Every day, at 12.00 noon, pigeons gather to feed.
They patiently wait on the rooftops.
At the resounding beat of the thali, they start circling the spire, going round n' round.
Signalled to stop, they descend in the courtyard.
The guardian then recites his prayers.
The grain is spread all around.
Time to feast.
Tourists in kOCHI, make it a point to reach on time. The sense of joy and contentment is mutual !!!

Extraordinary experience watching a huge flock of pigeons flying around the temple when the bell was rung. They then land, and everyone there can feed the birds if they want.

Janism is a separate religion and has a couple of thousand followers in Cochin. The temple was built in the 1960-ies.

We weren't too sure what we were getting into when we entered this temple. There was a sign clearly stating that menstruating women were not allowed in the temple. Men had to have their knees covered so my husband was given a wrap to wear like a wrap around type skirt.
The temple is in excellent shape but is not very big. They made a very big deal about having you and everyone there feed the pigeons after a prayer was said. It was very different from any other temple experience we have had. I'm not a super fan of pigeons so wasn't that thrilled on feeding them from my hands but it was still interesting.
There was no entrance fee but a tip box you walk past on your exit. It was great to see a temple being so well maintained.

The temple guide was in a hurry for visitors to quickly glance at the two areas on display and then ushered us out and on our way. There was no attempt to engage the visitor in the history of the temple. Dissappointing.

The place is awesome for pilgrimage purposes and it is also very close to the main market of the area which has many good fruits and other groceries.
You can also find pigeons there at a fixed time near 11 am when they come and eat food from your hands. It is a divine experience.

It is a beautiful old (1000+ years) Jain temple
You will love to see how pigeons take three rotation of main jain temple before coming to feed grains.
You can feed them by your own hands.
As this is a temple make sure you are not wearing short dresses

The temple is relatively smaller than average Jain temples but given the footfall it is not crowded and you can pray in peace.
