The Niranam St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church is believed to be the fifth among the 7 and a half churches established by St. Thomas, the disciple of Jesus Christ. The old church which was established by St. Thomas in AD 52 was reconstructed and renovated several times and the present church is spacious and situated in a vast compound. There are five Altars in the new church and other attractions like the tall 13th century granite cross, Thomathu Kadavu where St. Thomas landed, inscriptions on stone, water wheel, the preserved palm leaves... there are many to see and study. It's a must see attraction for those who visit Kerala.

It was very interesting to learn from friends in Thiruvalla that St Thomas is accredited with starting seven churches, including this one. It is reported to have been started in 54 A.D. by St Thomas, and the current structure is the fourth. There is a traditional style Kerala house nearby where one of the Syrian Orthodox saints had lived. Inside you can see some papyrus like scriptures and other relics. It is worth the visit. One friend from the area told me that one hasn't visited this area until they've visited this church, it's a must see.

This church , due to its close proximity with parumala church (which is just a few km away) seems to be overshadowed by the fame of the parumala church which is in itself only about 150 years old.
This church however is almost 2000 years old(the first building) having been established in AD 54 by St thomas , the apostle of Jesus to India (who is buried at Santhome cathedral , chennai , tamilnadu) This church is also one of the 7 and half(not completed) churches founded by the apostle. The church also has a museum outside which displays many relics.

It is just a few 100 meters off the thiruvalla - parumala - mavelikara road I was surprised to see there was no crowd at all for a church of this importance !(i went on a saturday) Well many of the other seven churches also didnot have any crowd. I guess age is just a number :)

I went this church for my relative's baptism. I had get into the church and feel something happened to me. It was a very good atmosphere. The construction of this church is in a traditional way and it is very good too. This church situated west from the niranam junction. You can divert the road from the niranam junction while you are travelling from parumala to tiruvalla.
