It is great to get up high and see the area. There were big crowds on a Monday 9am in March. There are lots of shops and eateries at the top of the mountain. We were hoping for a pastoral, hiking trip and found a thriving commercial venture on top of a mountain. We wanted to be in nature and were disappointed.

Good place to visit with nice eateries, street food, clean toilets, 100 meter walking to be done to reach the place. Place shows various view points from the peak using telescope. Telescopes were closed due to maintenance when we visited. This peak is one of the highest peaks in South India so must visit.Do carry a jacket for kids as it gets a bit cold.

We had planned to ‘trek’ the 3 km from Doddabetta Junction however trekking is currently forbidden due to tigers having caused 3 recent fatalities - fair enough. By then you are a captive market for overpriced return jeep journeys to the summit (600INR in our case). In hindsight the trekking path appears to be the road to the summit and would have been a very unpleasant hike so maybe the jeep option, overpriced that it was, was not so bad? The summit itself is a parking area with tacky gift & snack stalls - the viewing platform building costs a further 10 INR p/p. Nevertheless the views are pretty good in all directions and the place provides an authentic local tourism experience.

I feel bad when a beautiful part of nature is heavily commercialised. It might have become accessible in the process but it’s beauty has been ruined. Underwhelming experience.

First of all, we had intended to walk the road up to the peak but that is not permitted due to safety issues, ie. narrow road and fast drivers. So plan on hiring a driver at the bottom of the road known as Doddabetta Junction. We arranged for him to drop us off then pick us up three hours later to allow plenty of time for exploration.
There are great vista from the mountain. We did not walk the whole way up to the viewing platform as there was a charge for that and we were mainly there for birding.
There are many vendors in the outdoor market along the sidewalk leading from the parking area to the mountaintop. They were selling a variety of things from fresh fruits and grains to cheap toys for kids. It was sad that all the waste and litter from this market was just being dumped over the edge of the hill. The parking area was especially nasty with lots of litter even though plastic is supposedly banned but there must not be any enforcement on site.
Doddabetta Peak was our destination for one or two specific birds we wanted to see and we got great views of one of them. Three hours was the perfect amount of time to allow for visiting the area.

On a hill top. Has very good views of the valleys over a 180 degree view. But very crowded. Not clean. The shops leading to the view point spoil the place. Not clean at all.
It has an elevated view point. The telescopes I am sure are permanently out of order. This elevated point is filthy and as expected over crowded to take photos. Good views of valley are available on the steps to this elevated platform, and as expected everyone stands on these steps for photo sessions and blocks the way up and down and also the view. ( we also did it ). I though guess, everyone will definitely visit this place.
The major attraction would have been the walkways down the hillside.....but these are all closed and out of bounds.
Also only go if you are sure there is no fog and mist. Otherwise there will be no view of the valleys.

Doddabetta is the highest Peak in the Tamil Nadu and is about 10 km from Ooty bus stand. The name Doddabetta literally means 'Big mountain' in the Badugu Language, which is so in reality. It is at the junction of Western and Eastern Ghats and offer beautiful vistas of Nilgiri Hills range.
The entry ticket fee is Rs.10 per person and it is about 7/10 minutes walking/climbing steps from the parking place. There is plenty of roadside shops through out the way and some time big crowd there blocking the easy entry to the park.
Other than the Peak view (Telescope house), nothing much to see/explore there, except a nice garden around. Anyway, no doubt It is a popular tourist attraction in Ooty.

Yes. No requirements whatsoever. Fill your tank as there are no petrol bunks once you enter Bandipur forest till you reach Ooty.
How to travel from city center? Also, how is the public transport to visit nearby places in ooty

If you drive it the parking lot there's nothing much to walk. You won't even notice how much you have walked when you will see the view

Can I visit this peak via my own car ? Someone was mentioning roads not being nice. If no, what is the alternate way to visit this peak?

The difficulty is only in the rainy season or during winters when there is lot of mist and clouds making the road invisible though u can move on with fog lights.I was born and brought up there in Coonoor there are other beautiful places in and around ooty like the wen-lock downs, gymkhana club in coonoor-- lambs rock and dolphins nose view points. There is a hill you can see on the left hand side very prominently when you climb the road up from Mettupalayam to coonoor called as PAKASURAN MALAI where supposedly Tipu Sultan had a tunnel built underground from mysore to escape the Britishers. Ask me more about Nilgiris will be happy to reply ...

There is public transport but you have to get down at particular place and take a jeep. As this place is on steep hill. As far food is concern there is no good hotel.
How many sights did they show in full day?
