Despite nothing on google or the Madurai tourism webpage it turns out the main museum is shut for renovations. They have left open one very small room displaying a couple of posters which talk through some of the cases he worked on as a lawyer but this isn’t worth visiting. The rest of the site is shut.

We only got to spend about 40 minutes here because the museum closes at 1, but that seemed like plenty of time. There's a LOT to read (not all of which seems necessary), some original artifacts of Gandhi's and a bunch of reproductions. We came here because it was included in our tour but I wouldn't have been upset if we missed it. There's also a recreation of the house where he was born/raised (but you can't go inside) and some of his ashes are also onsite.

Very informative museum depicting the life and struggles of Mahatma Gandhi. Just 5 weeks ago we visited the Gandhi assassination museum in Delhi and it was our further opportunity to continue to learn more about his life. The museum is partially being renovated so unfortunately that takes away from the whole experience. The entry was free but we had to pay for the privilege of taking any photos, even with a cell phone.
The exhibits “read like a book“ and consisted of well composed and informative photo collages with ample historic explanations, dates, famous quotes and descriptions. They were chronological and engaging.
There were also some Tamil Nadu handicrafts on display .
Like all museums in India so far this one was also “dusty”.
Overall it is a very educational institution and a recommended stop for visitors interested in the history of modern India.

It is dedicated to the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi and is housed in the place where he stayed during his visits to Madurai. The museum showcases his life through photographs, letters, and other artifacts that give a glimpse into the life of the Father of the Nation.

Enter fee is nil. Ame space for parking. Easy to access.

Wonderful exhibits on the freedom struggle as well as the life of Gandhiji.
The museum has the blood stained clothes that the Mahathma was wearing when he was gunned down - will surely move one to tears.

Highly recommend to take little children along so that they can learn about the lives and contributions made by freedom fighters for the sake of the nation.

This museum in Madurai is one of the 5 Gandhi Sangrahalya in India. It is a great place to learn history and fight for freedom. You can see lot of objects and writings from Gandhiji. You can buy books and souvenirs here. The blood stained clothes of Mahatma Gandhi is must see in the museum. Have a look at the gallery of images from the Indian freedom movement days. Also don't forget to visit the library in the north wing. Locker rooms are available and pets are not allowed in the premises. This museum is located in the heart of city and hence accessible by bus, car, taxi, hired taxi, auto etc.
