About
KIRKEE WAR CEMETERY was created to receive Second World War graves from the western and central parts of India where their permanent maintenance could not be assured. The cemetery contains 1,668 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War. There are also 629 First World War servicemen buried in the cemetery in unmarked graves in the grassed area between the Memorial and the Cross of Sacrifice, and who's names are recorded on the KIRKEE MEMORIAL. The KIRKEE MEMORIAL stands within the cemetery and commemorates more than 1,800 servicemen who died in India during the First World War, who are buried in civil and cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan where their graves can no longer be properly maintained. This total includes the names of 167 servicemen buried in Deolali Government Cemetery whose graves are currently being reinstated by the Commission, and 629 servicemen mentioned above whose remains were brought from Bombay (Sewri) Cemetery for re-interment here in 1962. On the same memorial are commemorated almost 200 East and West African servicemen who died in non-operational zones in India in the Second World War, and whose graves either cannot be located or are so situated that maintenance is not possible.

A spot of calm & lush greenery amidst the dense growth, people & traffic in the area, the cemetery is well maintained and reminds you of the sacrifices of the valiant soldiers of yesteryears.

This is an war cemetery from 2nd world war. Very old and also popular in Pune. The graves of our martryed soldiers are burried here. More than 100 of them are in total. The view also givesa goosebumos with a sad moment of their sacrifice for us.

An oasis of peace and serenity beside a busy main road. The graveyard is very well tended and the records available at the entrance for reference. It is open to the public and is free.

I was in Pune for three days and had plans to see a bit of the city of Chatrapati Shivaji and the Marathas. As chance would have it I had to leave it hurriedly for urgent work. I thought I will not be able to see even one place in it.
As it happened, on the way to the Airport I happened to see the Cemetery from my vehicle and I stopped for a few minutes.
What I saw was another beautifully done cemetery by the Commonwealth Graves Commission. I had earlier seen beautifully done cemeteries at Kohima, Imphal and Guwahati.
This cemetery commemorates more than 1,600 Commonwealth fallen soldiers and a tribute to them. I could take some photographs. I wish I had time to explore it better. Maybe next time.

Such a sombre setting, beautiful memorial remembering fallen solders during the second world war. Very well maintained and it should be as respect to those resting here.

I first came across a war cemetery during my travels in Singapore and was moved by what I saw. It was only later that I came to know that my home city of Pune also had a war cemetery. Dedicated to the memory of the British and Indian soldiers who were killed during the 2nd World War, this cemetery is located in the cantonment area of Kirkee.

Located on the banks of the Mula river, this cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth Graves Commission. The graves are well-maintained and so is the garden around it. The greenery gives a very peaceful aura to the place. There are numerous tombstones and engraved on the walls of the memorial here are the names of those who fell.

Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the significance of the place and pass by it without giving it a second look. Places such as this are a part of our heritage and similar efforts must be made in promoting it as a place to visit, as the efforts spent in its maintenance, which is quite good.
