The Vasco da Gama Square is the best place to watch the sea and fishermen fishing using the Chinese fishing nets. We can sit by the side of the walkway if it's not crowded and enjoy the beauty of the canal, occasional ships passing by, boats, Chinese fishing nets etc and just relax. Weekends and holidays when it's not raining the place will be crowded with locals and foreign tourists and the number of food vendors will also be more. Food outlets giving fried fish and other items, ice cream & smoothies carts, snacks, tea & coffee etc are available there. There is space for kids activities too. Nice place to walk around enjoying the beauty of the sea and spend an evening with family.

We explored this area on our way to Chinese fishing nets. Strikingly beautiful, mature, large shade trees of hard to estimate age add greatly to the charming character of the square.

Good for a lazy afternoon walk. Stay upto the evening and watch a beautiful sunset. The area can be developed to a very nice and attractive Waterfront in the model of Waterfront in Cape Town.

A bit of a tourist trap but as it is where the Chinese fishing nets are I suppose it must be done. Interesting photo opportunities.

The Vasco DeGama House is located in the Old City of Fort Kochi. This is a very interesting home both outside as well as inside as it reflects the architecture of the early 1500’s exactly.
This famous Portuguese Explorer lived and died in this home once he discovered this part of Western India. His house is at the onset of the street and is well preserved.
When one walks by this impressive structure it is easy to image one walking down the same street with this famous world explorer!
While in the Old City of Fort Kochi I strongly suggest you stop by and make a visit to this very interesting house.

It is interesting to look at all the different merchants pedaling their wares from dehydrated ferns to hand sewing machines to fish mongers and ice cream and cold drink sellers.

Vasco De Gama is a large square surrounded by historical sites as well as the Chinese fishing nets and restaurants / shops galore. Not worth a special visit but if you are in Fort Kochi than have a stroll around and take it all in.

the place has a church, where there said to be a tomb for vasco da gama... apart from that you have a beach and chinese fishing nets. distant from the city, but can be visited for relaxing on the beach and to take pictures.

A walk along the seaside starting from Vascodagama square was a memorable one. Neatly maintained walk path, well lit. Nice benches to sit and relax. Beautiful view of the sea and ships. Small stalls and push carts selling fruits, icecream, souvenirs, kites, groundnuts.... Spent an hour with family. Nice place to spend an evening when you are in Fort Kochi or Mattancherry. Don't miss!!
