Do NOT keep any over expectations when going for the Chambal Lake boat ride to watch the Ghariyal (Crocodiles).
While on a 45 minute boat ride, we could only spot about 4 big crocodiles and lots of water birds. The boat ride is otherwise very peaceful and the surroundings are very serene.
The cost of the 45 minutes boat ride is Rs. 700 per person and there are about 12 people cramped on a small boat.
Not really worth the money you spend on the taxi to reach there and the actual boat ride.

We signed up with Rudrapratap Singh.
He organised the taxi pick, drop and boating activities.
The service was prompt and friendly.
Since we were only 2 adults and an infant, We had the option of sharing with another family. Thus the cost was reduced and we were were charged 500 INR per adult.
Failing which we would have had to pay 800 INR per adult for a dedicated boat.
The boat ride was excellent. We got to see plenty of alligators and crocs.
Maggie and tea is available at the boating point.
Tips - stock up on water and any other food items you may require. Being on the river bank there are no shops at the boating point.
In case you are a small group ( less than 4 adults) insist on waiting for people and sharing. It is more cost effective.
Overall a wonderful experience. Must visit.
Happy Travels. 😀

National Chambal gharial sanctuary is one of the biggest river sanctuary in India with around 1700 gharial ( fish eating crocodile). It is also famous for birding with good numbers of Indian skimmers can be seen here. The best place for boat safari is near Dhaulpur Rajasthan and Morena Dist Madhya Pradesh . Both are on either side of Chambal river bridge . We tried MP government boat safari which was good with a guide and they took us for an hour of boating in clean waters of Chambal. We saw gharial, crocodiles and Indian skimmers and few other birds . The place is little difficult to locate. After crossing the bridge there’s a U turn and a cross road on right leads down to the river and boat jetty.

We had a great time at the National Chambal Sanctuary. The guide and staff were very friendly and told us a lot about the wildlife and their experiences. We saw lots of beautiful birds and many Gharials, both male and female and marsh crocodiles. We took a short walk along the shore and enjoyed the beautiful views. Totally worth the detour, especially since we also saw many monkeys on our way. Thanks for having us!

Rudrapratap and his team run a small unit at Palighat Chambal Safari.
They are professional I had booked my crocodile safari with him in advance & we really had a good time. His boatmen are very knowledgeable & patient. They answered all our questions showed us around well. We spotted many fresh water crocodiles & baby ghariyaals along with many bird. My kids really enjoyed the boat safari. If you are doing Ranthambore than I will definitely recommend doing the Palighat Chambal Crocodile safari . Must do it with Rudrapratap

Its an awesome place to see crocodiles and alligators in their natural habitat . The place is not far from Ranthambore National Park and it make sense to club it with the visit to park . Be the early bird to catch crocodiles and alligators taking a sun bath before the vibration of motorboats rattle them back to river .Crocodiles will not disappoint you though . A paradise for bird lovers

We arrived in Dhaulpur wanting to get on a Chambal River Safari in the early morning. Got a auto rickshaw at 6:30 from town to the far side of the river for 200 rupees return. Auto driver didn't really speak English and neither did the guys down by the boat. We managed to understand that we were to come back at 9. This time the same auto driver brought a friend and it so happened that to two of them came on the boat too. Foreigners are charged 2000 rupees for 1 hour boat ride, 220 rupees each for entry to the Chambal Sanctuary and we were charged 130 rupees for having a camera. Through broken English our guide managed to tell us a bit about what we were seeing. We saw Gharials quite easily, Marsh Crocodiles, a tortoise, Egyptian Vulture, Osprey, Pied Kingfisher, Indian Spotted Owl and several other species like duck, plover, tern, heron and waders. They tried to return us to the boat jetty 20 minutes early, so we asked to continue but they went down the river in the other direction which goes under the main road bridge and from then on the water quality is not so good and people are dumping rubbish off the bridge etc. You can see why all the good things to see are in the other direction and I felt they just tried to waste time driving by showing us the locals doing their daily activities by the water on the other side until the time was up.
So, we paid 2,570 rupees for basically a 40 min boat ride. So happy to see all these species but I think you can easily save yourself and just take a walk along the river side yourself for 1 km and you will see the Gharials and crocs. Drive to the opposite side of the river from Dhaulpur and walk left once facing the river (south-west). Good luck!

Chambal is a unique river as it does not get water from melting of snow alike many rivers originating from Himalayas. It is not rivers of Southern India where rain occurs in major part of the year. The major catchment of chambal river is in semi-Arid part of India which receives less then 100 cm rainfall annually, yet it is a perennial river and it is not polluted like Yamuna. It has Gangetic dolphins, Gavialis crocodiles, otters and many aquatic birds. There are many places along with about 960 km long course of Chambal where you can watch some wildlife. Palighat is one of such areas close to Sawai Madhopur. You need to take Sheopur road from Sawai Madhopur to reach this place. Some private boat operators have created facility for boating which can give you close view of gavialis and crocodiles. The charges are a bit expensive but maintaining a boat and staff at a desolate place where there is not much tourist flow justifies the rate. To rule out disappointment one needs to ensure in advance that there boating facility is available on date of time of one's choosing. On shore and nearby areas you can find wheatears, thick-knee, pratincoles, etc. You can also cover Mansarowar Lake either on your way to Palighat or on your way back. If you decide to stay here then you can go upto Khandar fort and Gilai Lake too or may be with some effort cover all these places in same day! Dont forget to carry your provision. You wont find any good restaurant in this area.

An absolute highlight of four weeks in India, where our focus was entirely on wildlife. Alongside Velavedar NP in Gujarat, we'll treasure our expense in Chambal for many many years. Besides the crocodiles and gharial, which are abundant, and the plentiful and varied birdlife, we were delighted to get a good sighting of a jungle cat, but absolutely blown away by seeing three river dolphins. No guarantee of course of seeing these elusive creatures, but regardless I would recommend the Chambal to anyone wanting to have an experience of some of India's other animals (there's a lot more to it than tigers!!!)

hi amit here. we planning to visit chambal wild life safari from agra uttarpradesh side. do you have any idea about the lodges close to the sanctuary or rest houses?/ we plan to stay for 1 night

I definitely did not check as I stay in Gurgaon and it is less than an hour travel to that place but I doubt as there's something very nearby. I remember some reviewers indicating a hotel nearby but do not remember the name.
Unless you want to stay there itself you can choose options at Gurgaon (Sector 10 is nearest developed Sector) or Basai village as this sanctuary is very close to that place.
