Varkala cliff - a must visit place in kerala
This was our first trip to Varkala and surprisingly it was a great trip. Although the North cliff area gets a bit busy, our visit to the south cliff area and the beach was amazing! The town is tourist friendly and offers a variety of restaurants. Breakfast at “Trip is life cafe” with the ocean background was just stunning! Varkala cliff trip is a must visit place in Kerala!!

    Varkala on 31st December
Cliff view is nice. It was a little too sunny on December 31st afternoon. The beaches are clean. It’s crowded though. Good to visit in morning or evening. Lot of street shopping options are there and restaurants have good ambiance. Looked perfect for swimming.

Walking towards the sunset atop a cliff!
From the car park, the street moves with shops on one side and the beach below the cliff on the other. Prices are moderate but one can always negotiate. Variety of cuisines - Italian, Indian, French, American and Tibet. Steps leads to the beach. Can spend about 2-3 hours walking, shopping and enjoying coffee, cold drinks and a choice of food.

The best cliff beach in the entire world. The sun rise view and Sunset view is the best. Access to the beach is adventurous. Everyone will like it.

Views are breathtaking from this narrow stretch of North cliff/ Varkala cliff. Street is full of cafes and other shops. Overall go there to experience the vibe and soak in views of the ocean. Sit in one of the cafes.

We returned after 9 years. Some elements are better - but still the authorities need to focus on litter and sanitation along the paths.
Shops all sell the same clothes and jewelry so there isn't a great deal of choice.
Some very good restaurants and we enjoyed most of our meals.
There are stray dogs all around which is a shame as they are lonely and need to be rescued and neutered.
The cliff will be spoiled if more people visit but the infrastructure doesn't keep up.
The beach views are lovely.

Varkala

It is disheartening to witness the profound changes in Varkala. Once a serene and peaceful holiday destination, it has unfortunately evolved into a noisy and overcrowded place, particularly during the festive season.

The transition from a tranquil atmosphere to one characterized by overwhelming crowds, excessive noise, and environmental degradation is evident. The negative impact of heightened tourism, especially during peak periods, is visible through the aftermath, with plastic and garbage now marring the once pristine surroundings. The disappointment is further exacerbated by the prevalence of overpriced accommodations.

New Year’s Eve proved to be a distressing experience, with fireworks commencing both before and after the designated date. The cacophony of very loud music from every restaurant, closely situated to each other, turned the atmosphere into noise rather than music.

The introduction of motorboats, jet skis, and other disruptive activities has added an unpleasant layer to the overall experience. The intrusion of these sounds extends beyond the beach, reaching areas like the helipad and restaurants. This makes it nearly impossible to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

There are concerns that Varkala might be on a trajectory like Goa, notorious for its commercialization and crowded beaches. This realization raises alarms for those who initially valued the tranquility that Varkala once offered.

Varkala cliff was extremely crowded in December. All of India seems to be heading here. Given the narrow aths this can be a claustrophobic experience

Too many tourists. Too much construction noise and overpriced stays and restaurants.
Varkala has lost it’s charm, unfortunately.
Was lovely in 2017.
