I came to Mathatitu at the end of January for a 200-hour YTTC and had an amazing time. For someone who literally walked from her couch to a yoga class and after a month was able to do a head stand, this should tell you something about the great teachers at this ashram. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was pleasant, and I had a great time. I would strongly suggest it to anyone.

What I learned at Mathatitu Yoga School went way beyond my expectations. It all asked hard work from our part too, but I’m amazed to see how many topics we could cover in one month, in such various areas as philosophy, ayurveda, anatomy, asanas, meditation and pranayama… One of the strengths of the program is that it’s delivered by a team of teachers with different approaches but that complement and feed off each other. The classes are definitely challenging but take place in a caring atmosphere, supervised by Anoop, a director with an inspiring life philosophy. I feel very grateful for being able to complete my 300h TTC there!

I am so happy that I choose to do my first yoga teacher 200hr TTC at Mathatitiu. It is wonderful yoga teacher training, the teachers are all amazing, the best yoga teacher I have had. Everyone are so kind and nice. The food is so good and the yoga shala is beautiful. The location is great. I really recommend Mathatitu. I can't wait to go there again for 300hr TTC.

It was awful. Lost 6 pounds in a week the food was so bad. No shower just a bucket to fill with water and pour over your head. Beach was not swim able doe to strong rip tide and stinging jelly fish. Yoga mats were disgustingly filthy they provided. High percentage of stray dogs have rabies do not visit without a vaccine. My friend was bitten by a dog on a beach walk another guest head butted by a cow. Cockroaches and red ants shared my room. We paid $800€ for a week of “yoga retreat” and arrived at a teacher training camp that was into week 3 far advanced from my ability. No morning mediation as our itinerary promised before we arrived it was a class based on specific posture each day for the future teachers. Teachers paid $1100.€ for a month so yes I was scammed. Do not recommend.

I did my Yoga TTC in Mathatitu and enjoyed everything about this place.
The teachers are incredible and so caring. They are passionate and so happy to share their knowledge and culture.
The location is beyond expectations as it's right above the most beautiful beach in Varkala. Perfect to cool down after Asana class.
The food is vegetarian and so tasty.
The staff is lovely and so is the manager Anoup!
I absolutely recommend this place if you wish to become a Yoga instructor!

I've been practicing yoga for about 6 years, and have never viewed any class as a bad experience. However, I went to a Hatha class at 0800 a week ago at Mathatitu, and our teacher was absolutely terrible. I almost walked out after the first few minutes, as he was blatantly abrasive, calling new students out for not understanding him. As well as this, he "adjusted" our postures through slapping our legs or using his feet to push students of the class further than was safe for their bodies. The alignments he forced students into were incorrect and painful. It's so sad and unfortunate that this was the first time a few of the other students in the class had ever practiced yoga. I wish I was able to remember he instructors name, as it is clear that he should not be permitted the opportunity to teach this beautiful practice anymore.

dear emily i think you are mistaken our center name. first of all we dont have a class at 8 am, we have a class starting at 8.30 am in the morning, and it is hatha flow and not exactly for the beginners and the teacher is well experienced and he never done anything like that in his class. So I am pretty sure, there was no such incident. Please purposefully do not create a bad name for us. Feel free to discuss about this matter with me. Thanks

It was when I was facing immense troubles that my uncle suggested me to do a mind empowerment training course with Yogacharya Anoopananda.I have to say that without this course, I might have looked at the little things of life with much worried anxiety and exaggerated myths. This course taught me how to tune my subconscious mind to achieve success and prosperity in life and to bring in the magic recipe of smile and patience to whatever task I took up which totally made a different person with clear aims in life.

Thanks a lot to Yogaacharya Anoopananda for his limitless help and support and I happily suggest this course to anyone who wish to achieve success in life.

I saw Yin Yoga and guided meditation advertised on the board outside the ashram which i was excited about as not many places in Varkala offer it. I was told it was an hour and a half class - a bit short for practice and meditation.

There were two other people in the class. The guy who ran the class (i dont feel like i can refer to him as a teacher) turned up 5 minutes late, didnt greet us or introduce himself.

He then 'guided' by barking abrupt instruction to us through a few asanas, while he was looking over the balcony or doing his own thing. His tone and manner made it the least relaxed yoga class I've ever done.

He didn't offer any alignment awareness, we were in asanas for irregular amounts of time and less than normal for Yin practice. He left the class for a while half way through and finished the class after 50 minutes (so 40 minutes early).

I've attended Yin yoga classes around Asia and Europe and am currently going through a teacher training course myself and if this had been my first experience i wouldnt go to a Yin Yoga class again.

This review is not about any courses that happen here, only my experience of the one 7pm Yin Yoga class. I didnt attend another class.

The main teacher is a known man of character in the community. I begin by sharing this tried and proven fact (personal experience) because for those of us who have spent time in India, not all business transactions can be as straightforward as one might hope. But you can be confident here. Also, the course is fully certified with Yoga Alliance.

This school is excellent, has a convenient location on the cliff, offers housing and meals (or not, if you prefer) and the views of the Arabian Sea from on high plus the coco palms and other trees make = super dreamy. = )

On the first place, I wanted to stay a few days in varkala. After I found this place, i stayed so longer than expected... Hannoop, the owner, is always ready to help you for anything and is someone you can trust.
I do not practice Yoga, but people I met in Mathatitu were really pleased by the Yoga lessons.
The little Hutts next to the ashram are wide, clean, perfect, especially for the price... One of the best memories of my trip.
