This was a dismal buliding that could be so much more. The tanks were terrrible and the fish looked (if fish can look) miserable; they were often listless and on their side looking as if they wished the world would end for them. There was some gravel and the odd rock in the tanks and not much else; no plants or anything that could offer them any kind of diversion from the tedium of their tanks. The signage was old and not current - for example, they had tanks with more than one type of fish, but only a description of a single fish. If you want to keep fish, visit other aquariums such as the one in London or Sydney - that's how you look after creatures of this world who are entitled to be looked after properly if we have to keep them in captivity.

A small and well maintained aquarium. They have a good collection of fish breeds. It is situated closer to the Edava beach.

Had low expectations, but on contrary we had beautiful display of various kind of fishes even the exotic ones. Well maintained and got awe struck by seeing puffer fish , jelly fish etc. Mark this aquarium a must visit during the Varkala trip.

Been to other aquariums i India... and set my expectations low. The Varkala Aquariums high is there jellyfish aquarium and their low is there obvious lack of watermovement in all aquariums and lack of maintenence. But overall not superbad and the aquarium could be fixed easily i think... And maybe they should focus on saltwater and asian/indian Freshwater fish and skip south american and afrikan cichlids... Just an idea! The fee 30 rp for adults could be higher if the quality was better.

It has many types of fishes at display. It’s run by the government. Good to visit for kids and family too. Entry ticket around RS 30.

The aquarium opens around 10 AM in the morning and is bit away from the papanasam beach but near the north cliff.

Clear modern tanks with - in the main - reasonably informative notices about a variety of fish, both from local waters and beyond. The spiral ramp is a clever use of space. The jellyfish display near the entrance is the pièce de résistance.

though varkala is in itself a "not so crowded" place unlike India, the number of species present in the aquarium and the information shared was a good experience.
Also, it was children friendly, good place to go if you are around.
