The experience of travelling atop an elephant is fun. The short walk around the property with some facility for videos and stills is good. But the way it is done makes you feel bad. The elephant here, a quiet and calm one named Yamuna, is walking with the tourists throughout the day. Even her eating sessions get disturbed by the tourists trying to get photographs with the poor elephant. She looked overworked and tired. As I can hardly do anything in this I simply fed her with some fresh plantains after the ride.

During our recent visit to Thekkady in Kerala, the elephant junction was one of the highlights where e could interact with the gentle Meena and Meenakshi’s, who are lovingly tended to and looked after by their caretakers in the heart of the forests. Had a delightful ride into the jungle atop Meena. However the 20 minute ride costs 600 per person which personally I thought was a tad expensive. However the overall experience was very good specially for the kids.

We were a little nervous before going to Elephant Junction as we were concerned about the welfare of the animals.

All our fears were allayed as it was evident the elephants are well looked after and enjoy the interaction.

We did the ride, demo, feeding and washing.

You must wash the elephants to make the most of the trip but be prepared to get soaked! There are showers and changing rooms and they provide a towel.

We went to the spot expecting to see a queue of people waiting for elephant ride but we found only two foreigners apart from us waiting for the experience. We rode the youngest of the three elephants through the cardamom plantations adjacent to the sheds where they were housed. We got to feed the elephant and would have also gotten the opportunity to bathe them if we paid a little more cash. The elephants seen used to the attention of curious humans and seemed least bothered. The little ones were excited to see the majestic elephant that they have read so much about in their books. My mind harkened back to the old days where these majestic creatures roamed in these forests without restraint. What a sight it must have been to behold!
