The shops which were part of the pudhu Mandayam were moved to another location. We did not know about this change . When we visited the Mandayam was closed and empty.

This mandapa (colomned hall) is opposite the east gate of the Meenakashi Amman Temple. It was probably part of the temple. It still has many of the features of the actual temple - statues, carvings, pillars - but without any restricted entry, no fees and no photography restrictions. It is partially full with a market which in itself is fascinating and full of things to buy. The central passageway is empty except for statures and carvings. All the storeholders are friendly and give minimal hassle. Also see the 20 or so tailors all sewing with antique sewing machines. Just inside the main entrance are incredible statures of Hindu deities but the best of all is just inside the west wall (eg the one as you enter from the main temple east gate) - the marriage of Sundareshvara (Shiva) and Minakshi (Devi) with Vishnu in attendance. Beautiful - one of the best and most sensitive sculptures in Madurai. Just outside the east entrance is a wonderful Nandi. An absolute MUST if you visit Madurai.

This interesting building, allegedly 16th century CE, seems to have originally been a Hindu Temple, but has now become a market around the perimeter, the inner sanctum seems to be locked with no access, although you can see in. The market traders are selling all sorts, pots & pans, brassware, ironwork, tailors, general dealers and all the usual unwanted 'tatt' found in markets worldwide, the whole place seems to be open most of the time, I called in several times over four days and always open. Lots of stone carvings of gods, one of Meenakshi the three breasted god, above a tailor that made me a cotton Kurta. Barter the tailors down by at least 40%.
Generally a fascinating place right opposite one of the main gates to the main temple.
