    Snow snow and snow
A place surrounded by the beautiful Himalayas, a must visit in the itinerary of Kashmir. Needs a lot of development. There are no government buses or tourist packages locally available. The sledge pullers simply fleece you if you are not careful. A few hundred steps climb in the snow and sliding down is a thrilling experience but you need to bargain hard!

Amazing Kashmir. Can visit 2 times in a year. Winter and summer both. State govt need to tighten the administration
Sonmarg is an amazing place. Must go. However, I was surprised to see that there was no support and service from state government. Everything was left on to the mercy of brokers and event managers. In case of emergency, there is no support. Government can spend a bit to manage the large number of tourists. Be careful of touts who operates Sledge. They are touts. Firstly they told be Rs 200 per trip. Then, after half way, they said they had quoted 200 per point. Moreover, there was no point even. All touts. They were cheating everyone. There was no government official around. Bargain hard with snow bikers also. There is no fixed rate. But, a beautiful place to go. Must go. Overall, Kashmir is Beautiful. Don’t miss!

    My Experience
Sonamarg is a great tourist destination in Kashmir. My daughter really enjoyed the sledge ride and other activities. But irony is that there is no control over the local service providers who offer services like sledge, bike etc. Local vendors charge anything for their services, which required hard bargaining and make tourist annoyed and discomfort. I must request Govt of J&K to kindly note it and bring some regulations to control local service providers. The economy of J&K is mostly depend on tourism and if someone goes with dissatisfaction, it ll multiply to manifolds and it ll bring bad name to the state.

    Thrilling experience !!
Spent two days in Sonmarg. It was a very pricturesque journey from Srinagar. Stayed in Snowland resorts. The place was nice , the rooms were clean and the staff were polite. They packed breakfast for us at our request on Day 2 as we had an early start. On day 1 , we took a pony ride to the Thajiwas glacier and it was quite an experience. Had to do quite a bit of bargaining with them though! The ride takes half an hour to reach the glacier and it was pretty crowded as it is peak tourist time this time of the year. On day 2 , we started by 6:30 am to zero point and it was the best decision we made. We beat the morning traffic and so we enjoyed our trip to and fro . We had booked our ride with Mr Ashiq (9797726520) . He is an excellent driver cum guide and made our trip memorable. Though the road to the zero point was very steep and scary, he reassured us and showed us all the important landmarks on the way. He had a good knowledge about the place and was more than willing to share it with us . He also helped us in renting winter gear and snow bikes at zero point. He and his brother Mr Shakeel apparently do package tours of Kashmir. Pity that we were not aware of it till we reached Sonamarg and read reviews about him when I was researching about the place. Would strongly recommend him to anyone planning a trip to this place.

    Mini Switzerland
Sonamarg totally lived up to its hype as India's own Switzerland. The lush green landscape is beautifully framed with mountains and rivers leading up into the stunning Thajiwas Glacier. It is also surprisingly not as crowded as I had expected it to be, so the experience really exceeded my expectations!

    Sonamargs weird time rules
So my friends and I were on a road from leh and on our way from kargil to Srinagar we decided to do a pit stop at the supposedly beautiful Sonamarg for lunch. Now the downtown isn’t anything spectacular but more on that later. We finished a quick lunch and decided to embark on our journey onward to Srinagar. But to our dismay we were stopped by the local cops around 430 PM and weren’t allowed to leave Sonamrg. Apparently there is some rule for all tourists that post 3 PM they cannot leave Sonamrg citing safety as the reason. So any Yatris or tourists are almost compelled to stay in sonamarg without prior knowledge. After pleading to these cops who were frankly quite rude to the boys of our group, we had to spend the night in Sonamarg. Also very mediocre hotels were capatilizing on this situation and they doubled and tripled their hotel room rate. So after this not so pleasant experience Sonamarg is off my list. It’s a mediocre town and locals arnt too friendly.

Driver cum guide with Mr Ashiq n Mr.Shakeel
We visited Srinagar and Leh. Mr.Shakeel engaged us with his queen Inova car(literally treated as a queen). I must say he is the best person who can take at most care when traveling with kids. A cool guy felt like a brother, who can explain the places, people, culture the localities n an on time person. He arranged everything right from pickup, room bookings, food, places to visit, shopping local items etc..it was a soothing experience on the go.He took us to his home, met their cute little family, he gave fresh apples apricots and pear from his home garden. This is what we expected to explore the kashmiri people their villages etc.. And wherever we go he ensured about our health and kids especially. He insisted to take water to keep us hydrated and made sure we have oxygen cylinder when in high altitude regions. I strongly recommend Mr.Shakeel for anyone planning to go with kids or senior persons Contact no. 9622709560

We enjoyed visiting the place along with Ashiq bhai. Ashiq bhai is honest and humble. He explained every minute things during our Sonmarg trip. While most of the brokers in the taxi stand try to exploit tourists by charging havoc money ( apprx 6000-8000/- angainst givt rate of Rs 4000/-), Ashiq bhai took only Rs 3000/-. If somebody is planning to Sonmarg, Ashiq bhai and his brother Shakil bhai can definitely be of trustworthy partners in your tour. We have enjoyed scenic beauty, fresh snow the journey as well.

Kashmir is very difficult for tourists to enjoy without all the locals trying to rip you off. Even the tour drivers will be part of the big syndicate of frauds and bring you straight to the touts.

I only come across Mr Ashiq and Mr Shakeel on my day 5 in Kashmir. They were a total breath of fresh air. They charged 3500 for drive to zero point. Please call them at +919622709560 in advance to book. I called them only when I arrived at Sonamarg. All the nuinsance drivers kept asking for crazy prices. I googled and found ashiq number. Thanks to him. He arrived within 20min. He asked me to walk to the left side away from the main parking zone. I felt a huge relief once in his car. Finally able to enjoy the beautiful scenes without being harrassed.

The drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg is around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Though many travel operators prefer a one-night stay at Sonamarg, it is not required if you are not traveling up to Kargil. Half an hour before reaching Sonamarg, on the left side, there is Kheer Bhabani Temple, which is 5 km from the main road. The tourists are looted to the maximum here. The cab driver stops you at a place where many touts will surround you. They may ask for Rs. 11000 for showing 3–4 spots. But only the zero point at Jojila Pass is worth visiting. Others are like regular, ice-laden, beautiful mountains you see all along the way. So if you bargain, they may come down to around Rs. 6,000. But they might not show you all these places except for some fake spots. But do you know the actual government price for these places? It is Rs. 3500/-. Yes, the same rate chart is displayed at such a place (behind the taxi stand office, so that no one can see) that you will not be able to find it. I am attaching a picture of this. So imagine how much you bargain, but they are on the upper side. The drivers will not stop their cabs at this taxi stand, but somewhere else, so you can’t show them the price list. You can also complain to the local police about the high price. I came to know all these things because I had pre-booked Mr. Aashiq Bhai. He is a thorough gentleman and took Rs. 3500/- and did not ask for any baksis as every other person in Kashmir does. But you have to pre-book him well in advance because so many contributors here mentioned him, and he may be preoccupied with some other tourists. If you contact him before reaching Srinagar, he will arrange a vehicle for your entire Kashmir trip. Oh, I forgot to write that the cab that carries you from Srinagar is not allowed to take you further because at every step they plan to loot the tourists. So either you take a taxi and go towards Jojila Paas or take a pony ride. Whatever way, you will be looted.
Coming back to Ashiq Bhai, he will show you the points along the way, stop the car, and also take your photograph. At Jojila Pass, you take your own time and enjoy the snow there. On the way, he will record video for you on your mobile while driving and give information about the places on the way. There are a few restaurants in front of the taxi stand. The only pure vegetarian restaurants we find in Kashmir Dogra Restaurant is a good restaurant offering good food. It may be because the Amarnath Yatra begins from here.In this way, you reach Srinagar before sunset. The contact number of Aashiq Bhai is 9797726520.

For foreigners who wish to visit Kashmir, I'd recommend to engage Mr. Shakeel (+91 9622709560) for your tour. He speaks fluent English.

We only found out about him after we joined a local tour. We used their service for Sonamarg to Zero Point. Shakeel's brother Mr. Ashiq (+91 9797726520) drove us. He speaks simple English but sufficient to communicate and provide us the information about Zojila Pass and Zero Point.

Despite we just engaged them for a short service, Shakeel is very helpful, offered to call him anytime if we face any issue. He provided us important insights and tips to avoid us being scammed. Their charges is reasonable for private arrangement. I would encourage you to tip them if you like their service. They are hardworking, honest in earning their livings despite the challenging environment (this place may close for a few months due to heavy snowfall in winter, they probably has no income).

The place is very good for sightseeing, but all the looters are sitting there to loot you and become angry at you if you spend some more time at one place. There are no rules and regulations. The place is very good but be safe from looters.

The drive from Srinagar to Sonmarg is v scenic, beautiful vistas! Road is good except at some places, it’s under repairs or washed away. Somnath, as such is a v small town, with lots of hotels and restaurants.
