The Jamia Masjid mosque in Srinagar, located in the old city is one of the most important mosques in Kashmir. The architecture is simple and elegant based on a Persian design with some inspiration from Buddhist and Hindu architecture. There are many wooden pillars. It has a central courtyard with a fountain. I enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and walking around the Mosque with its spacious prayer areas.

It's a very large mosque in the old city of Srinagar it has many wooden beams which looks quite good it is also quite historical. Architecturally unique, this monument has spires instead of domes and minarets. Interestingly, each of the 350 pillars of Jama Masjid is made from a single deodar trunk.

Jamia Masjid is the biggest and important mosque in Kashmir, known as one of the sacred shrines in Srinagar. It is situated at Nowhatta, in the middle of the old city and was built in 1400 AD. This mosque was built by Sultan Sikander, later expanded by his son, Zain-ul-Abideen. The mosque got damaged and destroyed thrice by fire and rebuilt each time.

The area extends up to 384 feet by 381 feet and can accommodate more than 33,333 people offering prayer at one time. There is a perfectly square garden in the middle and the mosque is surrounded by wide lanes on all the four sides. At the peak, about 100,000 people offer prayers together.

The final restoration was done by Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. From his time down to 1914, the mosque witnessed steady deterioration. Its principal features are the 4 minars, covered by pyramidal roofs. The compound is divided by two paths, similar to the pattern of Mughal gardens.

There are 370 wooden pillars in it. Another feature of the mosque is the peace and tranquility inside it, standing out against the hustle bustle of the old bazaars around it. The attractions of this mosque include beautiful Indo-Saracenic architecture, a magnificent courtyard with fountain.

An unusual mosque. Firstly it has steeple like towers not the normal mosque dome, almost gothic church like more than mosque. Four similar sized buildings enclose a large open lawned area, monastery like, all a bit differ-ent. The buildings are supported by dozens of huge wooden pillars .
And then the silly guardian running up "no camera, no camera". I point out the people taking photographs with their mobiles phones. What? It's all photographs. "No camera, no camera" . So I continue with my mobile phone, very silly man.

The architecture of the mosque is amazing. Pillars of mosque are built of deodar trunk. Women are allowed inside (being a religious place they have to be suitably covered). There is a ticket for entry which is available at the main gate itself. Roofs are very well carved. Worth the visit. Photographs can be taken.

The Incredible Jamia Masjid is situated at Nowhatta in Srinagar city, which was built by Sultan Sikandar and extended by Zain-ul-Abidin. This Masjid includes beautiful Indo-Saracenic architecture, a magnificent courtyard and more than 300 wooden pillars. About 1 lac Muslims assemble at the mosque every Friday to offer their prayers. This Masjid is unparalleled in every aspect, which symbolizes one of the best architectural specimens which survived the ravages of time ever since it was constructed in the valley of Jammu and Kashmir

Poorly maintained. Not al at all charming as compared to pictures. Various people sitting there only to take money from you in the name of donations! Look at it from the outside. Take a few pictures and exit!

The Jama Masjid is a beautiful four towered mosque built in about 1400 around a peaceful courtyard with a fountain. We were received with great friendliness and would recommend a visit to anyone with a passing interest in Islamic architecture.
