We saw approx 10 temples in the western complex of Khajuraho and this one is the best. Full marks to the Archeological Survey of India (pre and post Independence) for the extensive restoration and maintenance of this great Indian treasure.

Takes a good 1-1.5 hours to see this temple and all the sculptures outside the temple, as well as around the platform. The temple holds you in awe and a lot of credit for that goes to our guide Dr. Anand Tiwari +919893151427 Many TA reviewers have written about him & we too were utterly delighted to have his company. We discussed so many sculptures, gods (and related mythology), architectural styles etc with him. Most intricate of details were highlighted by him and he didn't rush us even once as we took a lot of time seeing everything, asking a lot of questions.

My personal ranking for this temple is much above the larger Kandhariya Mahadev temple nearby.

Points to note:
1. One may need to remove shoes/ slippers inside.
2. You might need a neck support as most of the time you are craning your neck up to see the sculptures!
3. Carry a binocular to be able to vividly see the minutest details of the carvings.
4. We were stoked that our guide Mr. Tiwari was addressed as guruji (teacher) by other guides! My friend also discovered that he is the go to guide for a lot of the foreign embassies in India! So better to reserve in advance, than wait last moment, if not for full day then for this western complex at least.

This temple dedicated to Vaishnava worship is a sandhara temple of the panchayatan, (five shrined) variety and is the earliest and best preserved of the evolved temples with entrance-porch, mandapa, maha-mandapa with transepts, vestibule and sanctum with an ambulatory and three transepts. This is the only temple which preserves intact all the subsidiary shrines and the jagati (platform) with its mouldings and friezes. It still displays the largest number of the fine apsaras brackets, which form a notable feature of the interior decoration of the Khajuraho temples. The sanctum doorway is of seven sakhas (vertical panels), the central one being decorated with various incarnations of Vishnu. The lintel depicts Lakshmi at the center. The jangha (wall) of the sanctum proper is decorated with two rows of sculptures of which the upper one is carved with interesting scenes from the Krishna legend, including the subjugation of the serpent Kaliya, the elephant Kuvalayapida and the wrestlers Chanura and Sala and the Killing of Putana, etc. The sanctum enshrines a three-headed and four-armed image of Vishnu as Vaikuntha with a human central head and the side-heads of boar and lion. An inscribed slab, dated in A.D. 953-54 in the reign of Dhanga, which was originally excavated at the base of the temple, says that king Yasovarman died in circa 954, the temple appears to have been built between 930 and 950, which fits in well with its architectural and sculptural peculiarities. The Lakshmana Temple is the first structure you see when walking into the Western Side Temple site. Although it is more than 1,000 years old, it is in good condition and exhibits some of the best sculptures, including some very erotic ones. Each of the temples deserves plenty of time, especially if you're a keen photographer. It pays to go with a good guide and we were lucky to get our explanations from Anand Tiwari - highly recommended !

We visited Khajurao a couple of days ago and I was simply blown away by the beauty of the 1000 to 800 year stone temples.
This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is meticulously maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. The exterior and interior carvings are simply stunning and as beautiful as described in guide books. We had a very knowledgeable guide named Sanjay Khare. +919425143587.
I'd reccomend a stop over at this amazing place if you have time on an India trip.

I followed the suggested route and this was the first of the Khajuraho temples that contained the famous erotic sculptures. The temple is dedicated to the four head form of Lord Vishnu, Vaikuntha Chaturmurti. Which was a bit strange because the idol of Vishnu in the sanctum only had three heads.

This temple sits on an elevated platform as do all of the temples in the complex. The outer walls of the temple are richly decorated with the aforementioned sculptures, but also many dedicated to the subject of other Hindu gods including Vaikuntha Chaturmurti, Ganesh and scenes from Hindu myths. One of the best temples to see in the complex and one I recommend making time for.

This is another temple in this western group of Khajuraho temples. You must have a guide to make the most of this UNESCO site.
The outstanding and intricate sculptures depict everyday life. This is one of two temples where one section where the sculptures are erotic and it is said these were the inspiration for the Karma Sutra.
The temple is set in a pleasant parkland setting and near other temples.
If you are in Khajuraho you have probably come to see the temples. I recommend them.

Lakshmana Temple, Khajuraho. The Lakshmana Temple is a 10th-century Hindu Rajput temple built by Yashovarman located in Khajuraho, India. Dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu - an aspect of Vishnu. A great experience.

If you like erotic pictures this is the temple for you. There are lots of figures all around the temple performing various acts with sexual content. Other scenes show people in all sorts of everyday acitivities. You can enter the interior via rather steep stairs and walk around the main altar within. This is one of best temples in the area.

This is the second largest temple in the western group of Khajuraho temples. It has a series of superb carvings on it's walls, each more beautiful than the other. A sense of timelessness envelops you as look at smiling maidens and naughty lovers caught in stone a 1000 years ago. The detailing of their garments, pose and expressions is breathtaking. A place to soak in history and mythology.
