Lake at High altitude. Road route to the lake is not in good shape. But like is beautiful. Kids below 9 and elder people are not allowed to travel to lake due to decrease in oxygen level. My son got faint after reaching their, and provided oxygen at army hospital. So take care if you are going with elder and kids, and don't go if have asthma.

One of the highest lake at 17800ft with amazing views and energy! Once you reach there its breathtaking view of the glacier and the frozen surface will mesmerise anyone. I went by bike and the road to the lake is very tough. Its almost off roading. Especially during winters better to avoid going there by bike if you are not sure how to manoeuvre though frozen ice on the road (slow speed, no bending, no breaks). Yalks grazing on the other side of the lake, Army bunkers at top of the hills (other side is China) are a sight to behold. Start early and leave the place early by 10-11am, else risk of cold strong winds by noon.

We had visited Gurudongmar Lake in the last week of March 2023 and had an wonderful experience. We had visited this place in 2008 May and at that time Lachen used to be a very small hamlet with a few tin houses and permission for visiting the Lake was limited to only 5 to 6 vehicles per day. The road was very bad and we used to start at 4AM in the morning so that we can be there by 11.30 - 12.00Noon. Army post (highest elevation cafe at 15000ft) used to be there to check the travelers and provide help if needed. In contract 2023 visit was much smoother and it takes only 3 hours to reach with fully concrete road (only 4-5km is not fully built). The road condition is also very good and more than 150 vehicles travel daily to the Lake. It is crowded.
On the day of our travel, the roads were fully covered with snow as previous night it had rained and had good snowfall. The trees were fully covered in snow and it was a good experience to travel to the Lake. The beauty is still abundant but the pollution level is increasing with large number of visitors to the Lake daily. We had an excellent trip. Though we carried Diamox, pop corn, sugar candies, etc. as a precaution but we did not really need them/. No oxygen issues there it seems.

To reach Gurudogmar lake, you must suffer both physically and mentally.
It’s not an easy trip to make. Wake up early morning at Lachen in biting cold and struggle on difficult roads for half of the journey.
But when you finally reach the lake, you will forget all the hardships.
Be careful as this is guaranteed to cause you breathing difficulties due to its height.
Don’t talk or waste your energy by walking or running around the lake.
If you have any respiratory problems, carry a portable oxygen can available at military canteen at the final check point.
You will feel nauseous and feel like you’ll lose consciousness if you experience AMS. Don’t take this lightly.
Another sad thing is that, all the taxis and military vehicles around this lake are diesel and they are causing very high levels of pollution. This is just sad and a testament to the fact that humans destroy the natural beauty of anything.

This place is at an highly altitude and offers mesmerising view of the gorgeous lake. The lake is considered holy in many religions. Due to the altitude it’s advisable to spend less than 30 minutes there.
The ride to this place is bumpy in many parts and can cause motion sickness
Good place to visit

Lucky enough for us on weather front we could travel to this beautiful lake. It's like ticking your check box of places you must see when in sikkim.
The roads are good and bad both however shouldn't be much of the problem . One patch is so beautiful that you would love to stop by and click pictures specially when clouds shadows ..Its beautiful.
When on the lake..avoid walking fast or talking too much as you are very high altitude . Usually drivers ther carry oxygen so need not worry. Slow walking and staying calm would help you feel ok ..Get the memories in a photograph..few pics of lake n journey

THe drive to this lake is very difficult. You have to enjoy every bit of the drive. You get to see every faces of Himalayan terrain here. You can see valleys, rivers, snow capped mountains, plain mountain and finally the beautiful and pristine lake. But the wind was too much when we reached there, we could not stay for more than 15 minutes there. The oxygen level is also very less here.

Situated @ 18000 feet.
Beautiful. Surround with snow mountain and muddy mountain as well.
Area under military zone.
Zero oxygen, risky for people with low immunity, lungs issues or asthama.
No rain, no tree.....
Need to carry camphor, water and oxygen cylinder (mandatory by army base)
Be calm and slow @ this point if u wish to go upto lake.

I went to Gurudongmar Lake in April but I left my family at the hotel because we had to leave at 6 in the morning from Lachen. When I went there, I saw that it was a very beautiful sight. There is a lack of oxygen, so I had taken oxygen can with me, and also used it so i wish old people don't go there because of the altitude of 18000ft, But i prefer you to visit here once in your life time.

This is worth 8-9 hours drive from Gangtok… u start early in morning from Lachen to reach here by 9 but all that effort is worthwhile. The view of snow covered mountains on one side, brown mountain on other, sun bright and up and frozen top layer of lake.. what else do u need.
Just don’t over exert there as u get breathless real fast. Carry precautionary Oxygen spray if you have someone slightly sick.

Hi, any possibility of visiting Guru Dongmar Lake in December between 12th-18th? Tour operators are saying it is completely closed, but wanted to cross if that's true.
Written 11 November 2023
Hi, it's at a height of 19k feet ! All roads would be closed .

Hi, I am planning to visit in end December (because of holidays etc) anyone who visited in later part of December in past years, could you please let me know how was your experience?
Written 13 August 2023
December is a big "NO" as the roads are fully covered with snow and if required help will be difficult. You may get a vehicle with chains in the wheels to possibly take you but it is not advisable unless you have company of multiple vehicles. The road at times face avalanche due to heavy snowing. Even reaching the Lachen town becomes difficult at times. It will be snowing and if you love that and want to take the risk as given above, it will be most enchanting place. Please talk to the Cab driver. Santosh Gupta ji, the driver who drove us, may be a good help.

My husband (62) and myself (57) are planning to visit Gurudongmar lake in first week of may. Pl may I know what will be the temperature and precautions to be taken.
Thanks
Written 26 April 2023
Hello, temperature you can check in Internet. There will be no problem in first week of May - rather it is likely to have clear sky. Age is no problem. We were both 63 and visisted and there are older people of 80 years of age going there on daily basis...please carry Diamox (1 tablet you should take previous day / evening). Pop corns will help as well...Luke warm water in a flask will be very useful. There is another homeopathy medicine Coca 30 which you can mix with small quantity of water (10 drops each person when you cross 15000ft...) which will help in case you feel oxygen problem at higher altitude of 16700ft. No issues...I am sure you will enjoy..don't bother about anything as once you are back to Lachen / Lachung city,m you will be fine....Road is excel;lent and you will start at 6AM and you will be back by 1PM....

I'm afraid August is not at all a good time for visiting Gurudongmar Lake. The rains cause havoc and at that altitude it becomes deadly. The Army very rarely gives permit to enter in the monsoon months. Please consider travelling from October onwards.

Gurudongmar lake will open in March 2nd week. Weather conditions?
Written 7 February 2022
There will be plenty of snow in early March. Expect the lake to covered almost fully by a white blanket. The road condition will be dicy, snow and ice may cause road closures frequently. The weather would be much nicer in April and May.
