We attended an evening Kathakali show here. They do a great job of inviting you to view the makeup process, walking you through the intricacies of Kathakali dancing/acting, and then giving you a sample of a traditional Kathakali show. I recommend reading the God of Small Thing's chapter on Kathakali dance, then watching a show here for full appreciation.

We went to kathakali centre at munnar. Martial arts (kerala tradition type) program was really awesome, the artist performed beautiful awesome stunts. 1 hour program went of like few minutes. Kathakali artists also performed beautifully, Ppl took pics along with artists after the event. One need to book for the event lil early if tourists inflow is more.

This is a fantastic resource for artists and the general public. The ability to see medieval Indian story play every night with live musicians and technique demonstration is simply amazing. The performers are dedicated to their art and hold within them a vast amount of information and skill. Classes are also quite nice and you can start from zero or... More

They put their make-up on while on stage and it was alright but I wasn't all that impressed. After that when their show starts one comes on stage and they say he is going to show some of the facial and eye expressions that will be made during the show so we can understand what is going on. I looked... More

Very interesting to see an traditional Indian dance performance. You can come 1h before the play starts to see how the make up is done (I think about 15min before the play starts is enough if you don't have a passion for makeup). The play is in total about 1h plus an introduction where the dance is explained. Even if... More

Kathekali is a very inaccessible art form for newbies. Eye movements, hand movements, protracted dances, convoluted stories. But if you are interested in a very old art form, this is the place to come. Watching the players make up for an hour in a slow relaxed style is a great start. Just relax. It's comfortable and slow. You get to... More

ENJOYMENT FACTOR: Fantastic! I had previously gone to a newer, more modern venue and had enjoyed it, but this experience was even better. The location is a bit run down but fine. What really stands out is the way they explain the performance, eye movements, hands, and music is excellent. HOW TO BOOK: You can reserve your tickets online, but... More
