I have stayed in Pune a couple of weeks before going on a tour with Rashid. He was able to show me a very human and caring side of this city and it's history. A lot of knowledge on the past and everyday life were shared that are now woven into my understanding of this city. You can ask Rashid anything and he will be able to give an answer that not just answers the question but will give you a deeper understanding of Pune, it's people and how it all comes together.

It was a lovely day exploring some of the sights of Pune. We started at the Sadguru Shri Jangli Maharaj Temple in Shivajinagar, and the incredible Pataleshwar Caves near by. Rashid talked about the history of the city, the deities, the battles, the volcanic rocks, the trees, the birds, the rivers, and so much more. We drove past the bazaar market along the Mutha River and stopped at Kasba Peth to check out the first settlement in Pune. We walked through narrow streets and greeted local families, mainly children, mothers and grandmothers. One of the families invited us to lunch and offered delicious deep-fried lentil snack (Moong Dal Mathri?). We visited a famous copper workshop, a local young designer, then stopped for a tea break. We then walked through busy streets of Kasba Peth and stopped at Ganpati Mandir Temple. We drove through Laxmi road which was very busy with shoppers, past the imposing walls of Shaniwar Wada, and finally reached our lunch meeting place: RamKrishnal. I had one of the most delicious Indian meals ever.

The walk starting at Jungli Maharaj Mandir and ending at Tulsi baug was really interesting. Jan has a great feel of the city and her longtime interaction with people we meet along the way makes the walk a rich experience.

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon - on foot through old Pune following Jan Ali! Jan's patent love of Pune and India plus her seemingly endless knowledge of the city and it's inhabitants, their culture and their history is delightful. I would recommend the Chalo walks very highly to foreign visitors and to Indians who would like to see their city in a new light. Thank you Jan.

We did the walk with Jan as a family and really enjoyed the different way to see Pune. Jan has a phenomenal knowledge of the Heritage and history of Pune and is passionate to share it. A excellent mix of finding normally unknown places as well as gaining more understanding of commonly visited places. We have lived 3 years in Pune and we learnt so many new things that will stay with us forever. Thanks Jan for your wonderful walk which we will always be happy to share with those that visit us.
