Hailing from Kozhikode and pursuing 6 years of schooling at an institution next to this amazing church has made it the most visited religious spot for me. ‘Matri Dei’ is Latin words for ‘Mother of God’, and is popularly called as Mother of God cathedral or Devamatha palli in Kozhikode. The church projects itself as a fantastic construction indeed with mindblowing architecture. The church was recently renovated which brought some changes to its structure. Still it is a wonderful sight to watch. Also try to have a rear view from Deshabhimani press and also a long shot of the front can be viewed from the beach.

The Matri Dei Cathedral, is one of the oldest Catholic churches in India, probably, the 2nd or 3rd, after the Portuguese landed in 1498. But, sadly, this church is not getting its due importance, as compared to various other, much later built churches. This was built, just 15 years after Vasco da Gama landed on the shores of Calicut.
I have wonderful memories of the old, weather beaten, red painted building, with the blue, peeling enamel painted doors. A few years back, the church underwent an extensive renovation, which has done a lot of good to the otherwise, not so, well maintained structure. The new white exteriors, polished wooden doors, bamboo shades for the massive doors, etc are nice changes. One of the bad additions to the building is the tiled sunshades that were added to the windows, that has completely ruined the originality of the beautiful, minimalist design, which was so relevant to that period, and the resources available then. This has given it a Kerala feature, which is so common on most of the new houses, in the region, that try to copy the traditional architectural feature. True, it may help in protecting the shutters from the sun and rain, but, if they could survive for 500 years, with regular upkeep and if required, repairs and replacement, they will survive for another 500 or 1000 years.
I hope, when the church is due for its, next major renovation, those ugly additions will be removed.

It is situated very close to the Beach Road. However, our driver was clueless about this cathedral, as it is not on the list of many travellers. It has been maintained very well and the architecture is impressive.

There were very few people in the Cathedral and hence the inside hall seemed very gloomy and scary when I visited it in the evening. The floors were however very clean.

Located near the beach, the 'Matra Dei' or the 'Church of the Mother of God' is located within the campus of the St. Joseph School.

When we visited the place, last week, we had trouble finding it since most of the auto drivers did not know the English name of the Church.

Meanwhile, the Church, one of the oldest in the town is said to have been constructed in the late sixteenth century by the Portuguese with assistance from the Zamorin; it was renovated later in 1708 and then again in 2008.

The facade is imposing and the carvings on the door are worth noticing. From the inside, the alter is huge and has statues of Joseph, Mary and Jesus; there is another altar which was gifted by Goan community settled in Calicut. Then there is a painting of Mary with Jesus believed to be over 200 years old, besides which is a plaque in the memory of Rev. Father Pedro de Covilhany, the first missionary to arrival in Calicut in May 1498.

A cathedral in the real sense, this imposing structure is not yet on the tourist circuit. A must visit when in Kozhikode, the cathedral is a great place to spend some time in solitude.
