An early start at 5.30am in the dark, but well worth it to walk through the streets and witness how early mornings start in the cow farming area of old Madurai. We learnt about Kolam which are drawings made by women every daybreak outside their houses and these are meant to bring prosperity to their homes. We saw cows being milked and learnt about fresh water being collected each morning.
We then visited the fruit & vegetable markets - amazing array of produce the likes of which we had never seen before.
I had scented flowers put in my hair by a local lady.
We finished with a dosa breakfast.
A very informative tour.

Karthik took us on this early morning walking tour of the back streets and market areas of Madurai. It provided a fascinating insight into daily life for many Indian folk - milking the cows, creating beautiful kolam and buying and selling foodstuffs. It's a fantastic trip into the crazy street life of everyday Madurai. We also had delicious chai and adirasam. Karthik explained things as we went along and we certainly learned lots. The reason for 4 rather than 5 is that, compared to a similar tour in Chennai, this felt rather formulaic and far less like a flowing conversation, which is our personal preference.

We had an outstanding guide. Professional, friendly, and a fountain of knowledge. He explained things very well, patiently answered our questions, and was concerned about our welfare. He helped to bring the Indian culture within our realm of understanding. Definitely recommend!!

Authentic and respectful way of getting to know the real people of this historic city. We especially appreciated women’s role in family and society. Amazing variety of food items in the market and interesting explanations from our knowledgeable guide, Karthik.

Our evening food safar with Karthik was a highlight of our trip. We had so much fun watching people cooking/baking/frying all sorts of goodies, and then getting to taste them, spicy or sweet or just great surprising new tastes. Went to the largest food truck area we've ever seen, with so many choices and such talented cooks. Great flavors & textures. Restaurants with local tastes and foods. It was a wonderful fun night out.i

Thank you Karthik for our two tours of your wonderful city.
The pre dawn walking tour showing us the back streets and their morning rituals, then on to the chaotic but seemingly very efficient life of the fruit and vegetable markets and of course the blessing of us both by a passing temple elephant.
We were prepared for the evening food safari by not eating all day but not prepared for the excellent variety and in most cases simplicity of the local dishes, which I think were 11 in total. The 5 am rise on this day was indeed well worth it to make this one of our best days of the 3 week tour of southern India with Indian Panorama.
If you have the chance, its one not to be missed.

This was an absolute highlight of our time in Southern India. Amazing to see life, up-close, and learn about the daily rituals and habits of people in this area. We found it incredibly informative, stimulating and interesting. The guide was knowledgeable, thoughtful, and took great care of us on the tour. We took our 12 year old son who also felt that this was a highlight of our trip. For photographers, the markets in the morning light are simply sublime. For travelers that like to immerse themselves in local culture, this is the tour!

Our evening food safari was an amazing experience. We ate at small street stalls, markets and cafes that we would never have thought of going to, and wouldn't have known what to order if we had! It was wonderful - tasty, fascinating, exciting, and we were made to feel very welcome.
We also had an early morning walk. Again, it was fascinating, as our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgable and we experienced the city as it woke up and got ready for the day. More places we would never have seen otherwise and a very different view of the city, finishing off with a delicious breakfast.
I highly recommend both experiences. They were highlights of our three weeks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
