I had a nice long run past the Periyar house and Aranya Nivas, right upto the boat jetty. The diverse variety of huge trees was such a change from our city life that I felt so relaxed. I saw monkeys, deer and mountain squirrels enroute. After 2 laps and 10 km, I sat down and listened to the beautiful songs of birds.

    National park
Nice place for those who want to explore the true nature & wildlife. Tried the boating it was nice though but seats were limited and you can’t enjoy the view if you got the middle seats. We seen elephants, deers ,birds etc. So, if you are a true lover of nature & forests it will be a great place for you.

    Nice place
Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area located in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area encompasses 925 km2 (357 sq mi), of which 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982. Beautiful Forest Area and Lovely Hiking Trail
Our small group tour covered the two main attractions at the Periyar National Park: (1) Hike through the Periyar Wildlife Preserve with one of the Park Rangers guiding our tour group. Since there are "wild" animals in the Wildlife Preserve, all tourists visiting the area must be accompanied by one of the Park Rangers. Upon entering the Parks Ranger Station, everyone received a "loaner" knee-high protective "socks" to wear in your shoes. This is to provide some protection against possible encounters with leaches while walking through some of the dense vegetation along the trail. The scenery at the Periyar Wildlife Preserve is quite nice and we did see some wild animals and birds during our short hike, however, we did not see any elephants or tigers. The hike through the Periyar Wildlife Preserve is a worthwhile activity if you like to see a beautiful forest area and to see a few animals in the Preserve.

    No tigers, but who cares?
We went on a track to see animals, plants and tigers. We walked for five kilometres over two hours and saw bison, deer, black monkeys and many wonderful birds. Well worth the trek ( and we are both 70+ year-olds)

    Wonderful Park
Periyar National Park is a beautiful park located in the mountains of the Western Ghats in Kerala. The scenery is wonderful and there is a large variety of flora and fauna. We stayed in KTDC's Aranya Nivas inside the forest and took two safaris - Gavi Safari and the Boating. We booked both online. For Gavi Safari, which starts early in the morning, we needed to reach the parking area outside the forest. Fortunately, we had our own car; else it would be difficult to reach there if you are staying inside the forest. There are no arrangements from the forest department. The safari itself was good and breakfast was provided at the end. Arrangements for the boating were poor. Seats were provided at random and not on the basis of the date of booking. There is only one entry point for tourists for all four boats (there were four boats for the 3.30pm safari) which makes it chaotic. The landing point is infested with monkeys which can be pretty aggressive. The ride, as such, was good and the scenery great. We could see deer, gaurs and wild boars but very few elephants. We had also seen the black langurs, which are unique to this eco system, during our walk through the park. The park is defintely worth visiting but the forest department needs to improve the arrangements for the safaris

Really not worth the cost , for what was a walk, not a trek.
Have to pay for guided trip, on a well trodden path and boat ride.
Highly unlikely to see any animals, except a few birds in the distance.
Really would have been useful to have some binoculars.

Maybe staying in the reserve for a couple of nights would be better experience.

Periyar is unspoiled jungle, with tons of birds; we saw dozens of bird species, also giant squirrels, deer, monkeys (langur and macaque), and brief glimpses of elephants, gaur, wild boar, and a muntjac. The boat option is not too interesting, you see a few birds and that's about it. But walking through the jungle is tremendous. It is not too difficult, and you will be with a guide. We arranged our visit through Spice Village, where we were staying, and the head naturalist Maneesh came with us. He is extremely knowledgeable, and also quite unbelievable at spotting things. Highly recommended.

Periyar National Park is located in Thekkady. Can be reached by road from Kottayam/Munnar (3 hr drive respectively). We drove from Munnar and the road is very scenic, despite being a single carriageway. It's preferable to have own vehicle and stay outside the park (lot of options available) as there's no entry/exit possible after 5:30 pm.
There are a plethora of activities to do in the park, the 1.5 hr boat ride being the most popular. Rides start from 7:30 in morning and last one is at 3:30 pm. Sighting of 🐘, bisons, wild boar are very common during the ride.. but one has to be supremely lucky to sight a 🐅 (not sighted in last 2 years as per locals). But still the boat ride is absolutely scenic.
Adventurous types can go for treks, which are of many types, ranging from 1-2hours to couple of days. We did the 3 hour trek, wherein one goes inside the dense jungle, sees a wide variety of trees , plants, flowers butterflies and birds.. lucky ones can sight 🐘 or bisons too. The whole experience is awesome and highly recommended.
