the reservoir (actually, shows you the origin of the Bhavani river).
Both of these locations are different, approached differently, and hours of drive away from each other.

Hello, I and my wife are going to Ooty in a few days and are planning to visit the Upper Bhavani lake. So just wanted to ask what is the best way to get permit from the forest department. Is it as simple as simply walking up to the District Forest Officer and getting the permit (of course after paying the necessary fees and all)? Or, you have to know someone in the department to get this permit? We will greatly appreciate any help in this regard. Thanks so much! Ankur

The answer above is absolutely correct.
The per-head fees is Rs 250/-, and an additional fees for cameras and video-cameras; phone cameras are not charged.
I would suggest reaching by 9 am. The first organised bus trip starts at 9-30 am. Buses run every 30-min till 4 pm.
It takes about 2 hrs for a full trip. There is no way to turn back half-way, unless you meet a returning bus and return (this is to be pre-warned regarding emergencies)

Is it the right time to visit Ooty? Planning in first week of June. N how many days r required for a comfortable Ooty trip with 5 hrs driving distance to and fro from journey start to destination

Ooty temperature is around 27°C on a sunny day in the shade. Sun can be scorching - carry sun-screen (SPF 30 will suffice).
Thunderstorms have started, and will continue through June. The normal time of occurrence is mid-day to afternoon. During the rain, temperature drops to 21°C, if there is no wind. Wind-chill factor of 2-5°C applies with wind-speed.
Other than weather (it's far better than the weather in the plains), Ooty is horribly crowded just now - just about everybody from the plains can be seen on the week-ends. Weekdays are more manageable. Getting around by road can be taxing on the nerves - sometimes, it takes 2 hrs to cover 7 km on the main road (NH181). Outside of Ooty is comfortable - even to attractions.
