Six of us - three family couples - just had three wonderful nights gently cruising the Keralan backwaters. Three nights was perfect as we were able to travel a long way from the congested backwaters serving the day or overnight boats. The sunsets & sunrises were spectacular & the days were tranquil as we chugged along catching glimpses of the local communities along the riverbanks.
The boat was clean, comfortable & fully air conditioned throughout. The cabins were well appointed with excellent showers & comfortable beds & the outdoor space offered both shade & sunny spots with comfortable seats & a lie out area.
The crew looked after us very well, pointing out the masses of birds & vegetation as we cruised. Our chef was superb & cooked us amazing breakfasts with home made smoothies, pancakes, eggs etc as well as delicious lunches & dinners with a wide variety of Keralan dishes including lots of fresh locally caught fish, fresh fruit & vegetables & chicken.
We took our own wine & beer on board which the crew happily stored in a giant cool box as well as supplying us with ice.
It’s definitely an experience not to be missed & a welcome moment of peace & quiet in a busy Indian tour.

We had 2 days and 2 nights on the houseboat, which could take 2 couples. In our case it was just ourselves, with a crew of 3, who looked after us beautifully. You travel at a slow speed so get to see the amazing views, great bird life and lots of human activity . The whole area is quite unique and this trip allows you to unwind totally. I would definetly recommend a 2 day trip as it allows you to get into the quiter areas.

A trip in the backwaters of Kerala was the first must see/do on our 15 day tour of India. We were booked to have a house boat overnight. The initial meet and greet with paperwork completion was smooth and enough time to buy some wine to enjoy on our trip. A small motor boat arrived to take us and our luggage to our rice boat. We were greeted by Titus, Peter and Jaykumar, our crew for our experience.
The boat was clean and spacious with lovely cosy furniture and an area for sunbathing and relaxing. We set off on our journey among the many waterways of the backwater. Peter was the main steerer and would give any information required about the country life along the river. It was spectacular and peaceful. Titus and Jaykumar saw to our every need and comfort. The meals were beautifully laid out and delicious there was more than ample for two. We stopped part way to get an Ayurvedic massage from a small clinic. it was the best foot, leg and arms massage I had ever had. Whilst there we bought some fish from the shop next door. The crew cooked this up for our dinner that night. We also stopped at a small village with shops to purchase some products and also tried some local Todi (interesting). The boat was moored overnight with a group of other boats. At night you could hear the odd small boat heading out to fish. The next morning it was amazing to sit out on the deck with a cup of tea just listening to the river gradually coming alive and the mist hovering on the face of the water. Wow I could have stayed on the boat for a full week, just that one night had recharged us ready for the manic itinerary that was to come.
This experience was nothing short of perfect and peaceful and it was made a lifetime experience by the excellent services of Titus, Peter and Jaykumar. When we return we will definitely want the same crew. Thank you gents and Lakes and Lagoons for a memorable experience.
I recommend at least an overnight on a rice boat with Lakes and Lagoons, you will be rejuvenated. Bring a book or some relaxing music.

We took the Deluxe boathouse and set out from Pallathuruthy. Having heard a lot about mosquito issues, and that the air conditioner cannot be used after a certain, we went mentally prepared while full of anxiety. On the contrary, we faced no issues at all. Our boat had two rooms - one for us and another for the attendants. The room had its own attached bathroom. We had brought our own toiletries. Towels are provided. The room was properly furnished like a decent hotel room. There was a nice lounge and dining area too. The attendants cooked delicious meals to our dietary specifications, pointed out the various interesting sights throughout the cruise. We stopped at Chempakulam village for sightseeing, which included a church built in 427 AD and woodcarving exhibits. We docked at a point about an hour away from the point of embarkation (also disembarkation) for the evening to watch sunset, have dinner and rest. Overall a really delightful experience. We would do this again.

We were so looking forward to this trip after reading all the wonderful reviews and it exceeded all our expectations. The houseboat was beautiful and so immaculately clean. Our lovely crew of Vincent, Matthew and Kevin did everything to make it the most relaxing day and evening possible. To just sit back and watch the world glide by is heavenly. They cooked a delicious lunch for us of amazing prawns, fish, chicken, vegetable curry so much for for 2 people! but both my husband and I were not feeling 100% and failed to eat most of it which we were very embarrassed by. Instead of worrying they made something specific for our evening meal to help us feel better. Very beautiful simple fish and some rice soup with a simple curd to enhance the flavours and delicious poppadoms. They really did go above and beyond and we woke after a very good nights sleep in the gorgeous cabin feeling much better to a tasty breakfast of omelette, scrambled eggs, roti and honey. We cannot recommend this trip enough make sure you book!!

Lakes and lagoons is a fantastic company. I spent many hours researching different houseboats in a Alleppey after finding lots of groups that had fairly negative reviews and badly maintained boats. Therefore we felt really lucky to have our experience with legs and lagoons the boats were fantastic really well-maintained and had brand new thatching on the out side really top notch experience. The staff on the boat were fantastic and the food was excellent. We could not recommend this company more highly. Thank you.

Really beautiful views, lovely staff that were very professional and kind. We were served delicious food with our spice limitations in mind (we’re from Canada, but we love Indian spice but not too hot!). We took the “luxury” option that had a simple boat with a fan and A/C in the room at night when we moored and the boat was plugged in to electricity. We did go during the beginning of summer so while the boy wasn’t moving, it was quite hot - just keep that in mind! We were three ladies and felt safe with the staff. However, the only thing I would recommend is really insisting on smaller portion sizes if you’re a small eater! We had trouble finishing our meals and despite mentioning this to staff, we still had large portions of food. The rest of the trip was great! Just have regular boat expectations in mind when travelling and you’ll have a great time :).

This was the perfect way for us to end our 3 week trip to India. We spent 2 nights on our own 2 bedroom rice boat (my wife and I in one and our friend in the other). The boat was very roomy as were the bedrooms. There was a spacious interior dining area with large windows and a 2nd floor which was open and ideal for lounging. The boat itself was quite beautiful as was the river. And the food was exceptional as was the 3 person staff. One afternoon we did a walk through a town for a little shopping and then later we went on 2 hour canoe ride. I would suggest 2 nights as doing only 1 night would really not be adequate.

We had a lovely time on our boat with the two Matthews and Shaji, who went out of their way to make us feel at home. The food especially was a highlight, especially after we informed them they didn‘t need to tone it down for our European palettes. The drivers were great at telling us the story of the backwaters and were very knowledgable, stopping at the great church at Champakulam and mooring for the night at the charming village of Pullangady.
The boat itself had seen better days and was somewhat jaded, but this didn‘t detract from the overall experience and hospitality afforded to us by the crew,

Priya from Lakes and Lagoons made booking and payment online for our Premium Houseboat very easy. Her email replies were prompt, clear and very helpful. We spent a day and a night on a typically Keralan houseboat exploring the backwaters of Alleppey. They're modelled on the traditional rice barges, but fitted out for a comfortable stay. We had a really spacious houseboat to ourselves (aircon in bedroom) with a crew of three men. The food which included lots of fish and seafood was superb! Beautiful weather all day and a lightning display in the distance at night followed by a full moon. My fear of mosquitoes being an issue never materialised. It couldn’t have been better. Quiet time of year and the pandemic was around the corner, so we rarely saw other houseboats out cruising. I believe in high season the backwaters are extremely crowded which I feel would detract from the experience.

We had a two bedroom premium boat. Both bedrooms had own bathrooms

As the back waters are so extensive please advise as to which location you would recommed.
Thanks. Geoff

Are the premium
Boats worth the upgrade. The price is nearly double that of deluxe over Xmas but it’s a special occasion and so I don’t mind paying as long as the boat looks good. Thoughts?

Planning a trip in Kerala first week of November 2019. We are a couple from the US, would like to know how much would an overnight houseboat trip cost us. Do you also plan trips to Munnar and Thekkady. We are looking to spend ten days in Kerala.

Our houseboat was around NZ$400. We felt this was a little high. But go for high end boat to ensure you get AC and a clean boat. We had a giant cockroach in the bathroom. our bathroom was not the cleanest. Houseboat was a very good experience. I had a mosquito bite and my eye swelled up, so I did no enjoy the houseboat as much

Where can I get any idea about the prices?

Hi can anyone tell me how much beer and wine costs from the reception before boarding the house boat. Or are you better buying elsewhere
Thank you
Written 11 January 2019
I think you are better off buying before. We had a driver who helped organise this for us.

How can I make reservation for one night house boat cruize? We would board around 1pm, and leave the boat around 1pm next day. We are looking for a well maintained boat with two rooms with A/C, but not bigger then that, because we want to see remote parts of backwaters. We would also like a canoe ride during the trip.

e night with Lakes and Lagoons which was more tthan enough we did not get off so you will probably have to organise your kayak elsewhere
