Visited this holy place with wife and was amazed to find a very peaceful place from inside. There was no one there to disturb us, not even a single staff!!!

We spent few minutes praying inside and reading the narration on each photo.

A walk down memory lane thru the prayer filled corridors of this beautiful church. A beautiful church now surrounded by development. Remember the church surrounded by rice and tapaoica fields .....

We visited Kottayam Cheriya Palli on 24th Oct . 2017 . Kottayam Cheriya Palli , i e St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church was built by Thekkumkoor Maharajah in 1579 . It got its name Cheriya Pally, as ‘small church’, because close by there is a Valiya Pally - big church . Interestingly , the Cheriya Pally is much larger than the Valiya Pally . The church exhibits a blend of Kerala and Portuguese styles of architecture .

Its European architectural style galleries, pillars, cornices and pediments make it an attractive building . The walls are over one meter thick and are strongly influenced by Hindu temple architecture . The niches in the walls accommodate hundreds of oil lamps. The walls depict the stunning murals in Oriental and Western styles on Biblical and non-Biblical themes .

The sculptures of St. Mary and the figures of angels carved in wood and made in stone are beautiful to behold . The bas-relief of the fauna and the flora is truly exquisite . On the southern side of church wall is a two-foot tall statue of Mother Mary . The baptism font is carved from a single stone .

Although this church is also quite new compared to some other churches in the state it is around 500 years old and well preserved. This church was built when Large scale migration of Christians from Kuruvilangad, Kaduthuruthi and Poonjar occurred in the 16th century. A mix of persian and indian styles is seen in the architecture with interesting murals.

Nice ambience around the place.
