It is a great place with an ambiance matching the greatness of the Guru. He was a reformer par excellence. However, his messages are neither fully understood nor followed by many. Having said that there are facilities here to learn his works and their interpretations. Beyond that there are several lessons from each of his activity. The Mutt is a sprawling complex which would require several hours to cover and enjoy the tranquility every minute.

Our yoga teacher brought us here, as he studied and lived here for decades. It is a beautiful place with many trees, bearing fruit and we even saw bats, hanging upside down. The bathrooms are not good, very dirty, so I would advise to go elsewhere. Most of this was closed but it was still very busy, and we were able to walk around.

Great place for worship, meditate & rejuvenate your mind and soul..no doubt at all in this.Mahathma Gandhi's, Tagore's &Deshbandhu CF Andrew's word about Shivagiri &Guru will be worth reading before visiting this place. This is the place where novel, revolutionary, well forecasted preaching's like ONE CAST,ONE RELIGION,ONE GOD FOR MAN evolved.

After praying in the Mahasamadhi, I use to visit Guru's restroom which is very nearby(Where he had meetings with, Mahathma Gandhi, Tagore, CF Andrews, Acharya Vinobabhave etc) .Sitting here, with closed eyes(often filled with tears) gives me feeling which cannot be explained using any languages that I know.

One who visits Shivagiri can also visit Papanasham beach& one of the oldest temple in India -Janardhana Swamy temple in it's banks(just 4 km away), Anjengo fort(8 kms away, and you can reach Trivandrum city(where zoo, museum, padmanabhaswamy temple ,Aattuvakovil temple,Bheema Palli etc situates) in 35 mins by train.Ponmudi hill station is also just 70 kms away from Shivagiri.A wide range of Hotels(in all budget class) including Taj is offering excellent hospitality here. Local People are very friendly, and cooperative.Varkala Shivagiri railway station with stops for all major trains & bus services makes transport easy here. Please do visit here, you will have it's memory &feelings for life time.

Sivagiri is a pilgrimage centre in Varkala, India where one of its social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru's tomb is located and place where guru was enlightend and got the salvation. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days 30 December to 1 January.

The Sivagiri Mutt, built in 1904, is situated at the top of the Sivagiri hill near Varkala. Even decades after the guru breathed his last here in 1928; his samadhi continues to be thronged by thousands of devotees, donned in yellow attire, from different parts of Kerala and outside every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30 December to 1 January.

The Sivagiri Mutt is also the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, an organization of his disciples and saints, established by the Guru to propagate his concept of 'One Caste, One Religion, One God'. The Guru Deva Jayanti, the birthday of the Guru, and the samadhi day are celebrated in August and September respectively every year. Colourful processions, debates and seminars, public meetings, cultural shows, community feasts, group wedding and rituals mark the celebrations.

Shivagiri Mutt which is a highly popular ashram in South India is also situated here. The great social reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru established this ashram. Both the tomb and 'samadhi' of the founder can be found here and thus drags a lot of people to the place. It was in 1904 when the ashram was constructed and the spiritual Guru resided here until 1928. Today the premises of this site also serve as the headquarters for Sree Narayana Dharma Sangam. This ashram which is located top to the Shivagiri Hill is visited by the pilgrims mainly from December 30th to January 1st as the annual festival here is held during this time. The mutt is also popular as the local people organize various programs including cultural shows, seminars, community feasts, public meetings, debates etc. here. Even though the place is mainly visited by pilgrims, tourists from all around the world love to be here where such a great personality lived. Many people stay in Varkala beach hotels or any nearby resorts to attend the festivals here which may last for a few days

Sree Narayana Guru was voted by Keralites as the greatest son of the state in 2000 in the turn of the millenium. He was a social reformer and helped restored faith of people in the Hindu religion which was dogged by casteism and complex religious customs which alinenated average and especially lower caste Hindus. So if you are interested in Kerala's cultural history please visit this place. It is at distance from the cliff on a hill called Sivagiri. You can visit the logdings of the guru and the temple on top which offers a very unique and peaceful ambience.
