Aurangabad caves are located in the city of Aurangabad and are much smaller in number, size as well as popularity when compared to either Ellora or Ajanta caves. The caves are quiet easily accessible from Aurangabad city. The caves are cut from the rock on the face of the hill and are located at height. There is a flight of stairs from the base of the hill to the caves, which can be comfortably negotiated. The caves are being looked after by Archaeological Survey of India and the entrance to the caves is chargeable. The ticket counter is located, half way up the stairs. Visitors also should note that there are two routes by which caves can be accessed. The formal route reaches the base of the flight of stairs and the informal, partly mud road directly goes up to ticket counter. The caves are less frequented by the tourists. However, time permitting, they are worth a visit.

Many of the caves are closed. Good scenic view from top of the hill. Couldn't see any tourist, only girls & boys in pairs visible. Didn't go inside.

Although there are many options to visit both caves in price and convenience l thought l might highlight a very easy and cost effective way to visit both caves without all the confusion. Both caves are in different locations, Elora caves around 30kms (19 miles) from town and Ajunta around 100kms (68 miles) from town. Contrary to what is advertised in some brochures it is not possible to do both caves in one day. For us in our late 50's, the easiest and most cost effective way was to visit the Ajunta cave site was to simply head to the Aurangabad Central bus station a day before , any ricksaw driver knows where it is , walk in and go to the pre book office (the locals are only too kind to direct you) and book a ticket to Ajunta caves 690 rp per person return trip on a volvo airconditioned bus, it leaves at 8.30 am everyday except mondays arriving at 11am and leaves the caves at 2.30pm arriving back at the bus station at around 5. 3.5 hrs at Ajunta for was sufficient for us to see most of the caves especially the important caves 1,2 ,9,10,16,17 and 26. Just a note, currently there are alot of roadworks beng done on the Ajunta caves road and the trip is real bumpy. Elora caves we found more interesting especiall cave 16, we just hired a rickshaw driver from out front of Central bus station the day we pre booked our Ajunta tickets and for 800rp total to take us to Elora , he waited for as long as we liked and brought us back, certainly much cheaper than any tours. Dont forget to haggle a bit if you need to after all its India. The drive there in a rickshaw was surprisingly quick and comfortable. Just be aware there are entry fees at each site of 600rp per person. Hope this helps.
