We visited Usman Gani with our guide Hari Shankar. We had first visited another durry maker who was very touristy and not very helpful so Hari took us to Salawas Durry. We found a pattern we really liked but it was too big so it was agreed to make a similar one in the size we wanted. We only paid at this point for the shipping. It was agreed they would send a photo via Whats App when it was ready which they did. They then sent us their bank details for us to pay and when this was received they sent the rug parcelpost.

It is gorgeous and the communication via WhatsApp worked very well.

Must must must visit. Next time you are in jodhpur do take out time to visit this place in a KAKANI Bishnoi village . It's a different world altogether. Experience the art of dhurrie making and also don't forget to buy some amazing pieces to ramp up your place. They accept all modes of payment and also provide delivery. So do keep it in your bucket list.

I visited the Salawas Durry Udhyog. It was not planned. Usman bhai demonstrated the making of durries (carpets). I was overwhelmed by the Usman bhai attitude. It requires very hard work to make one durry.
The visit to Jodhpur is incomplete if Usman bhai shop's not visited.
Its a must visit place to buy handloom carpets or bedsheets.

Met Usman Gani here, (9799184786- Whatsapp, 9414132570- Mobile) Told us about the profession, how they have been doing it for the last 6 generations, the hardships and his continued commitment to the work. Was incredible seeing authentic local handicraft over here.

On the way back from Bishnoi village, we chanced on Salawas Durry Udhyog, which is situated right on the highway to Jodhpur, about 20 mks away. Out of curiosity, we went inside the establishment, which serves as both workshop and residence. We were welcomed warmly by Mr.Usman Ghani who showed us around. Once he realised that we were interested in the manufacturing process of Dhurries, he demonstrated the weaving of dhurries, strand by strand, using manual tools.
We got to talking about the business and he told us that his family has been in the dhurry making art for the last 5 generations. He and his family (comprising of 7 members) depend totally on the business. An average dhurry of about 8 X 3 feet takes about a month to weave and is sold to the larger emporia for about 7,000 to 10,000, which obviously sell it for double that price. He said that they do not get much assistance from the government (soft loans, subsidies and so on).
Though not experts on dhurries, we could see that they were of good quality. Add to it the dedication and effort of weaving, it warrants a visit and a purchase.

We visited during our Jeep safari near Jodphur. Originally not part of the tour but turned out to be the best moment. The artist was a pleasant, very hounest and genuin man who told us about the durrie (rug) handworks. Beautiful handwork unlike anything we had ever seen. True quality and passion of the maker. I could even try myself and he showed his beautiful products without any pressure to buy. For us it was the absolute highlight of the tour and we wish them the very best!
