Very popular, highly crowded place around Pune for a monsoon visit.
Ideal for day visit with friends and family. Best time to visit is of course monsoon but always rushed with so many irresponsible and drunk riders/ drivers around here.
So unfortunately peak time is the one to be avoided

One more offbeat location for weekend trip is Hadshi. This is one best location for family outing. It is about 45km from pune city. It is located in Mulshi near kolvan village. Hadshi is famous for shri satya sai baba temple. This temple build on table land which is surrounded by beautiful mountains. Here you can enjoy flat table land covered with green lawn. There is statue museum near temple, kids enjoy that museum lot. Other points to visit in this trip are Tikona fort and pawana dam. In hadshi you will get one of most scenic view in Pune and to reach here you don't need to drive lot in traffic as well.

Tamhini ghat stretches from Pirangut to Sanaswadi. Aprox. distance from Pune to the end of ghat is 82 KM.The road from pune till paud village passes through dirty little settlements. Don't expect any good view till the end of Paud gaon. After this, the magic begins. The mighty Sahyadri range unfolds slowly. The view gets better and better. Caution! You need to turn blind eye to the dirt thrown by travellers, especially in monsoons, when the entire ghat is ornate with lovely waterfalls, the roads near the falls are full of plastic bags, stale food, thermocol plates, cups, glasses and wrappers. In monsoon plenty of drunk young people drive the ghat , dance half naked with beer bottles in their hands, roam around and pass comments. If you plan to drive your car, keep all tools handy. No repair shop in ghat section. the road from Adarwadi village- some 11 km before the end of ghat, gets extreme bad after monsoon. The entire ghat section road is repaired in patches every year and it deteriorates within 4-5 months.Mulshi lake is at the begining of ghat, and is very beautiful. Its the main source of water to the hydro electric project at BHIRA. Tata power company owns Mulshi lake and they have put compound around the lake. so you can touch the water at vary few places. the water has strong undercurrents and has plenty of reptiles in it so be cautious . Disha's is a food joint in mulshi village. the food is veg/ non veg and good but the surroundings are very dirty. the best place for food along the ghat is 'Quick bite' at dhokalwadi village 45 km from pune. its vegeterian, clean and service is good. It gets very crowded on sat/ sundays. it closes at around 7.30 in the evening. They have a resort at the back and its resonable, though not very exciting. the setting is good. 55 km from pune is Tamhini village. its a small place with Vinzai devi temple. Beware! Animal sacrifices are common in this temple and its disturbing sight. From Dongarwadi village onwards most glorious mountain ranges unfold. The ghat is good for a day's trip. but the road conditions are unpredictable. Most of the road is narrow and trucks and buses occupy entire width, so it might slow you down a bit, though the traffic is not very heavy. Its deserted at night so avoid night journey.

Mulshi dam is arround50 Km from Pune City and arround 30 Km from Hinjewadi. You can go Mulshi via Hinjewadi of from Chandani chowk.
As this attraction says Mulshi dam but real beauty of this place is tamhini Ghat for which you have to travel arround 20-25 Km more from Mulshi dam and you will see one of the best natuaral beauty which is called Tamhini ghat. This place is no less beautiful than western ghat in Monsson season. Best way to travel is via Bike.

Most people go up to mulshi and return back, few go just to enjoy the drive or monsoon rains.most pass it on the way to konkan or pune.So we took a short trip (team of 12) and planned to go beyond mulshi. We went to the point where the konkan plains are visible and the descend of the ghat starts.Huge mountain cliffs stared down the verdant green everywhere, when the rains started a number of waterfalls gushed down the mountains. we stopped at a number of places for short sojourns to simply enjoy the rains or enjoy nature. Its like no other place, much of the scenic places have become touristy where people jostle for space to exploit every view available. The single road that cuts through the sahyadri ranges, everywhere along the road you are deep within nature.Travelling in a group is preferable as there are drunken louts at some places (far lesser that the pathetic bhushi dam)
we stopped at a hotel "Saumili" run by Saurabh Raje. and i must say the food exceeded what one would expect in such a less travelled place.
Chicken tandoori - awesome
gavran chicken - we ordered extra curries!
Prawns - fresh from konkan, better that what most pune restaurants serve.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone going via Tamhini
It is near dongarwadi, around 1 hour from Mulshi.
Overall this less frequented place (tamhini) was a find for me.In monsoons you have to only see it to believe it.

Having read about Mulshi being a tourist spot we headed from Pune up to the lake and dam with high expectations, BUT
1 We reached the village below the foot of the dam wall ( obscured from view though) where the road forks to go left to Mulchi and right to Lonavala. Turning left we saw a guarded gate on the right side of the road. A sign saying no swimming, fishing, washing clothes etc greeted us at the gate. Still, we asked the guard if we could go in to take some photos. NO WAY
2 Ok, so we go up the road and see signs every km or so saying no entry to the lake- This land, dam and lake are owned by Tata Power company- entry prohibited!! The concrete wall embedded with shards of glass was a not too subtle message to keep out.
3 We drove on to Mulchi which is just another run down little township that does not inspire a stop.Very disappointing but with potential.
4 Paradise Cafe.Just before Mulchi a cafe caught my attention on the right hand side of the road where we stopped for lunch . This interesting restaurant is owned by a Sikh family and features much memoribilia , artefacts and sales items. While looking as though it needs a makeover, the views from the restaurant over the lake are commanding with nice bush setting. A 10 minute walk down to the lake would have been nice but the waiter told us it was not allowed. We made do with a beer and a good lunch which included an appetiser of Chicken Afghani- only the second restaurant where I had found this served in 7 months of living in Pune.
The only real negative of this place is that it needs better quality tables, chairs ,a splash of paint and it would be transformed.
To summarise an access road down to the lake at Mulchi would truly benefit this town . What is the point of building a magnificent house here ( which there seem to be plenty) up on the hillside
but with no lake access!! Okay its all owned by Tata (?) but they could do so much to enhance this area which does have some potential.
A great view of the lake can be obtained by taking the right fork to Lonavala and after a short steep climb of about 2km you can park your car on a small plateau and get the camera out.
Check my photos of the sign and the view from the Cafe

It is misleading information in reviews of trip advisor as well as other websites on Mulshi Dam.
You will go from Pune via Kothrud, Chandni Chowk, Bhugaon, Paud Mulshi Tamhini Ghat & further, the most funny thing is that you will be wondering:
1. Where is the road to Mulshi Dam
2. Where is Mulshi Dam
NB: While passing on the road from Pune to Mulshi or Tamhini Ghat, you won't be able to sight Mulshi dam but on return journey you will be able to sight it.
So readers please note that there is no road to Mulshi Dam for picnic purpose as Mulshi Dam is under the control of Tata Company who has built Hydroelectric Power Station there to supply electricity to Mumbai. Hence access to public is totally prohibited. Mulshi Dam is not at all a picnic spot like Khadakhwasla Dam or Panshet Dam.
On Mulshi / Tamhini Ghat route there are:
1. Resorts / Restaurants that has graded road access to the bank of the river
2. Graded roads leading to the bank of the river (to check with the locals)
The very first water fall named Malli Karjun water fall is at village called Palse.
There are two terminology used for Mulshi
1. Khalchi Mulshi (Khalchi - A Marathi word for bottom)
2. Varchi Mulshi (Varchi - A Marathi word for top)
Malli Karjun water fall is located at 3 km after Varchi Mulshi (Shivsagar Hotel) & 150 meter from Palse village. Water fall is adjacent to Atmantan resort.
100 meter before Shivsagar Hotel graded road is there that leads to the bank of the river.
A good Dhaba restaurant is there opposite to & few meters before Shivsagar Hotel.
What are the things you will find at Mallikarjun waterfall:
1. Atmantan resort (photo is attached in this review)
2. Hotel Chatai having lodging as well as very good restaurant facilities with toilets (photo is attached in this review)
3. Plenty of villagers are selling tea & corn under the wooden shades on road
4. Next to water fall there is a restaurant. It's construction is still going on (photo is attached in this review)
a) Change rooms (construction is going on)
b) Zip lining adventure (ready)
c) Walk on bridge ropeway (ready) INR 50
On right side of water fall there is route to go on the topside of the water fall.
From this water fall, Tamhini Ghat is at further 30 km.
The things that will captivate your eyes while crossing Tamhini Ghat are:
1. The picturesque river bank with alluring green nature paradise.
2. Deep valleys that will make you say wow
3. Alluring water falls
If you are trek lovers then following forts are located on Mulshi / Tamihini Ghat route:
1. Tikona (Very scenic fort of very easy trek)
a) Shri Satya Sai Baba Pratishan Temple is there at village called Hadshi.
Temple is excellent with green scenery all around
b) Ganpati temple, Hanuman temple at Hadshi village.
These temples too are excellent.
2. Tunggadh (Medium difficulty long trek)
3. Ghangadh (Very small easy trek)
4. Kailasgadh (Very high difficulty trek. It is on the other side of river bank)
Please don't visit during monsoon or rainy season as risk is very high on trek route.
From Kailasgadh you will see Mulshi Dam water reservoir.
The public launch (boat) service is there from near to Mulshi Dam to a village near Kailasgadh.
The Kailasgadh route is also very scenic.
Best time to visit Mulshi or Tamhini Ghat route are Monsoon & Winter.
The journey upto Mulshi mallikarjun water fall (Varchi Mulshi) is average without much scenic views but journey from Tamihini Ghat onwards has splendid scenic views.
Hope the information will help you to plan trip to Tamihini Ghat instead of Mulshi Dam.

Worth a drive- a large large lake ...a powerhouse ... went upto the lake where water gets pumped up at night for power production in daytime. Requires trekking to reach the smaller height lake. Good small treks around Mulshi ...example near garudmachi .

Mulshi Dam is a very good monsoon getaway from Pune for a day trip. One can drive along the long and curving road alongside the backwaters of the lake. A bit ahead is Tamhini ghat, which is also very scenic during the monsoon season. We went in June when the monsoon has just started so it was green all around. All through our trip it was raining. the scene was lovely as small waterfall have started flowing through the roadside ranges. With such a close proximity to Pune and abundant natural beauty, Mulshi is a very good getaway.

How is the road condition from Pune 2 Mulshi..I went in March this yr and it was terrible

Is there any access to public transport from mulshi to back in pune??
Written 16 May 2019
Many state transport buses plying between Kokan (Mahad, Goregaon, Mangaon, Roha etc.) and Pune go via Mulshi (Tamhini Ghat). SO plenty of public transport options available. In addition to that, 6-seater rickshaws can take you up to Chandani Chowk from where you can enter Pune City by auto rickshaw, PMPML bus etc.
Written 21 May 2019
Can this place be accessed by bus from Pune?
Written 28 August 2018
Yes. You beed to go to Swargate bus depot to catch bus for Mulshi or Pirangut.

I am planning to go in 27 jan with husband and 2 yrs old. what will be good time morning or evening to visit there. any suggestions like what to carry and what to specially see there.
Written 26 January 2018
I am unsure whether you went with your plan with your family. If plan has been postponed for any reason then here are few tips;
1. Mulshi dam is not at all a picnic spot.
2. Drive thru Tamhini ghat that stretches 33 km provides spectacular views.
3. Waterfall is there but unsure whether it will have water or not at this time. You need to carry extra set of clothes & towel if you are lucky to see waterfall which is at 150 meter distance from Village called Palse. Waterfall name is;
a) Palse water fall
b) Mallikarjun water fall
4. There are plenty of restaurants on route from Pune to Mulshi so nothing to worry on food matter.
Restaurants with excellent views of river bank are there.
If still want to know more pls read my detailed review on Mulshi Dam.

We are planning a family trip to Mulshi and Tamhini Ghat. Can you please tell us where exactly can we find waterfalls. Also is there a place where we can put up a tent and barbecue?
Written 4 July 2017
There are too many places where you can tent and barbecue.
You will get good place for tent and barbecue on top if you go up by taking bridge (single road) near mulshi dam.
you can find waterfalls between Mulshi and Tamhini.
