- skdel2016National Capital Territory of Delhi, India280 contributionsA very calm place to relaxThe hill is famous for The Dhauli Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda) as it is known was built by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha in 1972. Built on the site where the famous Kalinga War was fought, the Dhauli Stupa commemorates the mission of peace that the Kalinga War achieved. There are 5 points at hill one should visit- Shanti stupa, Shiva temple, Ashok stambha, River -said to be red with blood during Kalinga war and Tunnel. Last but not least Tigers sculpture and Elephant carvings on stone .Enjoy the nature and peace.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 December 2023
- Sunil Bali12 contributionsGood attractionGood attraction but very crowded. One has to walk a few hundred metres uphill to reach the Stupa. The Stupa is beautifully built and is imposing. I also made a stop at the Ashokan Edicts and spend quite some time there. Surprisingly, the Edicts don't attract that much crowd as seen at Dauli Stupa. The Ashokan Edicts are very well preserved, thanks to the efforts of Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) and covered in a structure with barred open windows which allow one to photograph the Edicts.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 February 2024

Dhauli is a 30-40 minutes drive from the city centre and it was one of the places we loved to hang out while we studied there. The temple here gives you a good view of the city and the greenery around it. If you've read about the story of the Kalinga war and how Emperor Ashoka had a change of heart after that, you should definitely visit and follow the footsteps of history here.

Nothing great but you get a good view from a hill. You can see many Buddha statues in various positions. For people with disability, you still need to walk a few steps and parking is little away from Stupa.

There are no boards anywhere explaining the significance of the place. So I don't even know if half the crowd knew or cared. Just lots of photo clicking groups everywhere. Beautiful views of the country side. There is also a temple which was good.

This is situated in a small hill. Supposed to have been built by Japan as a friendship gesture. Paid toilet is available here. Even a 50 seater bus can reach this place. Many souvenir shops are available in this area

Take time to read and understand the significance of this place. This place is where King Ashoka fought the war and was disillusioned by the blood that he saw flowing in the nearby river - The famous Kalinga war. Ashoka become a Buddhist here in abut 250 BC. There is now a stupa there.

Hello,
if we are reaching Dhauli in the evening how much time we need to plan at this site?
Written 22 January 2018
Minimum 1.5 hours will be required and preferably during day time so that you can look at the surroundings. The backside of Ashoka Rock Eddict is Daya river where the great Kalinga war was fought. And you can also see the same plus surrounding area from the Stupa as it is at some height.
