Quite place to spend with family... If you climb up the steps and reach the top of the dam, you get an amazing view of the water, mountains and islands. There is a boating facility on top ( with life vests). Monkeys provide additional entertainment, though you have to be careful if you buy fruits from local vendors. Monkeys in that area have a tendency to snatch food from your hands.
Fish fry and fruits are the only options for eating. Worth spending an hour.
Best suited for a quite and calm trip with families.

Please plan your trip only between September - Jan, since this is the time you can expect water flow to the dam otherwise be ready to visit a dry dam, But we went on Sept and it was quite good though not maintained, there is no entry fee, no security, so beware,
But the dam is quite good when water is even at minimal, if there is proper maintenance this can be turned into a good picnic spot, there is boating inside the dam, be sure to tip the boatman once you are inside the boat and ask him to take a bit deep, you might be able to witness few wild animals on the shore of the dam
There is a crocodile park nearby which you can visit, the entry fee is just 2rs,
There is also a falls few kms away from the falls, do not purchase any soft drinks or package water near the falls these are adulterated, even branded drinks are adulterated so be aware of this, also note that this falls might be tiring for elderly people and for kids so take this into account, while bathing do not try to get into the water between the rock, it might look shallow but few are quite deep, the bathing place is quite mossy and can be slippery,
Do not miss the canal on the way to the falls from the dam, you can have your lunch here its quite good, but do not wade deep into to the water AT ANY COST
Points to note
DAM - Not good for newly wedded couple since there is no SECURITY
Crocodile farm - Do visit
Falls - Do not buy anything near the falls, watch your steps once you reach the falls

This place has lost everything and it is extremely poorly maintained specially the park downstairs. When you climb up the view is bit better when there is water and nature adds it own touch. However least maintained park which is past its prime days.

Located near Pollachi, this is yat another dam which serves the basic function of a water reservoir than a tourist spot. This place is not suitable for vist during the dry season as there will be little water in the reservoir. Also during this time very few people will be visiting. It might even be little unsafe as during my visit, I happened to spot some people boozing of in a distant spot. There is no proper security and the place is not much maintained in tourists point of view.
This place is known for crocodiles. There is a crocodile park nearby and will be pleasing for animal lovers and kids. They have quite a good collection of crocodiles. I have heard rumors of spoting crocodiles in the reservoir. So please do check with the locals before entering the back waters.
Don't expect to find hotels for having food. There will be tender coconut available and some petty snacks shops. This place is good for a stop over. But during the monsoons with rains, this place will be beautiful to look at and spend some time with the friends chatting.

We visited this on the way back from Munnar. While going to Munnar, it is on the left before entering the picturesque Chinnar wild-life sanctuary. To me it appeared that the dam premises were not designed to receive visitors. There is no entry fee, no security. You can climb up the stairs to reach the dam. No one is allowed on the main section of the dam. You get a good view of the reservoir. I could not find any restaurant nearby. You can budget around 45 minutes. There is a park at the base of the dam. I went in the after-noon when the sun was scorching. I could not find the park very interesting.

This place has lost its sheen. I had visited this place decades ago as an excursion from school. Back then there used to be lots of birds, deer & crocodiles which were well maintained. The park within the dam was beautiful and as kids we ran between trees.
Now all that remains is a few crocodiles. The park is pathetic. You won't enjoy your picnic. The dam itself is in good condition and the credit goes to the team who built it.

how to i reach dam from Coimbatore(facilities) and are we allowed into hydro-electric power station at the dam

Coimbatore->pollachi->udumalpett->amaravati dam (on the way to marayur or Munnar)
Use your own vehicle is highly recommended as I am not sure about the bus/train connection availability.
Another option is: You can take train from Coimbatore to palani and from there you can take KSRTC bus to kerala which is passing through amaravati area.
Entering hydro electric power station- honestly, I did not enter there. So, not able to give a firm answer on it.
