Flew to Srinagar from Bangalore and then reached Sonemarg by Road and checked into Hotel Country Inn by the Raddison. A decent hotel, with picturesque views and good hospitality. Reached Helipad by Road and after initial hiccups and confusion due to not so great arrangements reached Panchtarani by helicopter, a less than 10 minute ride. From there took a horse up to 1 km before the Holy Cave of Shri Amarnathji ( as horses are not permitted beyond the point). From there after a literal fight with the dholi bearers, managed to get a dholi to the Holy Shrine. The view of the Ice linga of Lord Shiva is to say the least, awesome and breath taking making one forget all the travails and tension one goes through while taking the ride on the horse to reach the cave. The one thing that needs to borne in mind is the vagaries of weather which can through spanner in your plans when the helicopter can be cancelled without notice due to the inclement whether in which case one may be stranded at Panchtharani and may have to stay overnight in a tent. Though the beds in the tent and free food at the langar are fine, the toilets are matter of concern as they are certainly not maintained well. Another point of concern is the exploitation by the touts at the shops who hold you to ransom considering the fact that you need to return in time to take the helicopter ride back, by quoting astronomical figures for the horse ride and the dholi. I ended up paying more than what was fixed initially by my travel agent at Srinagar, due to this as I just had no choice. The worst part, the poor horseman and the dholi bearers do not get what they deserve, which I would have most happily paid. A substantial sum is cornered by the touts who own shops on the way to the cave the ones near the river where the horses are stopped. On top of that they also force you to pay higher sums for the prasad which is worthless since if you do not buy them they will not provide safety for your luggage and mobiles which you need to surrender before heading to the cave. Barring these hiccups, the trip was exciting and the overall experience was divine. Warm clothing required based on the weather. In fact I felt stupid carrying the warm clothing as the weather was quite warm and not at all cold as it is generally made out. A cap and umbrella would always be useful as it can rain any time.…
