Do not miss thiss place if you are going to chikmagalur… its 60 kms from chikmagalur takes one hour to reach here. You gotta hike for a km or more. Not recommended in rainy season as it’s risky and also you might find lot of leaches. Best time to visit is from end of October. The view from the view point is amazing and worth the time taken to get there.

Sept 2018 • Family
We visited Z point on 30th September 2018. Me , My wife and 2 kids (aged 7 & 4).
It was a great experience trekking along the side of hills , it was steep few places.
Being a sunny day our trek was good. The trail may be slippery if it rains and there is absolutely no shelters (trees) in case of rain.
From chickmagalur town (Azaad park) , travel towards Bhatravati and take a left at 44th kilometer (Indian oil petrol station) for Kemannagundi road.
Drive few kilometers and take left at T road junction.
Drive further without any deviation you see a check post (Hebbe falls jeep safari starting point).
Take a left there and drive further to see Z point and Shanti falls board (small board) at a U turning (This is Z point jeep safari starting point).
If you drive further, you can reach Rajbhavan and a view point (i took the photo from the view point to explain our trekking experience).
It is optional to take a jeep safari or walk (i do not recommend walk, since the road is muddy, bad and jeeps pass at high speed). They charge INR900/- for a jeep.
Jeeps will stop just before shanti falls, which is about 10 minutes ride and trekking trail starts.
In my understanding there are 3 trails available (see attached photo). I named them as Trail-1 which is immediately next to shanti falls and looks very steep.
Trail-2 is after a short walk on your right side. Trail-3 is to walk straight.
We took Trail-3 and took 45 minutes to reach the peak. We could see people standing on top of Trail-2.
As per google, Trail-3 is shown as Z point peak.
It may take 2 hours to complete entire trek, but jeep drivers will give 1 hour time , so that they can demand extra money for extra hours.
It is up to your negotiation skill to handle the situation.
To enjoy greenery, travel in winter or rainy season. In summer you may not see mesmerizing green carpet.
Please dont post any query . I may not reply immediately. Thanks for understanding.

Once you enter the Rose Garden checkpost on the climb up towards RajBhavan there is a Hairpin bend where you can see the board that points towards Z-Point, beware the direction indicator is not there. Check with locals. We can use our own vehicle to get till Shankar falls. Don't fall prey for those jeep drivers, as they will try and convince by saying our mini cars/sedan's is not a suitable choice. Once @ shankar falls, park your vehicle and your trek starts. Walk along the trail, don't deviate and you will reach Z-Point in like an hour or so. Carry bottles filled with water or you can refill @ shankar falls. During Rain season you might find leaches. Please wear comfortable foot wears and clothing, it could also get windy and really cold. You will not find any food up there - please carry something to eat, do not litter.

It's a good place to go trekking.. To a certain distance the car can be taken but beyond that we need to go on foot. Advisable not to take toddlers as the road gets narrower, rocky and it's quiet risky.
I feel the security guard at the entrance should give clearer instructions about the place.
Please carry some snacks/ food to this place as there is nothing around..
The restaurant that is there does not seem to function.
Overall this place can be skipped if the trip is time bound

I had a weekend and a bucket list to tick off.
I wanted to pitch my tent amidst nowhere. I wanted to lose myself in rolling green hills. I wanted to make random friends. I wanted to share happiness. I wanted to get my travel juices flowing. And I chose Krishna Raja Hills (KR Hills) do all of that.
And I wasn't disappointed.
I will go the necessities straightaway.
Travelling to Z-point.
Take a bus from Bangalore to Chikmagalur. From Chikmagalur take a bus to Tarikere. From Tarikere you have to take a bus to Lingadahalli. And from Lingadahalli you get the bus to Kemmanagundi. The Lingadahalli to Kemmangundi buses (and vice versa) don't run after
4 pm. So plan accordingingly
That's how I travelled which is the longer route.
You can take a train from Bangalore to Tarikere and then the rest is the same.
You can also take a train to Birur(I would recommend this) and then the same. This route is probably the shortest.
There is a scenic long route from Chikmagaluru to Kemmangundi through Attigunde (Baba Budangiri). If you are driving your own vehicle you can take this route.
Things to do in Kemmanagundi:
Apart from the Z-point, there are a few scenic spots nearby. You can take a lazy evening walk and cover these view points. There is the Department of Horticulture, There is the Raj Bhavan. There is a small (nice things come in small packages) waterfalls on the way to Z-point.
Place to put up:
You can pitch your camp at Z-point. If you aren't a nomad like me, there is the Horticulture Department Guest House. You can put up there. There is an eatery run by the department. You get basic food there. The service is a little slow.
Things to carry:
Like always a nice pair of shoes. Chappals aren't really advisable.
Bottled water.
An extra pair of clothes if you are planning to take a dip in the waterfalls.
A cap, a waterproof and that is about it (It is advisable to visit KR Hills in or around monsoon to get the breathtaking view of the rolling green hills).
No permission required to visit any of the places I mentioned in the review.
An ardent request from an avid traveller:
Try to enjoy the sounds of nature while you are amidst nature. Hooliganism, shouting at each other, unnecessary tomfoolery can wait. It's not welcome.
Don't litter. Let us pledge to keep these beautiful places just as they are for generations after us. If you are having something from a packet and it gets over don't throw away the packet just anywhere. Keep it in your pocket. Throw it later when you see a dustbin. Try it. It isn't that hard. But the aftermath is exemplary.

We have visited this place on 23rd July 2017 as couple. This(Monsoon) is the best time to visit this place, we paid 600INR per jeep for up and down 1.5km for one way normal road. they drop near to Shanthi falls (it is very small falls, but in July the water is enough to bath). There are two routes to reach the point, one is like walk path another one is the first 200mtrs like trek and post that it will join the first route, but in the second route we can enjoy the view and take some additional good photos. We can take the path 2 which is on right side while going and return we can take the left side path. It is very easy; the distance will be 1 to 1.5km trek. Don’t forget to take the jeep driver number while they drop you, because you have to call them once you reach. The place is simply superb we can enjoy the full green path. We will have some good memories. We can even take children all so if they are ready to walk and we are ready to care them. We have to pay entry fee of 100INR at the check post to the government.

Access is from a city called Bellur, which is on between Tarikere and Chikmaglur. There is IOC gas station, and you need to take right here.
Once you drive up, there is board which directs to few attractions, mainly Z point, stone garden, waterfall. There is no parking as such, so park as much out of the way as possible.
it's more of walk in the begining than hike, but as you go, it gets narrower. there is not much elevation gain to speak of, so stop and enjoy the greenery, it is simply beautiful.
One guidance to all is, don't create short cuts on the trail and walk on the established path. Creating short cuts results in erosion and water run offs during rainy season.
Hike takes about 30 - 40 min one way depending on how many stops you take to admire.
Once back, drive further up, it ends up in a nice park, it's a good place to have some snacks. there are monkeys who are used to humans and are aggressive so beware.

Visited the Z Point for trek this Sunday morning 8th Aug. It was a light drizzle, the water falls were in full force. The trek was nothing by amazing experience for me , my husband and our 2 young boys.
Do's
-Trek takes 2 hours at a medium pace so take your time
- Wear boots, high socks (lots of leeches), full lenght pants and pull socks over the base of the pant so leaches cant get to your skin. Tuck your shirt into the pant to prevent leeches from entering the body. rub your body with Castor oil , it may help
-Take water with you
-Take a strong trekking stick for balance
Dont
- Dont wear chapals, heels, non grip shoes
- Dont stop at any point that is when the leeches stick to your body
Complete the trek and enjoy it. Its a really beautiful part of Karnatak

One need to walk about 4 km from the vehicle parking area to reach the z-point peak. There is a road for about 2 Kms which is in bad condition.Advise to take 4wd though cars will go till some distance during rainy season.Untill the start point of walking trail, one can hire Jeep or can walk from parking area.If the sunshine is bright one maynot find much leeches on the way.You will need to cross the small waterfall (Shanthi water fall).Once you reach the peak the view is awesome. Some places wind will blow heavily, so need to be careful. One of the best place to visit in kemmannugundi and chikkamagalur.

Very windy place as it is situated in a groove between mountains. Swami vivekananda's portrait on a huge lithe signifies the spiritual aspect of Nilagiri mountains. Stay here for 30 minutes or so before proceeding to Jerry falls. Carry a sweater as its cold even in April-May in the mornings. But its pleasant.

Hey Travellers,
I am koushik, I and my friends are planning to visit Kemmannugudi this weekend. Since you were the recent visitor to this place wanted to know few information,
1) How is the weather out there, is it hot or cold with fog seen at early morning?
2) Where to start the trek for Z-point?
3) How far is the trek?
4) What are the other places to visit nearby?
5) Options for stay near Z-Point.
6) Do we need to get prior permission to trek ?
Appreciate your inputs.
Thanks,

you can travel on the road from Dharwad to kemmangundi(where z point is) or you could take a train from Hubli(the nearest railway station to Dharwad) and travel to either Bidur or Tarikere and then go to kemmangundi from there by road

What would be the best time for trekking z point. Is it in the morning or the evening? Are there any time restrictions??
Written 6 October 2017
it depends, if you are going on foggy day start around 11am, sunny day go around 8am

we have hired a minibus from our locality, can it be used to reach the starting trail of the zpoint trek? and what and all are
the other places near to. zpoint that can be accessed by mini bus
Written 30 August 2017
you can go to the starting point, but have to hire Jeep for 1.5 to 2km or you can walk and go.
Written 31 August 2017
How much trek is there from the drop point? Is there parking available at the drop point?
Written 22 July 2017
Parking is there but not dedicated parking.. It's just the end point till where the vehicles can reach. After that you have to start walking/trekking.
It takes 45 mins to 1 hour for a beginner. If you are used to trekking it takes 30 mins.
If you are an expert driver/rider take the vehicle, else go in jeep.. Make sure you ask for return journey as well...
If it is your vehicle, taking a turn for the return journey might be tough since the road is small... For us it was bikes, we managed as we have enough experience...
Make sure you return immediately after the sunset and before it gets dark. It's not safe if you are going with family.

It may be possible - you have ample space to set-up tent but you will have to take permission from local authorities.
