The St. Aloysius Chapel is a Christian church built by Jesuit Missionaries in 1880s. In keeping with the Jesuit tradition, adjacent to the chapel is the St. Aloysius College.

The interior of the chapel is richly decorated frescoes that cover virtually all the walls. On the ceilings are frescoes of St Aloysius and apostles, while the walls mainly feature scenes from the life of Jesus. The frescoes are simply magnificent.

The chapel is located at the top of Lighthouse Hill, but seeing those frescoes is worth the climb.

With lot of excitement I landed at this Chapel on 24 Dec 2014, owing to some great reviews at Trip advisor and locals alike. You need to park outside and walk in to the chapel.
There is a board outside the chapel which reads that we need to remove footwear as it's a sacred place. But this rule is only for INDIANS, as I saw all foreigners are allowed to walk in with their footwear. When I demanded an explanation for this discrimination I was asked to shut up and not argue as it's the rule by the church. Given this I decided not to remove my footwears and thus I did not enter the premises, as I strongly believe such an archaic rules cannot be made by church authority. If anybody knows whom can I raise this do let me know. I just could not believe that in my country where I pay 30% tax I was treated like a second grade citizen.

I strongly recommend if you(Indian)intend to visit do wear some slippers so that it can be removed easily. Foreigners need not worry.

The Chapel is situated in the heart of the city on the Lighthouse Hill, Mangalore, Karnataka. This chapel unique compared to the other chapels in the country is the beautiful paintings that cover virtually every inch of the walls. Bro. Moscheni from Italy is the creator of this master piece., I strongly recommend this place, art lovers must visit it once.

As others have said this is an amazing Chapel with its intricate paintings covering virtually every surface. The local priest who gave us the information explained in great detail how Brother Moscheni came out from Italy and devoted his time to creating the beautiful paintings over a period of two years. You can take photos inside or buy the little pamphlet they sell with a selection of the paintings.

he St. Aloysius Chapel in Mangalore was built by Jesuit Missionaries in 1880 and its interiors painted by the Italian Jesuit Antonio Moscheni in 1899, during the Mangalore Mission in 1878. The Italian Jesuits played an important role in education, health, and social welfare of the Mangalorean Catholic community and built the St. Aloysius College in 1880 St Aloysius Chapel in 1884, and many other institutions and churches.
St. Aloysius College Chapel is an architectural marvel that could stand comparison with the chapels of Rome. What makes this chapel unique compared to the other chapels in the country is the beautiful paintings that cover virtually every inch of the walls. Bro. Moscheni from Italy is the creator of this master piece. One portion of the chapel paintings depicts the life of Aloysius Gonzaga to whom Aloysius College and chapel are dedicated. Saint Aloysius gave his life in the service of others.

The paintings of this chapel is preserved by a recognised board of the nation which maintains and restores all historic artifacts.

Do visit this place if you are in Mangalore. Inner walls are covered with paintings based on life of Jesus. The pillars which looks like marble stone are also actually paintings! The curator was very helpful and explained the story behind the place.

The fact that an artist from Italy had spent 2.5 years to complete the paintings, alone, deserved our appreciation.

The St Aloysius Chapel in Mangalore is situated in the heart of the city and was built by the Italian Jesuit Antonio Moscheni. It has beautiful paintings inside covering all the interior walls (fresco painting) and roof (canvas painting). Bro. Moscheni from Italy alone painted everywhere to create a masterpiece . One portion of the chapel paintings depicts the life of Aloysius Gonzaga to whom Aloysius College and chapel are dedicated.

A must visit place for Art and historic places lovers. One more good thing we noticed that the staff people were really enthusiastic and generous in explaining the history about the chapel to each visitor group. No entry fee.
