Surya Gate is the second of four gates that you have to go through in the Golden Fort before you reach the palace. It is the most imposing and certainly the most photographed. That is why it also the spot where hawkers and musicians gather to make a living out of passing tourists.

Amazing feat that the people could achieve in building these forts. The gates were strategically built to thwart enemy attacks.

After entering the fort compound by Akhey Pole.. and crossing the market premises..one proceed to the main fort part through the Suraj Pole..a Royal entrance to the Royal Golden Fort..massive gateway..a pride feature of the Jaisalmer Fort..The royll sotne scripted architecture in typical Rajasthani pattern on yellow sandstone will amazes you..
Rajasthani crafts sold here by local people infront of the gates are a good buy for collectors..
The flying group of dove are a very good photographic subject from this gate..

As per the normal defense mechanism, a fort gate should not be visible from outside, but only from a difficult angle; and inside the fort, one gate cannot be seen from another gate, so as to confuse the attacker. This gate is no exception.

This is a huge and imposing gate that you enter Jaisalmer Fort. Like many forts which have a series of gates; this one happens to be one such gate. The corresponding gates are constructed in such a manner that the enemy has no idea of the following path once inside. The other gates are located at a sharp turn so that the advancing army can be detected and attacked with full force preventing them from entering the fort.

We were informed that the first sun rays over the city used to hit this very gate, and that is how this gate got its name.
