This Banyan Tree is located about 28 km from Bangalore on the Mysore highway, but about 8 km off the highway. One can reach this picnic spot by local bus, rickshaw or taxi. Parking is available nearby around the enclosure of the tree. There are small eateries and tea shops outside the fenced garden enclosing the tree.

The 400-year-old tree covers an area of about 3 acres, almost the area of a small village. It is the largest banyan tree in Karnataka, and the 4th largest in India, and the World.

We were wonderstruck by the enormity of this single tree with so many trunks. The main trunk was destroyed due to natural disease, but now has many other trunks which have descended from its branches to support the tree. In fact, when we entered the lovely gardens surrounding the tree, we felt as if we were in a small forest. There were many monkeys scampering around, and the tree also houses many species of birds. There is a small Shiva temple on the premises.

It is a good place for a picnic in rural Bangalore, with beautiful natural surroundings, but be careful of the marauding monkeys, and please do not leave your garbage behind.

The biggest Banyan tree is located to the south of Bangalore, after taking a detour from the Bangalore-Mysore highway. Known as Dodda Aalada Mara locally, there are regular public transport buses to this place.

The banyan tree has been growing for many years and continues to expand! In fact, it has outgrown the park, which has been built around it. A popular place to have snacks or just rest and marvel at nature's wonders. A song in the popular Hindi movie, Sholay, was also shot here. Beware of the monkeys here; they are always on the lookout for foodstuff from unsuspecting visitors! Apart from that, entrance is free!

Quiet little countryside park hosting a 400 yr old relic tree, whose roots I'm told, spans over acres. Good picnic outing. Watch out for the loads of monkeys. Though not far from the city, thanks to the patchy road conditions, you actually need to rest under the cool shades of the giant to pick up energy to head back home!

This is the biggest banyan tree which is very very old and has got historical importance. For Hindus worship the banyan tree and have a belief that their wishes will get fulfilled if you offer prayer here

Apparently it is the biggest banyan tree in the world. Near Kadiri a town in Ananthapur District. It was quite a deviation to get there. But thanks to Andhras excellent roads it was an easy drive. Get to Kadiri & take a side road to the village which is about 12 km interior. Lovely road, with rain trees along it. Fields and green everywhere.

When we actually got to the tree - we didnt even realise it. Spread over 5 acres, it is wide and low. It does not have the height of the Bangalore banyan tree. Just one path leads from the gate straight to the temple in the middle. The tree, roots, branches, etc are all there, but you can only see it thru the fencing. You cant walk around it. there are no pathways for you to really experience the magnitude of the tree.

Ideally, make a bit of time - about 3 hours - and climb the hillock behind the tree so you can literally look down and see its spread.

Disappointing, but lovely drive to get there.
