Matengeshwar Temple is hard to miss when visiting the Western Group of temples at Khajuraho. The temple has a history of its own and an interesting one, ask your guide for details. A huge Shiva Linga, so huge that devotees climb up on it to worship, something that's not seen elsewhere. While it has its religious importance it nevertheless is a must visit anyways.

It is the earliest temple of western group of Khajuraho temples. This is the only temple where Shiva is worshipped. It is outside the boundary of western group of temples, near Lakshmana temple. It has separate entry. Sanctum has Shiva lingam. It is made of polished stone, roughly nine feet in height. This temple has windows on three sides. The temple faces east and has a porch.
A good number of steps have to be taken to reach it (around 30). Sculptures are very less in this temple. A fair is held on Shivratri festival here every year.

What A temple.
I saw the biggest ancient Shivling here.
Shivling jalahri is covering whole Garbh grah (Main temple premisis).
This is in western sector of Khajuraho temple chain.

Of all temples at Western group of temples at khajuraho , the Matangeshvara temple remains an active site of worship and doesn't need any ticket.
As you can see the attached picture, it has 8 feet height Lingam and as per Pujari Ji ,same height of half part is below the visible base.
There used to be an evening Aarti just below the temple which is best part.
Dont expect same level of architecture as other temples in western group of temple has.

There is a separate entrance just to the left of the ticket office for the western group that leads to this temple which is still used by worshipers. At night it is very colourfully lighted.

Only temple worshiped in Western Group pf Temples. One need to climb some steps to reach the temple. The temple has a huge Shiva linga and is worshiped even today. This temple is next to western group of temples. We could visited the temple around 9 in the morning and there was not much crowd. We could see the pooja and the arti in the temple. We can also go for the pradakshine of the Linga (which is half in shiva temples). The priest performed the arti and gave us prasadams.
The architecture and carvings in the temple is very beautiful and take a walk round the temple and enjoy fresh air and beautiful carvings.
There is an Huge peepal tree in front of the temple. People worship this tree for various purposes. Pooja items and flowers are sold near the temple. There is a small idol of Lord Ganesh in front of the temple.
Do visit this temple if you visit Khajuraho.

It is located just outside the Western group of temples in Khajuraho. The Matangeshwara temple is said to be built in 1100 AD. It has a huge lingam.
