Finally we ( family of 6) visited this absolutely stunning palace rich in history, color & courage.I highly recommend dedicating half of your day and trust me you will come out full of knowledge and love for this beautiful colorful palace. We had hired a guide ( must have) and that turned out to be our best decision. The palace has many different chambers with each offering stunning views indoors & outdoors, rightly this palace is rich in colors.Dont miss the huge parking space for elephants! Yes! Centuries ago elephant was the major mode of travel for the elites and they still have a parking spot for them. All in all a great place to know history and have a good time with your loved ones.
One more tip ..since you will be walking a lot plz wear good walking shoes.

A Must Visit place, there is much to see here — art, architecture, arms — and it is all well laid out in an understandable path. Great views. Clean toilet. Many narrow stairs and low doorways. Be sure to hire a guide for the full effect. A visit is 2-3 hours.

Visited the City Palace on April 7, 2022. We were two adults and two toddlers. We took an auto-rickshaw to drop us from our stay near the railway station to one of the entrances (near Karni Mata Temple) of the palace. The ticket price is 330 INR per person. The good thing is that there is a polo car ride available at a price of 50 INR per person to take visitors to the palace, as there is a mild-steep walk from the entrance to the museum. The palace is huge and well maintained. The king of the palace lives with his family in one of the portions of the palace, and the rest of the palace is open to the public. The palace has a great collection of antiques and a rich history. The views from various balconies of the palace are breathtaking. There are palace tour guides available at the entrance of the palace, and they charge 300 INR to guide you through the palace. However, we did not hire a guide and made our way through the palace on our own. There are signposts available throughout the palace to help you visit each and every section of the palace. Hence, there is no need to hire a guide. The price for the ticket could have been less given the huge number of tourists that visit the palace.
Although there were child care rooms in place at the palace, they were locked, and hence we could not use them for feeding one of our kids.

Visited the city palace for the 1st time on 19/03/22, while on a Udaipur visit, It s a huge ancient palace with rich cultural heritage depicting the rulers, founders of Udaipur and Mewar era.
Its clean and has numerous rooms wherein art affects have been preserved.
Its advisable to take a authorized guide while visiting the palace.
The darba-diwankhana,meeting and other kothis within are just magnificent. The glass work is superb.
One can see the scenic Udaipur city from the top of the palace.
The royals still stay there which adds to the glamor
A must visit while in udaipur

Read history of Mewar and Udaipur’s rich heritage spanning 6/7 centuries. The visit is an experience of royalty, arts, armour, crystals, and architecture. Managed by Royal family trust, the full experience is a treat. Every Maharana built where his predecessor had left. To know about india and it’s heritage is to visit this palace. Not to be missed. Keep at least half day if not a full one. Take a guide.

The Palace is very huge and beautifully carved out. Do visit with a guide.
Guide is a paisa vasool (worth paying a guide).
It takes minimum 2-3 hours if you want to completely visit the palace. You wont be able to fully admire the beauty of palace in less than 2 hours.
As the premise if huge, do carry water bottles along with you. There are no washrooms inside the premise.
Part of the palace is open for common public, remaining portion is still reserved for the living King (Grandson of the king). Palace time 10am to 6pm. 7pm to 8pm is a light & sound show, which I personally found boring
Our guide explained us the tiniest of the details. The background, the history, the purpose, the engineering part of the palace, and its importance for the people of udaipur..... Elephant fight, Kings swimming pool, story of 16 queen of single king, restriction on women to freely roam, etc. etc.....
You will also know a lot of interesting facts about the celebrity weeding's that took place in this palace, including the famous Ambani wedding :)
Adjacent to this palace is the boating center (Rs 500 in afternoon, Rs 800 in evening). It takes you to Jagmandir, allows you to get down, admire the garden and return back.

It closes at 5:30pm. I would suggest to visit palace in the morning because there is so much to see, it might take an entire afternoon.
When you reach at 2:30 you can explore nearby market or lakes near your accommodation. Or visit lake Pichola for a great sunset. There are sunset boat cruise available there but even sitting on the bank of lake also is an experience.

How long does it take to visit the palace. We will be arriving in Udaipur in day 1 evening. Heading out to ride horses the next morning and back in Udaipur by 1pm. How much can we realistically expect to cover in the remainder of the day ?

The palace with a guide takes about 2.5 hrs max depending on the guide (ours was in a real hurry).
You could definitely attend the 7 p.m. cultural show at Gangaur Haveli (I think that's what it is called), really worth it. Get there early to buy tickets and get good seats. Many people do the boat ride (we didn't due to the rains).
And for dinner, I highly recommend the restaurant in Jagat Niwas.
Hope this helps.
